hmm.. on the whole, i’m not a fan of introducing kryptonite-style ‘magic weakness materials’ like vengestone simply bc it ends up being a copout excuse to deprive characters of their powers instead of actually constructing complex scenarios where their powers are still useful and relevant but aren’t enough to solve this specific problem, but with ninjago the alternative was just. them forgetting/losing their powers for whole seasons again so. tbh not really sure whether it was a loss or a gain

#ninjago #text✨#like it can be fun!! a power-deprive item *can* be interesting and fun when it’s used sparingly #but it always inevitably becomes the ‘every single villain inexplicably has this’ tool despite how much writers try to prevent it #see: actual kryptonite. people use it CONSTANTLY bc they think superman stories are supposed to be about fighty punching instead of (as OSP #wonderfully put it: minimizing collateral damage)#but also in the specific case of ninjago i’m SO torn bc they handle the question of their powers so badly throughout it i genuinely can’t #decide if having a metaphorical power-off button that’s temporary is better than how much they #constantly tripped over themselves to explain why they couldn’t instantly solve all their problems with their allegedly uber powerful powers #back in the early seasons. instead of just going to the source and WRITING BETTER PROBLEMS #like at least now the bullshit is temporary. but it’s still WAY overused and frustrating #this idea will def evolve as i get further into actually rewatching. mulling it over for now #i’d probably be less conflicted if vengestone had more repercussions/was less common/and just. not the automatic excuse for EVERYTHING #HOWEVER: power *stealing* items? fun as hell #universally a great idea idc how frustrating the story ends up the shenanigans possible make it worth it #YOINK that impulsive heroic dumbass’s sense of identity. hell yeah
