We were and are mediocre in world football. The boos given by the fans at Schalke on Tuesday are understandable.

However, the sooner we realize that in 2024 we are just an outsider, the easier it will be to accept this role. Psychologically, that may not be a bad thing, so there is more to gain. In any case, we must quickly focus on forming a strong unit. On and off the pitch.

The whole construction remains unstable from front to back. There is often talk of a "process" in which the team is still finding itself. But Hansi Flick's behavior alone in television interviews shows that he too is far from satisfied. He seems pissed off. Actually, I expected more enthusiasm, more self-confidence and more conviction from him at this stage. I miss the sovereignty. Nevertheless, we have to trust him and his undisputed experience.

The next opponents are Japan, France and USA in September and October; by then, their framework should be ready. I would like to wait and see before I can really judge the "process".

For me, however, one thing is clear: Ilkay Gündogan performed at the highest level as captain of Manchester City and won titles. He should be positioned in midfield. Joshua Kimmich helps the national team better at right-back. Football is about biting the bullet and not playing in your favorite position. In defense he can give a lot to the team.

A clear identity also requires courageous decisions. That's why I absolutely cannot understand why the DFB is allowing discussions about Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer to go on forever. They are icons for Germany. Other nations have their deserving veterans who have played for a long time and celebrated success. In Spain it was a Busquets, in Italy a Bonucci: it shouldn't be about their age, but their value to the team. If Müller and Neuer are fit, they have to play for the German national team.

With his experience, Müller can always have a positive influence up front, where we have big problems scoring goals because there are no connections, no automatism due to constant changes.

In the national team we are currently lacking what has been forgotten in the training of young players in recent years: the character and attributes that have distinguished us as a nation in major tournaments such as willingness to sacrifice, fighting spirit, discipline, perseverance, endurance and courage. We have been able to show perseverance, perseverance, endurance and courage. That is why Germany did not deserve a victory recently.

However, I also see developing an awareness of this as a great opportunity for some young players. The players who now get the opportunity to present themselves can score tremendously if they live exactly these qualities 120 percent.

Honestly, I can agree with a lot of Holger's ideas, except with Ilkay, in selection he never maxes out like he does with C*ty and I really hope that changes because you can't be such an uncommitted captain
