What a time to be alive
This post is designed as an interactive piece with background readings and videos; bookmark and return to them at some point if you don't dive in on first read!
At the end of the day, we’re nothing more than slightly evolved apes on this rock called Earth. We live and govern ourselves through a set of patterns and behaviors that, in their sum, we refer to as society. Religion, economics, politics, entertainment, culture—all of these are simply a set of commonly agreed-upon myths and stories that perpetuate upon each other to build an edifice of shared understanding for this global society. For a group of monkeys, we’ve done pretty well for ourselves… but every now and then there comes a time to reshape the stories and myths we tell each other.
Like practically everyone else on the globe, this current epoch of social distancing has been a period where time is of abundance for me. The last few weeks have led me to dive into the basics of economics, public policy, and more. I won’t claim to be an expert, but I can say that my exploration has led to perhaps a clearer understanding of the broader challenges that confront us. Here’s a set of assorted reading/viewing that I’ve absorbed the last few days. Overall, it’s helped me better visualize some of the threads of our unspoken myths, some of the pieces of the puzzle that is our set of societal systems, and how it might be time to evolve yet again.
PART 1: NARRATIVE COLLAPSE
First: we’re in a mass narrative collapse.
This blog post by Venkatesh Rao expounds a bit more on the idea.
For the fourth time in my adult memory, humanity has collectively, visibly lost the plot at a global level. My criteria are fairly restrictive: The dotcom bust and the 2007 crash don’t make my list for instance, and neither do previous recent epidemics like SARS or Ebola. Global narrative collapse is a fairly severe condition, but apparently no longer as rare as it once was. Here’s my shortlist: Fall of Berlin Wall (1989, I was 14) 9/11 (2001, I was 27) Trump election (2016, I was 42) Coronavirus (2020, I am 45) It always seems to happen relatively suddenly (but is not always entirely black-swan-level unanticipated; it is typically a gray swan), and in each of the first three cases, by my estimate, it took humanity 1-2 years to reorient.
The TL;DR of it is that a huge element of our shared global experience the past few weeks has been a sort of collective daze—an inability by individuals (and societies at large) to effectively frame this situation in clean terms that fit existing narratives (us vs. them, good vs. bad, in-group vs. out-group).
In recent days, as the pandemic situation has dragged on, we’ve seen an increasing popularity of fringe narratives and conspiracy theories (China intentionally started the virus; Russia did it; etc.) for this reason exactly. Humans need these kinds of clear narratives, true or not, to help us define our place in an uncertain universe.
Why are we in this kind of narrative collapse?
Since the Enlightenment era and the Industrial Revolution, Western (and by extension, global) society has revolved around a core idea: the power of rationality and science as a new God.
A Steve Jobs quote I saw recently sums up this idea:
He was struck by an insight that would prove central to his own reinvention, a subtle but significant shift from the spiritual to the practical: “It was one of the first times I started thinking that maybe Thomas Edison did a lot more to improve the world than Karl Marx and Neem Karoli Baba put together.”
Remember this quote: let’s call it Myth 1. This core belief, Myth 1, has been radically transformative to our planet by any measure. Technological and economic innovation since the Industrial Revolution have unleashed massive financial and scientific change.
Tumblr media
"Almost all the gains in human well-being in history happened since the Industrial Revolution" (Vox)
But, this also means we’re now more connected and vulnerable than ever.
Globalization has led to massive unanticipated second-order systems effects that we’ve never had to confront at this scale.
With unprecedented levels of travel, interwoven supply chains, and immediate information sharing, we have an increased global vulnerability to pandemics that can move at breakneck speed. Something like this coronavirus situation simply wouldn’t have occurred 100 years ago.
The widespread effects of industrialization have increased the likelihood of tail events like climate shocks and mass displacement.
We’re now confronting these problems as an interconnected planet, and I would posit that the narrative collapse we’re in is because we’ve never had to deal with these kind of systems-level challenges before at a global scale.
Call it Frankenstein 2.0: The Global Edition—we’re confronting the machine we’ve built as a global society, and realizing how incredibly difficult is to untangle the complexity of systems-level issues. We may finally be at a global tipping point where we’re recognizing the logical extremes of Myth 1 and the Industrial Revolution-era ideals of unfettered progress.
A Bong-Joon Ho aside
These unanticipated global systems effects are compounding an existing set of issues with our economic and financial systems that were already coming to a head… thanks to increasing inequality, mass consumption culture, automation, and more.
I found Bong-Joon Ho’s films to be pretty salient viewing in this regard. His trifecta of Okja, Snowpiercer, and (the Oscar-winning) Parasite are brilliant films in their own right. But together, they almost form a perfect trilogy, and represent necessary viewing for this era to underscore some core themes of the world we live in.
Parasite spotlights class inequality in the 21st century, and how climate change and coming shocks will disproportionally impact lower classes. Okja highlights mass production/consumption culture and its ethics, how our individual decisions shape society as a whole, and how redemption and change may only come from conscious choice. Snowpiercer, with its allegorical view of capitalism and class inequality, showcases how the system perpetuates itself and the difficult choices we must make if we want change.
youtube
Spoiler alert!
In sum, it’s tough to watch these films and not come away with a jarring recognition that the world we’ve built has some gaping problems. (A walk around the block these days will reveal the same.)
PART 2: ECONOMIC LEVERS
Government responses
We’ve now found ourselves in a situation where public health priorities necessitate the shutdown of our global economy. Governments are trying to figure out how to respond using the 20th century economic tools at their disposal.
The tools deployed by the US government and others in March were predictable:
Monetary policy levers in the form of Fed interest cuts to 0% and massive Fed borrowing
Fiscal policy levers in the form of direct stimulus to businesses and individuals
Here are some Econ 101-style videos about monetary and fiscal policy as a basic refresher.
youtube
youtube
youtube
Next up (once Congress is back from their recess [!]) is a rumored massive fiscal stimulus package in the form of infrastructure spending, designed to immediately get individuals employed and kickstart the saving/spending cycle.
These tools are typically applied within the context of our regular debt and business cycle to smooth out the impact of short-term fluctuations and overheating in the market.
youtube
The problem?
1) These tools are not nearly enough to resuscitate an economy shut down to this scale, with >20 million people in the US alone unemployed.
2) Printing trillions of dollars of capital will also lead to predictable outcomes like hyperinflation, unless carefully balanced with countermeasures.
Simply trying to apply our current tools to the problem is like putting a band-aid on a broken leg.
At this stage, given the sheer scale of economic and social impact, governments will likely need to drastically rethink their roles in society.
In times of global unrest, what does a nation owe its citizens? Healthcare, food, shelter, and other basic needs? We’re confronting, in real-time, these broader questions of the role of the state in a world where citizens are increasingly vulnerable to situations out of their control.
