ok now that the anime has reached the red dragon chapters.... i think ryoko kui has done such a fantastic job at creating this whole setup
i think its really cool how she sets the dungeon up to operate on almost video game logic in which people can easily be revived within the dungeon so when falin gets eaten there isn't a huge sense of urgency for both the viewer and for the other characters because it's played as just being the setup for the funny haha monster food story
and i DO think that this is deliberate because the viewers are lulled into this sense of "everything is going to work out!" because that's how the other characters see it too! they think getting falin from the dragon would be easy but fail to consider that she might actually be dead for good and when they pull falin's bones out of the dragon that becomes a very shocking realisation that the characters and the viewers get at the same time it's so *chefs kiss*
we can laugh at laios being so autistic (tm) about his monster food that he forgets about his sister but it's true! up till this moment in the story he thinks that everything is fine because it's always worked out in the past so falin becomes an afterthought... he makes the same mistake again during the winged lion arc and i don't think that's unintentional either- i like to think that to an extent he is holding out hope for her but i think it's more aligned with the themes that he is also in denial and doesn't want to believe that his sister is dead
