Dzongs (castles) were built by the Zhabdrung who, having fled from Tibet after an assassination attempt and sent a letter of defiance once in Bhutan, needed strong defenses against the Tibetan and Mongol invasions. These fortresses are built on ridges with a command over the valley or ancient routes or defensible locations moated by rivers on one side and mountains on the other. Anything of note that happened in the country has happened in a Dzong. The structure usually consists of towers at four corners connected by thick walls. There is a central tower that was used as the seat of the commanding official. The walls and windows have embrasures for archers. Dzongs continue to serve as the administrative centers as well as housing for monks. The Paro Dzong, pictured above is also provided with a circular watchtower above it. The main statue here is that of the present Buddha when he was yet the 20 year old prince Siddharth.