This Economist article highlights the mutable nature of nation-states… and how wartime changes their role and scope in ways that are often permanent.
This is before we even start talking about developing countries and their economies: they have an extremely limited set of tools at their disposal and the situation looks bleak (see Iraq and Italy for just a couple of examples). Global events do not affect everyone equally.
We were already on a collision path to confronting these questions. Again, for a number of reasons, the status quo economic systems were going to fail us sooner or later: 1) Globalization has led to second-order systems effects (pandemics, climate change shocks, and more) that demand better methods for global coordination and cooperation. 2) Automation and technological progress have been accelerating, and it’s clear that this would eventually lead to unemployment and economic displacement. 3) Growing global economic inequality would eventually lead to global social unrest.
The crazy thing? We are likely entering an era of abundance. Thanks to unprecedented productivity growth, indicators of wealth, health, energy production, and food production are at all-time highs… we simply don’t yet have the tools and systems to ensure that the needs of humanity are equitably met.
Bottom-line: we’re entering this period of abundance, fueled by our technological improvements, using scarcity-era systems. The cohesive vision of the world we had post-WW2, with the ideal of the American Dream spread worldwide, is on the brink of collapse.
PART 3: CHANGE
The EconoMonster
It’s not all doom and gloom. Pay attention to discourse about the economy these days; it’s quite curious. The economy is often treated like a 3rd-party actor exerting its will on the world—let’s call this Myth 2.
The entire world holds its breath at the same time, in collective consternation about the mythical Economic Beast. Global political leaders, financial mavens, and everymen alike are all scratching their heads thinking... "I wonder what's going to happen to the Economy. Do you think the Economy will recover? How will we survive this?"
The entire world is facing the same problem at the same time, related to human-built systems that are entirely in our control, and we are collectively scratching our heads trying to figure out how to survive what we are framing as a purely exogenous shock. The lack of agency being exerted in unison is shocking to me, and signals how far down the rabbit hole we've come in being driven by systemic forces that we feel are out of our control.
Here’s the thing! Our set of economic principles is no more set in stone than our pre-16th-century principle of geocentricity. The economy is merely a tool defined by us; simply an arbitrary set of made-up rules that we can shape to our needs to coordinate a complex set of actions and incentives. Money, wealth, and debt are all human-made concepts conjured out of thin air to meet our goals.
This Dalio interview is worth a watch (ignore the interviewers’ questions, which miss the point entirely).
youtube
The takeaway: we’re soon to be in the midst of a once-in-75-year major shift in how we think about the economy. (The likes of which we haven’t seen since post-WW2 when we adopted our current monetary policy system and adopted GDP as our core metric)
We have the ability (and need) to shape our economic and political systems to adapt to the new reality we’re confronted with. The sooner we all are able to collectively recognize this truth, the better.
That said, what is most likely going to happen once the public health issues have been sorted out? Most actors in the economy will push to restore business as usual and convince us that this was a collective dream. Businesses and the government will tout a massive economic “recovery”, increase ad and marketing spend, and try to work around the margins to restore the status quo.
This would be the worst-case scenario of ignoring this wake-up call. It would be a colossal waste to look at this once-in-a-generation opportunity to revisit our systems, and instead try to push for a return to the status quo: a consumption-driven society, growing inequality, no cohesive vision, massive ecological impacts, and more.
What does the solution look like instead? That’s a complex maze.
Pull at any one thread: globalization, mass consumption, funding welfare and social services… and you’re in a morass that includes fiscal and monetary policy, supply-side economics, deficit spending, and more. Again, this is part of the narrative collapse: there are no simple answers in a complex, system-driven society.
This 3-part set of essays from Andrew Kortina (Venmo co-founder) may untangle the knots a bit, and is well-worth the read.
I Backpack
The Infinite Frontier as American Capitalism's Response to the Malthusian Trap
Advertising, IP Law, and theInvisible Hand
A salient quote:
It is unsurprising we have a crisis of meaning, when you recognize this feedback loop implied by demand generation: → We want more productivity, so we can produce surplus reserves to endure hard seasons. → We use wages to encourage participation in labor. → We use profit to incentivize productivity increasing (labor saving) innovation. → We innovate and reduce the need for labor. → There’s not enough work to do, and workers don’t get wages (because profits go to capital). → We incentivize over-consumption to create demand for labor by teaching people that consumption is their primary means of self expression. → We continue to invent labor saving technologies, and an increasing portion of labor serves demand that is artificially generated through ads. → An increasing portion of people recognize their work is not essential, but the result of artificial demand generation. With respect to meaning and dignity, we’re not in a great place. But, with respect to generating / extracting profits, we’re pretty efficient.
An exploration of potential solutions is out of scope for this (already unwieldy) post, but a topic for future discussions.
We don’t have simple answers so this will no doubt be an involved exercise (to say the least), but it’s important that we don’t let sorting out the details keep us stuck in the status quo. Moving forward will need a hefty dose of creativity and a lot of application of systems thinking best practices... but the solution is entirely in our hands.
In Conclusion
We’re in a mass narrative collapse. That’s because we’re at the end of one driving Myth in global society (science and rationality as core forces above all). We’re in the midst of global systems challenges to be expected in any major epochal shift. To resolve this, we need to recognize another core Myth: that the economy and our invisible systems are separate from us somehow. It’s time to dig deep into the assumptions and constraints that built the system we have today, and reshape it to meet our needs.
We were already on a collision path with these issues… this pandemic is merely the accelerant. Never let a crisis go to waste.

The Outer Worlds' Best Feature Might Be The Friends You Make Along The Way
Tumblr media
There’s a lot to like about Obsidian Entertainment’s next RPG, The Outer Worlds. It’s pretty much a conglomeration of all the best things about the developer’s past games, like Alpha Protocol and Fallout: New Vegas, with a big emphasis on an expansive conversation system and plenty of consequences for your actions. It utilizes its turn-of-the-century aesthetic perfectly to create the game’s expansive, funny send-up of capitalism and corporate culture. And it provides you with a band of companion characters who react to the story and situations as they unfold, and who make the game a lot more interesting with their presence.
Obsidian recently gave GameSpot a chance to get hands-on with The Outer Worlds, providing roughly two hours to dig into one of the game’s locations, a lawless and hostile world called Monarch. As Obsidian has detailed in the past, you play a character of your own creation, with the game reacting heavily to your choices as you decide whether to be good, evil, or something in between. Instead of venturing straight out in a random direction to tangle with various creatures, I spun around to speak with the other two major characters of the demo: your companions, Nyoka and Parvati.
“They have opinions of their own and they’re reacting to the choices you’ve made.”
Companion characters are a big part of The Outer Worlds, as they have been in other, similar Obsidian RPGs, like New Vegas. You can have two in tow at any given time once they’ve joined up with you, and of course, they help in combat with whatever weapons you decide to equip them with. They’re also a major component of your story in The Outer Worlds.
