Holmes probably saw Watson’s ‘his limits’ list, probably saw how shy, withdrawn, listless and unwell Watson was and thought ‘this man is clearly curious and likely interested in deduction. He also needs help gaining strength and confidence. Maybe taking him on a case will cheer him up, bring him out of his shell a bit’. Holmes helps people in a very practical way; he solves problems for them. He applied a similar idea to Watson, and it worked. We often talk about how Watson saves Holmes but Holmes saved Watson too <3
