I have never seen any author complain about this but i would totally understand if someone would be annoyed that their readers are seeing romance when they intentionally didn't include that.
#i was thinking back to a comment i received and they wrote ''L/Ethe'' which made me realise that some people will inevitably#interpret the story as romantic at some point or with a romantic resolution which spoiler alert (not really) i'm not going to write#that fic is not about romantic love. and after all Ethe will do to L - he would rather be burned alive than being near her#cuz that would be less painful. it's not even going to be ''oh wow yes toxic ship!!'' cuz i am trying to write a realistic story here#and people irl don't want to stay together with someone who treated them like shit for years and ruined their trust in people yk#so yeah. i'm not personally annoyed but if you read it like that. i think you'll miss a lot of the themes i am discussing#i even made Ethe say that L thinks it's just a childish rivalry but it's much more than that so yeah... lmao#in general though. while shipping is totally fine. i think people that look at any story that doesn't have romance as the main focus#like that are not going to get all aspects#this is me being annoying but i think this heavily applies to death note as well cuz you are going to interpret any action as#obsessive toxic love & that takes a lot from the story itself#that's why i also tend to talk more about ''dynamics'' than ''ships'' even when the romantic love is there.#d.exe