“We wanted to integrate companions quite a bit more, so each of the companions has a backstory and a companion quest,” lead designer Chris Staples said during an interview at the press event. “Talking to them along the way opens up those companion quests and you can do things for them. But also, how those companion quests play out influences what they think of you. Your decisions and how you treat various factions also plays into that.”
“For example, a companion might not like the Board [the corporate overlords of The Outer Worlds] at all, and if you start helping them, they’ll have issues with that,” he continued. “They’ll bring that up and say, ‘Hey, I don’t like what you’re doing, if you keep doing this, we can’t work together.’ We wanted to make sure that there was a lot of–I mean part of the space fantasy is, you know, building your crew and flying through space and having adventures with your crew. And that is sort of what we’re going for, to try to make sure they are involved along the way. They have opinions of their own and they’re reacting to the choices you’ve made.”

Helping Out
With no quests on the docket, we were free to wander into a nearby outpost and talk to its denizens or go tromping across Monarch’s monster-filled fields to see what we might find. As it turned out, though, our demo had a companion quest ready to go from Nyoka, a character who has been living on Monarch, working as a hunter and general monster killer. Talking to her triggered a conversation that gave the backstory for her companion quest. She told a story about her former crew, several of whom had been killed during a monster attack and hastily buried or, worse, left behind. Nyoka asked for help in retrieving some mementos from the burial sites in order to properly honor the team–and take some sweet revenge on the giant alien mantiqueen that murdered them. If you accept, things get altogether more complicated than that.
The first part of the mission sends you running across the fields of Monarch in search of the gravesite of one of Nyoka’s friends. Getting there isn’t exactly easy since the area is populated by groups of bandits (who also have alien attack dogs) and families of vicious aliens that can spray you down with swarms of bugs they exude from their abdomens.
Luckily, you’re pretty proficient in combat, too. Your backstory is that you were frozen in cryostasis for decades while Monarch and its counterpart planet, Halcyon, were colonized. Now that you’ve awoken, your experience has given you the strange capacity to slow down time, allowing you to line up shots or melee strikes on specific parts of enemies’ bodies. The Outer Worlds packs a variety of weapons, from blades that poison to sniper rifles and giant mini-guns, and in our demo, we had a variety of different tools for blasting away at enemies.
Combat felt strong during our demo, especially compared to New Vegas, which The Outer Worlds draws inspiration from. But it’s your companions who give the whole experience a fast-paced, strategic feel. Each companion has a special ability move, Staples said, which comes with a cooldown timer. You can activate it on the fly with one button, ordering your teammate to use it on whoever you’re targeting. Doing so triggers a brief cutscene as the character executes their move–Nyoka unloads a torrent of armor-shredding ammo from a mini-gun, while Parvati winds up for a big, stunning strike with an electricity infused melee weapon. Both moves were essential to victory in battles, as teammates could stun some enemies briefly while weakening others.
You also have a few squad commands. Similar to what you might expect from a Mass Effect game, you can order your teammates to specific locations or to focus fire on a particular enemy. Mostly, though, you’ll let your teammates handle their own fights, but you can dictate their behaviors from The Outer Worlds character menus. The game provides all sorts of options, allowing you to set how aggressive a character is, from what ranges they’ll attack, and a lot more. You can even set one of your companions to function as the squad leader, shouldering the burden of commanding the team. They’ll still follow you around, but if you’re a person who’s not great in combat situations, letting another character lead can make things a bit easier.

Bantering It Up
Nyoka’s mission involved picking up a decaying necklace from the grave of one of her friends and then looking to enlist some help to find the cave where the rest were killed. That meant finding two members of the team who’d left Monarch, which required the help of a local hermit with access to some communications gear. We found him on top of a nearby mountain, which was surrounded by mercenaries who’d basically taken the place over.
Nearby, we found a team of mercenaries who had been contracted by the facility’s owner to protect the place. Their contract stipulated that they had to stop attackers coming from a nearby cave–since it didn’t mention anyone marching up the mountain pass the way my squad did, the mercenaries ignored the attackers. In order to talk them into doing their jobs (and therefore putting them into the line of fire, instead of us), we had to venture into the cave and help their missing commanding officer
Working our way across Monarch gave Nyoka and Parvati a few chances to swap stories. Mostly, those became opportunities for more of The Outer Worlds’ humor to creep in. Despite comments from Obsidian about how the game doesn’t take a political stance, it’s clearly a pretty hilarious send-up of capitalism. At one point, Nyoka mentioned that her life on Monarch wasn’t so bad because she at least got weekends–a concept completely foreign to Parvati, a resident of the completely corporate Halcyon.
Which companion you bring with you will matter beyond the banter you’re likely to hear on missions. Staples said that having the right character with you can change how a mission plays out.
Tumblr media
“Sometimes you’ll talk to a quest-giver and they’ll mention it, or like Nyoka has a history with some of the other characters on Monarch,” he explained. “So she can chime in and say certain things that might open up either different paths of a quest, where if you didn’t have her, that option wouldn’t be available.”
Each character has one main companion quest, Staples said, plus the ability to interject and influence a lot of other quests, as well. It’ll be up to you to pay attention to the characters, talk to them, and learn about them, to find out where, when, and with whom they’re most likely to have an impact.
I wasn’t able to finish the mission in the demo–although I did talk a local corporate mercenary gang into fighting the bandits for me–The Outer Worlds did give a taste of how a lot of its systems will work, most notably its companion characters. Staples said a big priority for Obsidian is making the game feel highly reactive to you and your choices, and that means presenting different options based on your chosen character traits and the personality you flesh out through conversations. And that goes for which characters you have with you, too.
From our short time getting hands-on with The Outer Worlds, spending some time with your companions seemed to be the best part. Combat works well, but it’s better with your AI buddies. The same goes for exploring the world and trying to talk your way out of all the trouble you’re liable to get up to on various planets. While Obsidian’s dumb, hyper-capitalist sci-fi world is fun on its own, it’s the characters you hang around with that really make it feel real. And it seems like spending time to get to know your companions will pay off, not just in what it adds to the story, but in the gameplay capabilities and options they offer to help you accomplish your goals in The Outer Worlds–whatever they might be.

Tech trends 2019: 'The end of truth as we know it?'
Tumblr media Tumblr media

More than 200 firms contributed to our request for ideas on what the global tech trends will be in 2019. Here’s a synthesis of the main themes occupying the minds of the technorati this year. You may be surprised.
This year it’s all about data – a small, rather dull word for something that is profoundly changing the world we live in.
New technologies, from voice-controlled speakers to “internet of things” (IoT) sensors, connected cars to fitness wearables, are vastly increasing the amount of digital data we produce.
And artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and cloud computing are transforming the way we store, analyse and apply it.
“In 2019 smart sensors will start to be found everywhere, automating data collection to satisfy the voracious appetite of AI,” says Tim Harper, a former European Space Centre engineer and now founder of G2O Water Technologies.
AI could be a powerful force for good, improving healthcare and combating climate change, for example. But it also presents many dangers – to democracy, to financial markets, to the belief in objective truth.

Image caption Our world is digital now, but has that made it better or worse?
Data in the wrong hands, used in the wrong way, could even threaten world peace, some commentators warn.
Fake news?
“Deepfakes” – manipulated digital videos that overlay another person’s face onto a body or change what people actually said – pose a growing threat, argues Katja Bego, data scientist at innovation foundation, Nesta.
‘Fake porn’ has serious consequences
“2019 will be the year that a malicious ‘deepfake’ video sparks a geopolitical incident,” she predicts.
Tumblr media

Media captionThe face-mapping technology raising fears about fake news
“Though deepfakes are still a relatively new technology, they are evolving incredibly fast, making it harder and harder for the naked eye – or even digital forensics tools – to identify them. At the same time, they are also becoming ever easier and cheaper to create.”
She envisages a nightmare scenario in which a world leader could appear to declare war or spread damaging propaganda, with potentially devastating results.
As fake news stories – often state-sponsored – continue to flood social media and China’s Xinhua News Agency launches its first AI-created newsreaders, the lines between the fake and the real are becoming increasingly blurred.
If we cannot trust what we see or hear any more, is this “the end of truth as we know it?” asks Ms Bego.
Tumblr media

Media captionChina’s ‘first AI news anchor’
Andrew Tsonchev, director of technology at cyber security company Darktrace Industrial, believes the internet’s openness and lack of accountability – qualities its founders cherished – play into the hands of those with malicious intent.
“Ultimately, manipulating the public discourse might prove to be a greater cyber-risk than the hacking of our devices,” he says.
“Controlling data may soon become more important than stealing it.”
Under attack
Cybersecurity companies are notorious for scaring us witless in the drive to sell more of their products. But that doesn’t mean their warnings are worthless.
And AI in the hands of criminal or state-sponsored hackers is certainly worth worrying about.
“2019 will see the first AI-orchestrated attack take down a FTSE 100 company,” predicts Jason Hart, chief technology officer, data protection, at security firm Gemalto.
Image copyright Getty Images
Image caption Could an AI-powered cyber-attack knock out a city’s entire electricity supply?
“A new breed of AI-powered malware will infect an organisation’s systems, sit undetected gathering information, adapt to its surroundings, and unleash a series of bespoke attacks targeted to take down a company from the inside out.”
AI will be needed to fight AI, many believe, particularly as the IoT vastly increases the number of potential weak points in this burgeoning network of connected devices.
Greg Day from Palo Alto Networks says: “AI on AI cyber-battles will begin. Cybersecurity will be a machine versus machine fight with humans alongside to help and adjudicate.
“While cybersecurity will look for new ways to spot adversaries and threats with AI, adversaries will use AI themselves and increasingly look to subvert machine learning and AI.”
This will ramp up the stakes even further.
“We’ll see the first example of a scaled-up mass IoT attack affecting critical infrastructure,” predicts Darren Thomson, chief technology officer at cybersecurity firm Symantec.
Healthier lives
But it’s not all bad news. AI unleashed on all our health data could herald a new era of personalised medicine, many believe.
“We predict that by mid-2020, two in three patients with any condition will be supported by AI and AI-related technologies, either as part of diagnostics, treatment, or administration,” says John Gikopoulos, global head of AI and automation at Infosys Consulting.
AI-powered computers are getting better at analysing images and diagnosing cancers, and helping to identify molecules that could be turned into life-saving drugs.
Image copyright Getty Images
Image caption Wearable devices are giving us increasingly sophisticated data about our health and wellbeing
Virtual doctors and chatbots are giving us health advice via apps.
“In 2019, for the first time ever, there will be more health data available outside health systems than inside them,” says Othman Laraki, chief executive of Color, a San Francisco-based genetic testing company.
“Your Apple Watch can deduce your heart health, your mood, your sleep patterns. Your genome can tell you your risk for inherited cancer and heart disease and traits that impact everything from your caffeine sensitivity to your ability to metabolise medicine.”
Data-driven healthcare, with an emphasis on prevention rather than cure, will have a “tremendous societal impact”, he believes.
Taking back control?
In the wake of last year’s Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal, which resulted in a maximum £500,000 fine for Facebook imposed by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office, how big companies use and abuse our data has been under much greater scrutiny.
As firms scramble to get their data privacy policies up to scratch now that the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation is in force, “2019 will be the year of GDPR fines”, says Harrison Van Riper, a senior analyst at cybersecurity firm Digital Shadows.
Some commentators are predicting a consumer fightback.
Image copyright EPA
Image caption Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg came under fire for the cavalier way his firm treated customer data
“In 2019, I expect that consumers will start to reclaim control of their data and monetise it,” says Phil Beckett, managing director of disputes and investigations at management consultancy Alvarez and Marsal.
Systems are being developed to allow us to control our health, financial, social, and entertainment data effectively, argues Paul Winstanley, chief executive of Censis, a centre of excellence for sensing and imaging systems.
“It is then an individual’s choice whether they want to share that data with a third party, or not.”
As consumer trust has been “severely dented”, argues Mark Curtis, co-founder at design consultancy Fjord, firms will increasingly adopt a “data minimalism” approach, only asking for data they really need.
More Technology of Business
“They will have to clearly show the payback for users sharing their data, drawing a straight line from the act of sharing to receiving relevant products and services in return,” he says.
All this consumer data, analysed by AI, will at least enable firms to personalise their services, argues Nigel Vaz, international chief executive of digital transformation agency Publicis.Sapient.
But rebuilding trust will be key, and this means consumers understanding how and why their data is being used, believes Ojas Rege, chief strategy officer at MobileIron, a mobile security company.
“Without transparency, there is no trust. Without trust, there is no data. Without data, there is no AI,” he concludes.
The last word…
While data – how it is produced, stored, analysed and applied – is the key theme for 2019, developing technologies, such as voice control, superfast 5G mobile and connected cars, will gather pace through the year.
But these will only emphasise further how vulnerable our data is and how much harder we need to work to protect, own and value it.

How Designers Are Working Through This New Reality
COVID-19, or the Coronavirus, seemed to disrupt things overnight requiring people and businesses to alter how everything was done. The creative community has especially been hit hard with people’s priorities shifting to focus on how to stay employed, and more importantly, alive during these uncertain times. Regular fairs and festivals have been shuttered, showrooms and manufacturing facilities have closed up shop, and projects have been pushed off until the dust settles and some sense of normalcy returns. No one knows when this pandemic will end, so designers and small and independent businesses have had to re-think and re-strategize everything in order to stay afloat on a day-to-day basis. With so much uncertainty, we wanted to reach out to some favorites in our field – Bobby Berk, Kate Balsis, Scott Fellows, Nick Cope, Angie Myung, and Robert Highsmith – to see how they’re doing, how things have changed, and where they see things going.

