is it because i'm getting older and gayer or is there really a surge of self-help books happening around me? and am i a curmudgeon to say that they're bullshit?
#why read some boring bland thing when you can read a memoir or a poem or a novel that breaks you open in a new and interesting way?#idk it's just a genre that's never appealed to me#and there appears to be this book culture that values the self-help genre as 'more virtuous' than fantasy or other types of fiction and it'#just....grow up. read what you want#idk if a book has helped you then that is great for you#but....there's just so much more stuff to read#and not everything one reads should be a how-to guide on how to live life#there's parts of the brain that ignite and exercise when you read something that isn't explicitly designed to be directed at you.
