PUNE: Rashmi Tolani, a teacher with a CBSE school in the city, was taken by surprise when she was told that in one week she will have to take her Maths class through the virtual medium. “This was more than one month ago on March 13. I was lost. I am a teacher for 24 years and teaching students on a screen was difficult for me to digest. One month post these sessions almost every day, I feel like a pro now and I can conduct any online class. But, this was a difficult transformation.” admitted Tolani.
Getting the hang of technology in terms of adjusting webcams to uninterrupted streaming of an online class and also creating e-learning content for their subjects, teachers across schools and colleges are adopting virtual teaching, slow and steady. Not many knew just a month ago that addressing students on a screen would be the new routine for teachers. While the challenges for private schools were relatively less as many had e-learning in place, there are many schools who had to start from creating content, changing teaching plans, keeping students engaged, and also ensure that they get familiar with using various learning platforms.
Schools that are already using digital platforms said that their challenge was to conduct the classes 100% online, ensuring that the concepts are delivered in the exact manner as they would be in a face-to-face classroom. Radhika Vaidya, French teacher at the Victorious Kidss Educares (VKE), an IB world school, said, “While conducting Extended Essay orientation with the students, we realised that technology has turned out to be a boon for us in this time of crisis. For all the classes, from sharing the notes to conducting the assessments to communicating with the parents, we have turned 100% digital.”
The teachers at VKE, designed their online learning sessions with the objective of engaging students constructively in their learning process. Creative worksheets on respective units, interactive sessions on visual prompts, brainstorming sessions and appreciating a literary piece were effective with online apps like Skype, Managebac and Google classroom, said Language and Literary English teacher at VKE, Sarika Vaze.
Principal of Mansukhbai Kothari National School said that, the announcement of shutting schools in mid-March by the government came as a sudden jerk for all. When it was decided by school management to conduct online classes, it looked like a huge task. The school had to redesign and revise the curriculum for online teaching, train students, rope in IT experts for technology among other challenges. Logistically, the school had to make provision for 53 classes and 2,000 students in just a week.
“We had to shortlist topics that were best for teaching online and look up some education technology platforms for clues and adopt those based on our needs. For example, a grammar lesson by an English teacher is available online with so many companies offering free lessons. Our teacher had to take a clue from there and adapt it based on our curriculum.”
Apart from his, the readiness of parents and students was also done alongside and the first week was only about fun activities and getting used to the new system. Now, the school is also conducting art, music, and teakwood classes online.
Commissioner of education, Vishal Solanki said, “Nothing can replace a face to face interaction but our teachers should also learn to teach online in an effective way in view of today’s reality.”
Now the role of teacher is changing drastically from instructor to facilitator, said Vikas Garad, deputy director at the Maharashtra state council for education research and training (MSCERT). The council has been instrumental in creating online content for schools and also training teachers in adopting e-learning strategies in government schools.
Grad said, “To utilise this time and to give justice to students demand teachers will certainly adapt the changing e – environment. Fortunately, many government teachers had already started creating their own e-content in various ways, they have their own YouTube channels, videos, QR codes and have been bracing up for something like this since past two-three years. Network availability and continuous connectivity is the main challenge for government schools. Most of the parents in rural areas don’t have the internet connectivity. For them, DTH and radio is the solution.”
Ruchita Rawat, principal and teacher at Sanskriti School Wagholi, said, “There is active collaboration from the entire group of teachers. Since we have three schools we have the benefit of scale and sharing best practices and ideas across the board. We have decentralized ideation and content creation into smaller groups so there is more content generation. This is then vetted by a senior team to ensure conformity to our expected standards.”

Students coming from different words have a different way or ideating things and seeing the world. There is often this distinction made between the two major boards in the country ie. 1. ISC:
ISC or better known as ICSE has the following features which you can gain benefit from.
·ISC board students have a better command over English language as the board emphasizes a lot on the fluency of the students in English.
·ISC board students can directly seek admission in Oxford or Cambridge for further studies if they have a decent score and have passed out from this board.
·Syllabus is vast but you get to learn a lot and it helps you develop your analytical skills as the syllabus is designed in that particular way.
·Many ICSE students claim they have a difficulty in cracking exams like JEE, NTSE, etc. because these exams are based on the CBSE curriculum.
2. CBSE
·CBSE curriculum gives an edge to the students when it comes national level entrance exams. So if you aim to crack any one of those, you know which board is gonna be right for you.
·CBSE curriculum is quite compact and most people manage it through normal schooling without extra coaching.
·CBSE certificate is recognised all over India and there are schools all across India. So if you move out amidst your schooling, you shouldn't be worried about your education.
POINT OF DIFFERENCE:
·The medium of instructions in CBSE is both Hindi and English whereas ICSE prefers on English.
·On one hand CBSE allows regular and private candidates both to appear for their boards. Such as kids who are not even studying in non-affiliated schools can appear for their exams too. But in the case of ICSE, no student who hasn’t studied in an ICSE affiliated school is not eligible to give the final board exams.
·CBSE has a national recognition granted by the government of India, but ICSE doesn’t share that privilege. Although both of them are internationally renowned but CBSE is a safer option when a student wants to pursue higher education within the country.
·When it comes to the entire syllabus, CBSE helps a child prepare for national level medical and engineering exams. But that’s not the case with ICSE exams, they are very detailed in their approach and hence requires the student to remember a lot. Their places of focus are also different. CBE focuses majorly on the sciences and maths. ICSE believes in giving the child a balances education by focusing equally on arts, science and languages.
·In the field of assessments, ICSE is very detailed, for them the internal test marks matter and are clubs with the total final score. They like focusing on lab work, students from ICSE can perhaps even make a suitable career in English literature or language.
·Finally if the teaching styles of both have to be discussed, both the boards are trying to keep up with the changing times. Now it is more about interactive and experimental or practical learning. Now it is not just about one way teaching but about making children involved in the entire process. CBSE now doesn’t believe in a conclusive process hence not grooming their students with interpersonal skills but ICSE focuses on detailed education for each subject and also focus on the English language giving the children a Inherit sense of accomplishment and excellence.