On navigating the disruption- I’m not sure anyone’s lives haven’t been impacted in some way but our only choice is to figure out which way is up, push on, and stay as positive through all of this as we can. When anyone’s norm gets shaken, so do our day to day routines – even something as simple as getting gas or walking outside to retrieving the mail. We’ve never had to think about that to this extreme. Things are very different now, but that is ok. I’m so grateful that I’m with Dewey under the same roof, but also grateful we’re in a space that has separate rooms. We are both able to work remotely and we know our boundaries for one another which makes for any healthy co-habitating situation and a productive workflow while this is all going on.
On making business changes- No one knows how to get through this. Normally in business when you hit a roadblock, you figure out the answers, try solutions, and seek advisors. Now, there’s no playbook. For my business, we are working efficiently and effectively to be a resource for those who need it most. We have existing content and ongoing partnerships built out but have made the decision to shift our editorial and social calendar to focus on resources, tips, and hacks on how to be healthy and productive at home as well as constantly giving people an inspirational place to land to find respite from all of this. We aren’t steering away from what we know best (design) but right now it’s a balance of being a go-to for those who need it creatively as well as emotionally.
My entire team is working from home until further notice as my first priority is their safety and comfort. We host video conference calls and remain positive (insert sending gifs via mass text here). The first week we made a decision that video conf calls vs phone calls would give everyone a sense of community and social distance, and it’s allowed us to connect in a way we never have before. Seeing my team’s faces every day is something that always brings a smile to my face and I love connecting with them in that way to work through what is on the daily agenda.
On reimagining his business- My wheels are constantly churning as an entrepreneur and now beginning to think about what it will look like for “re-entry” post pandemic. When Dorothy landed in Oz, she didn’t know where to go but she got up with those red slippers on and figured her way through uncharted territory. It was new and unusual but she had to navigate her way through obstacles and learn how people were working along the way. I’m not quite there yet in terms of reimagining my business (or having my ruby slippers to click together to bring me back home), but I know that we will hit some forks in our yellow brick road.
On staying positive- It’s been overwhelming to see the “good” happening both locally and around the news. The news can be overwhelming, but if you are able to shut off the noise around Covid-19 for a minute, you can see all of the offerings people and businesses are sharing. Celebrities are banding together to create awareness and raise money, businesses are supporting small businesses, and our earth, for the first time is getting a breath of fresh air to exist without daily pollution. The bravery and efforts from all those in the medical field can also not go unnoticed. These professionals put their lives on the line every day and work so hard through all of this and it’s inspiring to see.
On hope for the future- Good things take time and this is no exception to the rule. A lot of hopes are being had from political to personal. I hope people continue to support small businesses, continue to see the importance in taking care of themselves and their team mentally and emotionally, and see the effects this has brought to our environment. Lessons can always be taken from every situation both good or bad and I hope that people pause to regroup during all of this and bring a focus back to what is really important in life.
Kate Balsis, partner + co-founder of Concrete Collaborative
On navigating the disruption- I think we are in the same boat as a lot of other privately-owned, small businesses where this type of economic uncertainty can be really stressful for owners. I haven’t been able to sleep and had this knot in my stomach of will we have enough revenue to make payroll? For us that meant scaling back and closing the New York and San Francisco showrooms temporarily.
On making business changes- I feel like I’m only finally getting my head above water after weeks of damage control and navigating all this new territory. My partners have been all hands on deck and jumped into action. It definitely brings you together as a team to navigate a true crisis. We have a truly supportive team that have stepped up in a big way through this.
On what she’s experiencing personally + professionally- Personally I have found the time to be quite tough with additionally juggling my kids’ school. I have three boys in 4th, 2nd, and kindergarten and they all have school full time online. I’m juggling their zoom calls with mine. It’s nearly impossible to run a business and get their work done at the same time. However, like many, I have no choice but to adapt. Shift my work schedule. Make the kids be as self sufficient as possible. We are in this together.
On staying positive- Ultimately I’m grateful we are safe and healthy. That perspective keeps me going, well that and coffee and wine. I am lucky to have a close network of friends, family, and work colleagues that keep me sane and laughing. In times like this especially you realize those relationships that matter the most.
On hope for the future- Coming out the other side, for all the negative, it has forced me to slow down. I don’t think I will ever take for granted the time I get out of my house, time I can dedicate to specific things and get breaks from others, in person meetings and being able to travel and eat out.
Scott Fellows
Craig Bassam
Scott Fellows, creative director + co-founder of BassamFellows with Craig Bassam (architect)
On navigating the disruption- I think, like everybody else, we are trying to take things one day at a time. We have the very real problem of some of our factories being temporarily closed, so we are navigating client expectations and trying to keep everyone informed on an on-going basis. The biggest challenge is the uncertainty of the length of the disruption. Once goods are flowing again, how long will it take for business to return to normal and what does the new normal look like?
On making business changes- Since the beginning of our company, our core team of employees and collaborators have always worked remotely/virtually, from Verona, to Milan, to London, to Connecticut, Pennsylvania – even Hawaii, so the remote working has not been a shock to the system. Now, clients are increasingly comfortable with online communication. We have several virtual client presentations and talks scheduled over the next several weeks and I’m really enjoying them. It is a way for us to connect with clients that is perhaps even more personal.
On reimagining the business- Before the pandemic we were planning for the biggest launch in our history in Milan at the Salone del Mobile. We were launching a new chair series called Petal, a chair that pushes the boundaries of 3D wood veneer and has much wider application in contract as well as residential settings. This product was developed over three years with top engineers and developers in Germany, the US, and Italy – each contributing to part of the manufacturing of each piece. Now, those global connections are being disrupted. How do you launch product without the global stage and a global design audience all immersed in design experiences? How do you continue to develop products, such as Petal, that leverage global expertise when supply chains are being disrupted?
We don’t want to retreat to “smallness” and we don’t think it is possible to shrink to greatness. Instead we are thinking about the “localization of the global.” We may be losing the world stage but we can still create powerful experiences such as a product launch event at our new headquarters building in CT – the former Schlumberger Administration Building, designed by Philip Johnson. We can also continue to invest in high quality craft here in the US, as we always have, but marry that with technical expertise and engineering that may exist elsewhere.
