Please write 3 paragraphs describing and explaining your character’s past, and how they came to Serenity House (this applies for OC staff & patients):

The last place Alli ever thought she would end up is in a place like Serenity. Her life was always pretty easy and fairly normal. She went to school, played soccer as a kid, and stayed pretty healthy. She’d never broken a bone, or been anywhere close to being admitted to the hospital. The thought of being locked in a place for sick kids seemed so far fetched in her mind. She could never imagine herself in one. The summer after she turned 15, though, everything seemed to change for her.

It started with a few headaches here and there. Maybe one once - twice a week sometimes. They weren’t too bad and they didn’t really concern her too much, but as time went on they got more frequent and more severe. They made it hard to focus. Her vision blurred, and weakness took over her body making it difficult to even move. It was then her parents called 911 and she was rushed to the hospital for, what looked like, a stroke. Scans and tests were performed and although Alli had not suffered from a stroke, the doctors were unsure what was wrong. The next step was a spinal tap. The test was strenuous on the teen’s weak body but it came back that she had Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. She was given medication and, after being monitored overnight, Alli was sent home with detailed instructions about what to do for the next few weeks and assurance that it shouldn’t ever happen again.

It did happen again, though. It kept happening. Alli kept going through these spells of stroke-like symptoms and then coming back with completely clean scans. After about six months of this cycle every few weeks, they had a different diagnosis to add to the table: Hemiplegic Migraines. She was truly one in a million. IIH was rare. Having recurrent IIH? A medical anomaly. Hemiplegic Migraines - also rare. Having both extremly rare diseases? That was almost unheard of. Needless to say there wasn’t a cure for either. There were treatments that might help but nothing to end the painful cycle. Her parents finally decided that keeping up with her medical care - taking her for spinal taps every other week, MRIs, CTs - it was too much. That’s when they found Serenity House and hoped it would be the best place for their daughter.

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?

“I have IIH and migraines,” she said simply letting a small sigh escape from her mouth. “I don’t know if my parents thought that was too much to handle or what but they sent me here.” The uncertainty of the whole situation was something that made Alli very cautious. Stress seemed to trigger her migraines to some degree and this whole experience was one of the most stressful things she’d experienced.

How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?

The teen shrugged, “I’m - nervous - but maybe it’s a good thing. I’ve heard there’s good doctors here and they can give me some support or different treatments.” She looked down at her hands, studying them as she thought to herself, “I’m in no way excited to be here. It just doesn’t feel like the place for me, but I guess - I guess it is.”

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

“I think I’m mostly afraid I’ll get worse and I won’t have my parents to be here with me. My - uh - my mom was always a big help when I had a migraine and couldn’t walk by myself or after a spinal tap. She would always help me with whatever it was I needed. I guess I’m scared I won’t get that same level of support here. I don’t know how well I’ll do on my own.”

How do you feel about the patients on other wards? (Medical or Rescued Wards)

“I don’t think I really have an opinion yet. I’m a firm believer in don’t judge a book by its cover,” she tilted her head slightly. “I mean - I guess if I don’t like somebody I’ll keep my distance and hopefully they do the same for me. I’ve never really been a confrontational person and that’s worked well for me before.”
