My not obsession...
I have been obsessed with knowledge about the Holocaust and specifically the story of Anne Frank. I started learning about it in the eighth grade. So, if you don't know the basic facts about the Holocaust, here is some of the basic facts: The Holocaust took place from January 30, 1933 to May 8, 1945. Around 6 million Jews and 17 million individuals died overall. This was a genocide during World War II in which Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany, aided by its collaborators, systematically murdered six million Jews. When I began researching the Holocaust I became more interested in individual and personal stories. The most intriguing story to me is the story of Anne Frank and her family. I will give some background and then summarize her story and I will insert links at the end. Annelies Marie “Anne” Frank was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany to parents Edith and Otto Frank. Annes childhood was relatively normal but that all changed when Hitler took power. On July 5, 1942 Anne’s older sister Margot received a work order and so they went into hiding the next day. They went into hiding in a “secret annex” of her fathers work that was hidden by a bookcase. There were only a few trusted employees who new about their whereabouts. On 13 July 1942, the Franks were joined by the van Pels family: Hermann, Auguste, and 16-year-old Peter, and then in November by Fritz Pfeffer, a dentist and friend of the family. At first, Anne did not like Peter but eventually they sparked a romance. Starting shortly before confinement Anne began to record her life and personal feelings in a diary she received for her 13th birthday. Anne often talked about the rocky relationship she had with her mother and how much she loved her father. The lived in relative peace for a little over two years. On August 4 1944 they were arrested and after proceedings they ended up at Westerbork Transit Camp. Before leaving the annex Anne gave her diary to one of the people that was helping them hide, her name was Miep Gies for safe keeping. On 3 September 1944, the group was deported on what would be the last transport from Westerbork to the Auschwitz concentration camp, the journey took 3 days. In October 1944, the Frank women were scheduled to join a transport to the Liebau labour camp but Anne could not go because she had scabies. On 28 October, selections began for women to be relocated to Bergen-Belsen. More than 8,000 women, including Anne and Margot Frank, and Auguste van Pels, were transported. Edith Frank (Annes Mother) was left behind and died from starvation. Margot fell from her bunk in her weakened state and was killed by the shock. Anne died a few days after Margot. The exact dates of Margot and Anne's deaths were not recorded. After liberation, the camp was burned in an effort to prevent further spread of disease; the sisters were buried in a mass grave at an unknown location. After the war the only person to survive from the Frank family was Otto Frank and he went on to publish Anne’s diary. The story of Anne and her family is haunting and fascinating. Today there is a website specifically dedicated to everything Anne Frank in which you will find most of the information I've included. You can also learn more about the Holocaust here. Another horrifying and intriguing aspect of the events of the Holocaust besides the surface knowledge of systematic genocide are the experiments and unethical medical practices of Dr. Josef Megele. He did a lot of twin experiments. I cant even begin to explain the horrendous acts that Dr. Mengele carried out but many survivors were permanently damaged from their experiences. I am planning to write a research paper about Dr. Mengele so I will have more knowledge on the subject after I have done some research.
