31 Days of Dead 2020 | Day #5: “Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance > Jam” – Kansas City, KS 12/11/79

December 5
Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance > Jam
12/11/79 – Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Hall • Kansas City, KS
We have a third and final album anniversary to celebrate and that is the release of Go To Heaven, forty years ago on April 28, 1980. It is the Grateful Dead’s first album with keyboardist, Brent Mydland, who joined the band in the spring 1979. Ironically, it would also be the last studio album the band would record until 1987. Bob Weir had a greater influence on Go To Heaven than he did on previous studio albums, contributing three original songs. Two of those contributions were “Lost Sailor” and “Saint of Circumstance” which were usually played as a medley.
Keeping with my theme of unique performances, I selected this version of “Lost/Saint” from 12/11/79. Here, the band comes to a complete stop after “Sailor” and then they launch into a mini “Saint” jam. After “Saint,” they drift into an “Estimated” jam(!)
Each song in the “Lost/Saint” medley provides us with a reference for 2020. “Lost Sailor” throws a musical life preserver in a year of very rough seas for the 300,000 crew and passengers on cruise ships worldwide who were stranded at sea for months, unable to dock due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
You’re a lost sailor You’ve been too long at sea Now the shorelines beckon Yeah, there’s a price for being free
“Saint of Circumstance” references one of Netflix’s most popular and outrageous documentaries ever – “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.” The story of Joe Exotic and Carol Baskin has everything – tigers, lions, murder, a gay redneck throuple, a 1-armed lesbian, alligator arson, mullets, pizza made from expired Walmart meat, a zoo based sex cult, a crazy cat lady and country songs about tigers and gay love.
Just a tiger in a trance
