Interview with Holger Badstuber about Bayern vs Stuttgart match pt1

Your two former clubs meet on Sunday. Do you think VfB Stuttgart can spring a surprise in Munich or do you expect a strong reaction from Bayern after the debacle in Frankfurt?
That's not so easy to say, as there hasn't been a top match between Bayern and Stuttgart for a long time. I last watched VfB in the stadium against BVB. They play good football, are confident and consistent. They will definitely come to Munich fresher, as Bayern had to play at United during the week.
After the debacle in Frankfurt, you really expect Bayern to react and if they play up to their potential and are aggressive, then it will be difficult for VfB to survive there. In any case, I'm very excited.

What do you think are the most important factors in VfB's upswing?
There is calm within the club and Sebastian Hoeneß brought in a certain stability and structure as soon as he arrived. He has continued this despite the high-profile departures in the summer. In Alexander Nübel, they have brought in a good goalkeeper who plays with confidence, has a good understanding of the game and radiates calm. In addition, the back four, together with Stiller and Karazor in front of them on the double six, looks very stable and familiar with each other, so that they can defend a lot together. And up front they not only have Guirassy, who scores, but also a second striker in Undav, who also works well together. Overall, it's a good combination and that's why VfB are rightly in third place.
Thesis: VfB will play in Europe next year. Would you agree?
At the moment, the impression is that everything is running smoothly. If that is also the case at the end of the season, then VfB will certainly be playing in Europe next year.

It was stable against United, but the debacle in Frankfurt exposed some glaring weaknesses in the FCB defense. It's no coincidence that they conceded the most goals in the league (4) after individual mistakes. Do you think the defense is up to the highest standards?
If you only consider the quality of the individual players, you might assume that. In defense, however, it's all about teamwork and trust. At the moment, I have the impression that the feeling for each other is still lacking in the defense.
Can you be more specific?
The defense has looked a bit more stable recently, but sometimes they play too carelessly - like recently in Frankfurt. When you're 1:0 and then 2:0 down, you actually have to come together and say: "Now let's focus on the defense so that we don't concede another goal." That's a mindset that the whole team has to adopt, but they're not doing that. That's why the defense looks full of holes and then the question automatically arises as to whether this composition is enough for the really big games.

Has Bayern ever been able to compensate for the departure of David Alaba and does the club lack a vocal defensive leader who gives commands and directs?
From the outside, yes. It's important to be vocal at the back, to provide support and to have an organizing hand. When I'm in the stadium, I pay a lot of attention to how the defensive players behave towards each other. At Bayern, there is little communication and they don't push each other enough to stop the opposition and not allow any goalscoring opportunities.

Dayot Upamecano is playing his third season at Bayern. Do you see him developing further and do you think he can still play a leading role?
In Leipzig, Willi Orban was the captain and a club icon was his partner, and he was able to develop wonderfully alongside him, but Bayern Munich is a different club. It's not a training club, it's a club that wants to compete for three titles year after year. Upamecano has great potential from a footballing point of view, he has also improved compared to last year, but in terms of his personality I don't see him as a leader. You can't fool yourself and artificially impose the role on the player. It has to be intrinsically motivated.
Tumblr media
How do you rate the start of new signing Min-jae Kim?
It's still too early for an assessment. He is playing solidly, but still has to get used to the team, the rhythm and the demands, which were not so high in Naples. At Bayern, the double is always a must, it's a completely different challenge mentally. You can't underestimate that
Tumblr media
And what is your impression of Matthijs de Ligt?
I have often expressed my opinion on him in the past. The fact is: In Turin, he didn't make it as an absolute regular, Chiellini and Bonucci were the bosses there. It's also a fact that he didn't play much at the World Cup under Louis van Gaal. And although he was captain at Ajax, that needs to be put into perspective.
Please
Of course he has a certain quality, but the armband on his arm is also often used these days to increase the market value and make the player stand out even more - regardless of whether he has leadership qualities or not. Perhaps that was also Ajax's thinking. Last season he was given the role of leader at Bayern, and the result speaks for itself with just one title and many goals conceded.
Tumblr media
So does Bayern need to become active on the transfer market?
In my opinion, they need to improve their defense, especially after the departures of Pavard and Stanisic. I was very surprised that they let them go within a very short space of time in the summer without bringing in replacements. But I think they realized themselves that the transfer window was unfortunate. They need to find a player who fits the mold and is as flexible as Pavard. Someone like that would do them good, but players of that quality are not easy to find and are highly sought after.
