Portrayal Specific Things
So before I get into the meat of this headcanon there are a few things to note about how I portray Link. While my Link is from Breath of the Wild there are a few things that are not necessarily in game that I apply to my link, that stem from other Zelda games.
Link has the ability to use magic. In most games Link has the ability to wield magical objects or straight up use magic. Link cam still do this, however do to the trying times that Hyrule faced over the past 100 years magic is not so evident as it once was. However given the opportunity link is fairly proficient with magic, particularly if they are instruments, or take the form of a staff ( which is his preferred method ). I will talk more about this later, probably after BOTW 2 comes out or we get more information on.
Link possesses while not having the physical Triforce of Courage seeing as Zelda has all three parts, he does possess the spirit of that Triforce piece. So Zelda wields the full Triforce to seal Calamity Ganon. However, the spirit of each piece still lies within the three reincarnated beings, Zelda, Link, and Ganon. Link possess the spirit of the Triforce of Courage, this was awakened in him before his hundred year rest when he gave everything to protect Zelda. He had long since proved his courage, but he had not proven to himself, or anyone who was chosen to rule a Divine Beast, or even Zelda that he was in fact courageous. He was a bit cocky with his sword skills, but talented, and still head strong about his abilities. He was still trying to figure his own life out. Thus the last stand where he essentially gave his life for Zelda awakened the spirit of the Triforce of Courage within him which aided him in his ability to return ( because I refuse to believe that there were not other powers at play for that journey okay its a long freaking journey ).
Link prefers a bow and arrows to a sword ( this comes from artwork of him for the game and his BOTW amiibo where he is pictured with a bow and arrow in action over a sword, its also my preference of a weapon ). This will get its own huge headcanon because I need to discuss Link’s power in general and skill when it comes to combat. But Link prefers the bow to the sword. He always has and he always will. It could be seen as a sign of weakness because archers are stationed farther back, Link often feels that way. But its also a sign of caution, and often archers are the first line of defense in a great battle. Link’s skill with a bow and arrow like with a sword are unmatched. He prides himself on his skill with a bow, and if he’s going to get cocky, its going to be in a contest about his archery skills, not about his sword skills ( look at all the archery mini games ). This also stems from the fact that often times to defeat Ganon in many games including BOTW a bow is needed, not just a sword which is typically used to seal Ganon away. Link’s archery skills are crucial to him not only be a well rounded knight and guard for Zelda, but they are crucial to him. He enjoys archery, and the competition of it, that comes easier than the competition of close combat. Link’s free time can often be spent with him doing archery, where his training is often sword focused. Its complicated as to why he really prefers the bow to the sword, but he does.
Link is physically very powerful which is why he can go up against the likes of Ganon whether Ganon has his Triforce piece or not. I see this discussed in many theory videos. Link’s ability to parry attacks from Guardians, and Lionels is unmatched and potentially inhuman ( which fine Link technically isn’t a human ). His sheer amount of raw power he has behind his blows and his skills show us a very dangerous side of Link. Luckily he isn’t so easily manipulated himself. He has a strong mind. This goes back to the Triforce thing in order to wield a piece of it, regardless if you make it imbalanced or not, you have to have elements of the other two pieces. Anyways, Link’s raw power is very much on par with that of Ganon. That however does not mean he should ever wield that part of the triforce. It takes alot to hold back that power. Link uses it only when he needs to and never any more or any less.
Link never returned the feelings of love to Mipha. Link and Mipha are complicated. But I will state that Link never returned the romantic feelings Mipha clearly had for him. He saw her more like a sister than anything. He had love for her, but not the romantic kind. He cared deeply for her, but not in the way she probably wished he did. This isn’t because he loved Zelda ( which he likely did, though at that time its a bit more wishy washy on what his feelings were ) it was more that he just did not feel the same way. He also had a duty to Zelda and the kingdom. I often see that if he did not have the duty he would be with her, and I disagree. They had known each other as kids, she was often healing him, for him it was always a bond of friendship.
Link before and after taking his personal oath of silence still never talked much. Link is known to be a bit sassy. But whether he has taken his oath of silence or not, Link still was not the most talkative. When he was, it was sass usually. He was never one to egg on partners, but he definitely was a bit cocky when it came to beating them. He was no stranger to injury either, he got hurt. He always gets hurt it seems. But back to the point. During his time as Zelda’s guard, and then during the game Link is mostly quiet asking short questions or not talking at all ( as in the memories ). Even after the game when he no longer has this vow, he still doesn’t talk much. But he does, and if he is not being a bit of a smart ass, and he cares for you, or knows you well you will get to see a side of him not many do get to see, and its a treasure all on its own.
Link’s preferred method of travel is horseback. He prefers horseback to walking. Blame it on always having to walk everywhere, or behind Zelda often. Link just prefers riding. He loves his horse, and dotes on her. He and Epona share a very special bond. Speaking of, Link does in fact have Epona. Link loves to ride, for him it is very freeing. Its also fun, and gives him a chance to be a bit cocky which lets be real he’s going to take that chance.
Link can play a few instruments. While not touched on in BOTW except for some concept art, any many of the games Link has the ability to learn how to play instruments quickly and with proficiency. Often, and most famously this is the Ocarina. He is proficient in the harp as well. But I would argue that his favorite instrument is actually a flute which is in the same family as an Ocarina but has a softer and more melodic tone than the Ocarina. Link is also very good at whistling, which while not an instrument is still technically musical.
