Calum is exhausted. Mentally and physically. He realized a couple of months ago that he’d never be able to do anything that you’d deem good enough, but he couldn’t leave. Cal was drawn to you and had feelings for you, even if they aren’t reciprocated.
He did anything you asked for, even if it meant letting his friends down or rearranging his plans for the week. You’re always appreciative, but never satisfied and you don’t hold back in letting him know.
At first, he was aware that you were waiting for him to prove that he could be with you. Now, you don’t care anymore, but you still keep him around. He’s already proved everything he could, but your expectations are just too high.
He could build you a palace, and you’d tell him all you wanted was a room for one. No room for him.
Calum thinks you could watch him drown but not realize until he’s already six feet underground. As silly as it sounds, all things considered, he’d take a bullet for you. He’d still do anything, even as he’s realizing that it’s not right, and also if it meant he went insane.
Today feels different like he’s more exhausted and not as prepared to deflect your words, but he’s coming over anyway because you asked. He has your favorite coffee in his hand, thinking maybe it’ll soften the blow. Calum was supposed to be there ten minutes ago, but he’s only just arrived.
Instead of finding you in your apartment, you’re standing in the elevator when it opens to pick him up. ”Oh, hey. You're late so I made plans. If you want to wait, you know where the key is. I'll be back... Sometime. Maybe a few hours.”
Calum nods, holding out his hand with the coffee. One corner of your mouth turns up into a small smile as you two trade places. Cal sighs, he's likely to fall asleep if he stays here. Knowing you, you probably wouldn't be back until tomorrow, but she expects you to wait.
The door is about to close when Calum surprises himself and sticks his hand out, so the door opens back up. You turn around, curious about the noise, and raise an eyebrow.
”Cal? What are you doing?”
”I'm going home. I'm tired, Y/N. Call me when you get back, and I'll come over.” He says plainly. He's too tired to make you feel like he cares.
”You always stay and wait. I was hoping you'd make me dinner.” You bat your eyes like you've done a thousand times, but it doesn't make Calum feel the way he used to. It hits him at this moment that he doesn't want to impress you anymore. That doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. He thinks it hurts more so because of his feelings that are still very much existent.
”Just for you to not come back until tomorrow? I know how this goes. I’d wait all night, only for you to come back around this time tomorrow and tell me you're sorry, and you lost track of time. You didn't. You never do because you always know when I'm even fifteen seconds late. I believed for too long that maybe you wanted this to work eventually, but you don't. I've done everything I possibly can, I've almost changed who I am, and there's nothing left to prove. I'll never be worthy of you, Y/N, so I'm going.”
Calum uses the sleeve of his sweatshirt to try and wipe the tears from his eyes, but it's no use. He waits for just a moment, and then he walks past you, back to his car. You don't say anything for two reasons: Calum knew you wouldn't, and he's right. There's not anything you could say that he hasn't already thought about.
When he's in his car, out of your view, Cal has to wait a good thirty minutes before he can even consider being a safe driver. After all the shit you put his through, this shouldn't hurt as bad as it does. He always thought that the day he decided to walk away, he’d be fine. That by then, he’d be so tired of you that there weren't any feelings left. Calum was one hundred percent wrong, but he's not going back.
