i hate herman unworthy so bad i have not stopped thinking about this stupid fucking character for a single day the past couple months. i am going to punt them back into outer space. slash affectionate i love them help why are they literally one of my Characters Of All Time

also ngl its strangely... cathartic to see an abuser and abuse victim portrayed the way they are in dndads? it doesn’t feel cartoony or a “haha i’m so Evil >:)” thing tht some ppl have done bc let’s just turn this extremely real thing that happens in real life into an Evil Character and thts it thts all we’re gonna do there

like. idk, you see the lasting impression it’s left on ron. and it did well to build up the dislike of willy stampler before we met him (bc i think the full-blown “i hate this bastard, fuck you” happens more after he’s officially there) because we see ron, we know how ron behaves and how the whole pants-thing was a coping mechanism for him since im 99% sure beth may said ron used to hide in the laundry basket when willy came home

and like. i dont know, its just weirdly cathartic as an abuse victim who’s dealt with and still is dealing with her abuser for years and already knows the aftermath is there and irreversible. ron’s insecurities are a dad are something i kinda get and i don’t even have kids yet??? it’s just a huge “what if i end up like this person” that just kinda looms over you, and we can see that when ron is extremely nervous as a step-dad. 

which also makes me glad for samantha because she’s always portrayed as being extremely kind and gentle and understanding with ron? so haha dont think about ron opening up about his father to samantha at one point and she just kinda immediately knows because she’s seen ron, who i imagine 100% would get extremely nervous around terry jr or when the topic of terry jr came up in any capacity and she’s just. she’s so good. samantha i love u.

i just kinda think anthony and beth are both handling this extremely well but tht’s just my take on it? it doesn’t feel like a cheap “willy stampler is eeeevil” but a “he’s an abuser and he knows the fear he holds over ron and others and can and will use it to his advantage” since shit extends past ron and is affecting the other bad dads and my fucking son paeden bennetts fuck you willy thats MY boy

thts. p much it i just like how things are being handled and how it never feels like just a token “wow hes an abuser so ofc he’s evil” sort of thing? like. maybe it’s true, but it never feels like a cheap way to turn him into a villain because i’ve definitely seen novels and other works that take parental abuse and try to use it as a cheap way to make ppl hate a character and fail extremely miserably to the point where the “abuser” is making complete sense in all of their actions because it’s not even abuse. it’s just the protagonist being a brat and saying “this is so unfaaaaair, my parent is telling me to not waste these extremely limited resources (bc the worldbuilding has established these are extremely limited and we’re already supposed to be broke), what a bitch.”
