Gear Along the Ohio . I love running along the great rivers of North America when I can, and the mighty Ohio River is my favorite. I have lived and worked in a number of places along the river in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The Ohio and its small river towns and big river cities are like old friends, familiar and comforting. . I hung out in and around Madison, Indiana yesterday and grabbed a few shots along the Ohio for upcoming reviews of favorite gear. Gear I bought. Gear I use every day. Gear I’ve come to depend on heavily as I travel around North America. . It started raining as I left Madison, rained all last night, has been raining hard as hell all day today, and is supposed to continue through ‘til tomorrow morning. There are flood watches out all over the place. . HATS . I’m always trying out different hats, looking for a good one that will serve more than one purpose. . I like my hats as much as I like my boots. Keep your head and feet warm and dry and you’ll have a much better, healthier, and happier time outdoors. . I need a good hat to, in order of importance: - be rugged and able to stand up to daily abuse for a long time - be comfortable all day long - stay on my head in all sorts of weather, and - still look halfway decent. . I need hats that will protect my ever growing-bald noggin from the sun. It happens when you’re 82. You wait, you’ll see. . More importantly, for the amount of time I spend outdoors, I need a hat that’ll keep my head and shoulders dry in bad weather. Nothing worse than getting cold rain down your neck and back inside your jacket. I don’t often like wearing a hood when working or walking outside as I can’t always hear everything around me as well. . . I wear a ball cap most of the time, but when I have greater need for protection from the weather, I’ve been reaching for the hat in this post more and more, an Akubra Cattleman. . It has a great dipped brim, bound edge, three eyelet vents each side to let heat out, comfortable leather sweatband on the inside that is amazingly cool in hot weather, and a double kangaroo plaited hatband with brass fittings. For the looks part of things, I love this new Bluegrass Green color. . Like most of other good, long-lasting gear, you’ll find you have to pay for quality and durability. It’s less expensive in the long run, actually, to pay for gear that’s going to last several times longer than something less expensive. .