On what they’re experiencing personally + professionally- I remember when we first moved to CT from NYC more than 20 years ago, a friend commented to us that we chose “lifestyle.” To me, he was implying that we chose lifestyle over hard work and the success of a city life, which I found irritating at the time. The truth is that the decision to leave the city changed our lives. It set us on a journey where we began to blur the boundaries between life and work to the point that now they are virtually indistinguishable. We prioritize and invest in our physical spaces whether it is at home or at the office because we believe that physical environments are extremely important – light and space and uncluttered simplicity have a direct impact on our happiness. So I guess we did choose lifestyle after all.
During this crisis we are staying focused and productive and enjoying the space and nature that we are fortunate enough to have around us.
On staying positive- I think it is important to dedicate at least some of the time to visioning or imagining the future. The time to stop and think and work “on” the business, rather than “in” the business has been in short supply lately. We are relieved by the slower pace and are finding inspiration and ideas from our imagining of the future.
On hope for the future- I read somewhere about the origins of the word quarantine – that it is a spatial and temporal buffer. That got me thinking about adding a space and time buffer to our decision making and our buying decisions. I think most of us in the design world take a highly considered approach to purchases. Is it well designed for its function? Is it well made? Does it fit my life and my style? Do I really need it? For us, we ask ourselves whether it will be durable and desirable for decades. We hope the “fast” trend in fashion and design will be replaced with a new, “slow” trend – buy less, buy better, and use longer.
Rachel and Nick Cope
Nick Cope, co-founder of Calico Wallpaper + Cope with Rachel Cope
On navigating the disruption- These times are certainly unusual, fortunately, due to many of the digital systems we have in place we were able to move to remote work fairly quickly and seamlessly (good wallpaper pun!). Rachel and I are upstate at our house in Hudson because our kids are out of school and this affords them a lot more room to run around. Of course, we are having to share duties spending time with the kids so our combined work output is a little reduced at the moment.
On making business changes- The business is humming along and we are still designing, sampling, printing, and taking orders without much change at all. Our team has been excellent in handling these sudden changes heroically! We are so grateful that they are working hard to keep the company vision moving forward.
On reimagining their business- The sudden change has reminded me how fragile we all are in this complex ecosystem. Rachel and I have begun to discuss new goals and milestones for our business and although these are private at the moment, we hope to unveil new initiatives soon.
On what they’re experiencing personally + professionally- I feel like my life has done a bit of a 180 in the last month! Rachel and I are in a unique situation too because we are both partners in business and life. We are trying to balance these rapid personal and professional changes without friction and I feel like we have been doing a good job. I would say that it is nice to be upstate with a view of the Catskills out my window, however, I am pretty much glued to my computer at the moment and I miss the interactions with the team or even little trips to the cafe for a break.
On staying positive- Taking walks and spending time with the kids has been the best way to stay positive. Obviously, Tiger King on Netflix has made all the difference too.
On hope for the future- At the moment, I am just hoping for the other side to become clear. There may be some significant lasting impacts to this crisis and hopefully some of them are positive. For instance, attention to health insurance in the United States must become a priority. The system is totally nonsensical and should have been nationalized a century ago like much of the industrialized world. Also, climate change is another crisis that will be an increasingly disruptive force in our lifetime so maybe this crisis will remind us that it is time to act.
Angie Myung, chief creative officer + co-founder of Poketo with Ted Vadakan
On navigating the disruption- Doing the best we can to navigate this new territory. This crisis has upended the entire design and retail industry. We have closed all our our brick and mortar locations temporarily. We are directing business to www.poketo.com which is now the sole revenue channel. The outpouring of support by our customers has been amazing. People are shopping, we want to continue to provide joy to our customers in this time of crisis. Fortunately, so many of our products are perfect for #workfromhome.
On making business changes- We are now working remotely for much of our staff. We do frequent video chats via Google. We have directed our efforts to online and doing regular promotions to make shopping easier for our customers.
On reimagining their business- It has given us time to rethink. We will most likely emerge from this different, but stronger. When you get into a routine, it’s autopilot and you constantly are on the move. This time is allowing us to think about what’s important, how do we streamline, what do we want this new version of the business to look like. We don’t have the answers yet, we are taking things one day at a time.
On what they’re experiencing personally + professionally- It has been really tough. Especially with our team. We are a small, tight-knit group. We are used to seeing each other every day. Adjusting to remote working and not seeing each other face to face, to brainstorm together, to celebrate small victories together is different. Personally though, it has been nice to remember what is important, which is good health. Without health, what is there? So staying mentally and physically sharp is important. We’ve been taking longs walks with the dog, doing yoga, cooking meals at the house. It has been nice that way to reconnect with simple things.
On staying positive- Just knowing that the world is in this together, we are all in the same boat trying to navigate these unchartered waters is reassuring. Something I remind myself is that humans are like grass, we bend with the wind, we don’t break. I try to remember that.
On hope for the future- A healthy business, a team back to work, a strong community ready to create, love, do, make…. We miss our friends, our family, our community… we look forward to celebrating life, art, design, and creativity together once again (sans screen).
Robert Highsmith
Robert Highsmith, co-founder of WORKSTEAD
On navigating the disruption- By coming together – as a company and community. The disruption has inspired our team to be more collaborative and creative than ever. We have also been in close touch with many of our customers and clients – all partners in the design community – and projects, particularly large-scale residential and hospitality in the concept phase of development, are progressing. Supporting one another is crucial in this environment.
On making business changes- Our priority – on both the studio and product side of our business – has always been to provide design solutions and inspiration to our customers and clients. We had long planned on a monthly launch of light fixtures in 2020 and feel very fortunate to be in a position to proceed with that schedule, to continue adding to our assortment.

Traditional SEO is usually focused on building (keyword relevant) links and (keyword relevant) articles. The main reason could possibly be sometimes misunderstood is because which whole Internet underbelly of alleged SEO companies that you may pay to link to your own site on their networks associated with low-quality articles. However, before we obtain to our main event, I actually must note that after the 2017 edition of SEO tendencies launched last year on Lookup Engine Journal, we heard the couple of complaints about simply how long it was. After that your boss tells you if you're accountable for search engine optimisation (SEO), too. Michael jordan Harling, SEO Specialist at Roman Blinds Direct, agrees with the particular consensus that voice search may be the trend in 2019. One thing is definitely crystal clear: if you would like people to discover your function, you need search engine optimisation (SEO). This most means when you're thinking regarding your SEO strategy, you require to think about how your own social networking strategy fits into the particular puzzle, too. As your visitors slowly increases, ensure that you include additional SEO strategies (like adding exterior and internal links, guest publishing, etc) to engage more customers and keep your metrics higher. Google has remaining a very narrow band associated with opportunity when it comes in order to SEO - and punishments are created to take you out associated with the game for some period while you cleanup the infractions. Head of Marketing, He Edstrom, at BioClarity, a San Diego based health-science company, feels that SEO is going in order to see a decreased importance within 2019, and SEOs should begin ensuring they're competent in SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING. The best rank that you could see the profile with contact information and maps on right hands side of search result web page is achieved after long process for using SEO tactics. Numerous search engine search engine optimization. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the technique of enhancing a website for search motor discovery and indexing. SEO is actually a technique which search motors require that sites must improve properly, so that they show up high in search results. Supercharge Your E-commerce Revenues With These 3 UX Tactics
Live chat, video and product finders can help you massively boost your conversion rate
If you suddenly discovered you had superpowers, you’d use them, right? Of course you would! (and hopefully in a socially beneficial way). Well, I recently discovered a few user experience (UX) techniques that are proven to significantly lift E-commerce revenues, so I wanted to share these techniques so that you can starting use them yourself soon.
First I’ll describe the revenue ‘leverage factors’ each of these features provide. Then I’ll provide guidance on how to design and implement them for your eCommerce website.
The X factors, please
My recent analysis for a website that sells surveillance products found that the Revenue Per Visitor (RPV) - the top conversion metric for E-commerce websites - was amplified by the following factors:
By 3.9X when visitors used chat
By 1.7X when visitors viewed videos
By 2.2X when visitors used a product finder
In other words, visitors who used online chat produced nearly 4 times as much revenue as visitors who didn’t use chat. These values are even more impressive when they’re expressed as percentage: the 3.9X for chat equates to a 290% increase in revenues for visitors who used this feature. This obviously adds up to big revenue gains when it’s multiplied by a large number of visitors per month.
My team arrived at these factors by:
Installing the script for Evergage, a website personalization platform, on our client’s eCommerce website
Tagging all key website interactions
Creating segments of visitors (based on specific interactions)
Running reports to see the before/after effect of the UX updates
Taking the ratio of the RPV of visitors who used the feature to the RPV of visitors who were exposed to the feature, but didn’t use it
It’s a simple process - it just takes a few hours and a modest investment in a personalization tool. (I won’t get into the tool specifics or costs here - just know that the monthly tool cost pales in comparison to the insights and revenue lifts you get from creating custom visitor segments and viewing the available reports).
True, these ‘boost factors’ may vary across businesses. But considering that the above X factors are for discretionary products, not products that people need to buy every week or month, these factors are likely to be even higher for mass-market eCommerce sites.
Chat
It makes sense that chat would increase conversions because it’s a human interaction that requires little effort or motivation. Most people, especially those under 30, don’t want to actually talk to anyone while shopping; they’d much rather text, email or chat. So your website’s salespeople need to be where they are - online, knowledgeable, and eager to answer their questions.
If you don’t have chat on your site yet, you can get started by:
Researching and choosing a suitable chat tool
Training your chat (and phone) staff on customer service and sales best practices
Hooking your chat tool up to your Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, so your reps can do things like collect emails for follow-on marketing
Deploying the chat experience on your website
Improving both your chat tool and sales interactions over time
Since chat interactions provide the highest RPV boost, even if your chat experience isn’t awesome when first launched, you’re still likely to get a 1.5-2.0 X RPV boost. That’s nothing for you - or your CFO - to sneeze at.
Something else to keep in mind: You will also be gathering deep streams of prospect data from your chat logs. By mining these logs, either manually or with a text-mining tool, you’ll collect insights that will allow you to improve both your chat experience and other aspects of your conversion funnel.
Video
I learned the other day that the average session time on YouTube is 40 minutes per viewing session. No, not 40 seconds, or 4 minutes, but over half an hour. YouTube does this cleverly by auto-rolling playlists, showing related videos, personalizing the homepage, and other tactics. You end up saying, ‘Geez, where did the time go, I was just looking for how to jump-start my car. Now I’ve been watching Sean Spicer news conference videos for over an hour!’ We humans obviously love to watch videos and, with the high popularity of TV shows and movie streaming, I don’t expect this to change anytime soon.
So, how do you tap into this fascination, so that it lifts your conversions? First, you should script and produce some ‘explainer’ scripts for all of your site’s main usage scenarios and categories - content that explains key product features to consider, and the pros and cons of each. Don’t just blurt out features and specs; that will make your visitors’ eyes glaze over. Instead, assume that most of your visitors don’t know much about your company or your products, and don’t have the patience to be lectured. Assume that what they really want and need is guidance - ultimately reassurance - that they’re making a smart, well-informed choice.
After informing your visitors, you can then go into ‘demo mode’ - show videos of the product in use in real-life scenarios. These videos will make it real, and help your viewers visualize themselves using the product. If they’re using it in their minds, they’re well on their way to actually buying it. They just may need to get a quick question answered. Assuming that you’ve implemented chat (you will be, right?), those visitor interactions will ‘have your back’ in those situations.
Once your videos are done, post them to YouTube, social media, category pages, product pages. Get them out there so they can start driving engagement and getting your visitors to take that next conversion click.
Finders keepers
If you’re not familiar with product finders, here’s the best analogy: they are the UX equivalent of the real-life salesperson who greets you, asks you a few questions, then guides you to the best product for your situation. If this salesperson is good, she doesn’t just guide you to a single product, but to a complete solution. If she is bad - or doesn’t even connect with you - you just wander away and look elsewhere.
To find the questions - and answer choices - to put into your finder, ask a few experienced support reps the ‘qualifying questions’ they ask to guide prospects to the best product in the shortest amount of time. Then, after providing the right motivation for your call-to-action button (e.g. ‘Get your customized hidden camera! [subtext: ‘It only takes 30 seconds’), jump right into your questions. I’ve found that Lightbox layers are the best way to show the questions to desktop visitors. For mobile visitors, I’ve learned it’s best to show the questions directly on the page.
Keep in mind these guidelines are you create your questions:
Don’t ask more than 5-6 questions (4 is preferable)
Don’t offer more than 3 answer choices per question
Include tips below the answers that clarify the implications each answer (if necessary)
And when you show your recommendations:
Reiterate the answers the visitor provided
Present a higher-price ‘premium’ option to the left of a ‘standard’ one (based on the anchoring principle, the standard one will seem like a good value)
Provide a way for the visitor to save their recommendations (which gives you a reason to capture their email address)
Online, it’s less about building rapport, so you don’t need to include any introductory screens. Just dive directly from your finder call-to-action to the first question, and after the last question show your recommendations. Your visitors will appreciate your directness.
More visible, more boost
Now that you know how effective these power boosters are, you need to make them more visually prominent (within reason - please refrain from the flashing lights ‘Times Square’ syndrome). In addition to having ‘start chat’ button, push chat to visitors under certain conditions (for example, when they are stalled in the cart). Expose demo videos or finders on product pages. The more these features get seen and used, the higher the conversion rate - and RPV - boost you’ll get.
Remember to tag and track
When you deploy any of these tactics, be sure test their click-through rates and RPVs against your baseline experiences so that you can quantify the financial value of each update. Don’t put yourself in the position of spending time and emotional energy making updates, but having no way to quantify their financial impact. Begin with the end in mind - a compelling story to tell your CFO - and you’ll be sure to include all the tracking and reports you need.
Start using your superpowers now!
Put on your virtual cape and start working on adding chat, videos and product finders to your website, and see how quickly you can get them implemented. Don’t worry about making them perfect - just focus on getting something workable up and running as soon as possible. You can always perfect it later. Even if you ‘only’ get a 1.5X revenue lift initially, you’ll be getting a substantial ROI from your design and development investment. Your company’s CFO or owner will soon be singing your praises, and maybe even sharing some of those revenue gains.

Bodyweight Burn Review – My Personal Experience
Bodyweight Burn is a groundbreaking and very unique bodyweight training program. Within this system you'll discover how you can use "odd" exercises and strategic workout combos to boost your fat-burning by 67%, tighten your core, and increase the health of all your joints, while never exercising more than 21 minutes. It has been created by Adam Steer, "The Bodyweight Coach". Adam is a NCSA-CPT, NCCP 3, AKC Coach Biosignature Certified, MAT Lower Body Specialist and very well known within the fitness industry.
Hey Daniel here, and you're on my uncut bodyweight burn review where I'll share my personal experience and reveal what this fat loss and body weight training program is all about as well as the good points and bad points. If you would like to go directly to the official website, then click here.
I bought the Bodyweight Burn program myself, have gone through everything and I have fun doing the workouts
If you're looking for an unique and fun way to burn some fat and getting fit, than you should keep reading my review. You'll discover what Adam's body weight program is all about from a guy who does actually perform those workouts. If you would like to know more about me, than you can do that on my About Me page.
I bought this program, because I wanted some extra workouts which I can do without the need of any equipment, since we are campers and go out camping every weekend. I'm already following a program, Old School New Body, which does include weight lifting and so I wanted something which I could easily do during our camping days.

What Is The Bodyweight Burn System All About?
This system, also called BW3 Workout System, is a digital (downloadable) complete fat loss and bodyweight training system, with videos and ebooks, where you only use your body weight to perform the workouts and exercises. You now might think, oh no, not that boring push ups or crunches. Don't worry, this system offers so many more different bodyweight exercises than those ones. It's really a unique system which makes fun following and many of the exercises included, haven't been seen in other programs.
What I like most about the BW3 Workout System is, that it does include so many different exercises which can be done by everyone, doesn't matter if you're a beginner or pro and age doesn't matter either.
This body weight workout program is really not a gimmick, but a real program which does require consistent work.
What's the goal of the program? To burn off as much as 21 pounds of body fat and building lean muscles within 12 weeks, while you only have to workout 21 minutes a day.
The Bodyweight Burn Workouts
The 12 week Bodyweight Burn program uses 3 strategically chosen workout styles for optimal rapid fat loss. It's called the BW3 Workout System™ and includes the following types of exercises:
Bodyweight Cardioflow Workouts
Bodyweight Cardioflow Workouts are unlike any workout I’ve ever done before. It’s a bodyweight routine that places a series of exercises into one long flowing chain that fits together seamlessly.
Performed for time rather than reps, the goal is continuous, flowing movement with no breaks or rest pauses in between. It’s an excellent tool that burns extra calories while still allowing you to recover from your other intense training sessions. And the faster you recover, the more you can train - which means faster results.
Bodyweight Afterburner Workouts
Afterburner sessions are a unique form of high intensity body weight circuit training. These sessions have been developed to help burn off as much fat as possible in a very short of time. They are intensive, believe me, but they are also great and they help burning fat for about 24-38 hours after finishing the training session.
Bodyweight Metabolic-Muscle Workouts
This type of bodyweight workouts are designed to build or maintain lean muscle tissue. That lean muscle will improve the appearance, help moderate the insulin levels (thus changing the way we store fat), and help eat more calories and burn more fat even while at rest.
Personal Tip: Before you start doing the metabolic-muscle workouts, print out the wall charts. The go to the members are and watch all of the videos for the workouts and only then start doing those sessions. This will make it easier to remember the exercises and complete the session.
Optional with all those workouts you can do a 3 minute warm up before you start them and a 3 minute cool down after you finished them. The exercises for warming up and cooling down are described too and videos can be found within the members area as well.
PHASE 1: Metabolic Base (6 weeks)
Phase one is a 6 day workout plan which does include 2 metabolic-workout sessions, 2 afterburner sessions plus 2 cardioflow workout sessions. The 7th day is a recovery day with no workouts. This 7 day schedule remains the same during the first 6 weeks, but the exercises for the different workout sessions do change.
The goal of phase one is to build lean muscle mass which will begin to turn your body into a more efficient fat burning machine even as it improves the attractiveness of your physique.
You’re also revving up your metabolism and increasing your work capacity with Afterburner Workouts and Cardioflow. Work capacity is an important attribute. It forms the foundation of your fitness, and is a prime necessity regardless of your sport, occupation or lifestyle. Increasing your overall work capacity increases your baseline of fitness, which is the platform upon which specialized skills are developed. The skills and attributes you’re building in Phase 1 will give you the ability to make even faster progress in Phase 2 of Bodyweight Burn.
PHASE 2: Metabolic Explosion (6 weeks)
Phase 2 is also a 7 day schedule with 6 days working out and one recovery day. But in phase 2 you only have the afterburner sessions and the metabolic-workout sessions and the 7 day schedule remains the same for the 6 weeks.
During those 6 weeks you’re raising the stakes. You’re really hammering the Afterburner workouts in this part of the program, so you can take advantage of the EPOC effect. When you hit those Afterburner sessions hard, your body will continue to burn fat for 24 - 38 hours as you recover.
But you’ll only be able to take it to this level if you use every ounce of the firepower you built up in Phase 1 of Bodyweight Burn. Without that work capacity you simply wouldn’t have enough gas in your tank. This is it!
Who Is The Bodyweight Burn Program Right For?
For everyone. That's my opinion. I'm 44 (2015), had a hip replacement surgery in October 2014 and haven't had any issues doing these exercises and what I love most is, that I can do them anywhere. I only need an exercise mat and a resistance band for some of the exercises and that's it.
The program is also great for those who don't have much time, since a training day only takes about 21-30 minutes of your time.
These workouts are also great if you're already following another weight training or any other kind of fitness program. Do you enjoy jogging, or some other aerobics-type program? You could add three Metabolic-Muscle workouts per week so you can preserve that all important calorie-burning lean muscle mass.
However, if you look for a program to build muscle mass like a bodybuilder, then this might be not the right one.

The program does include different manuals as well as a huge video library which includes all of the exercises for the 12 week program.
