Cute wolf ear Yata yes please *^* So imagine Fushimi is like this traveling merchant making his own way in life, he ran away from his village as soon as he was old enough to be on his own and he's been traveling by himself ever since. His mother is this really skilled trader who briefly quit her profession when she married her genius husband Niki, only to leave both her husband and son once she realized what a shitweasel Niki was. Everyone in the town hated Niki, who was a genius but refused to use his intellect for anything besides pranks and teasing his young son. Even once Niki died Fushimi could tell that he wasn't welcome in town, a few townspeople tried to act like they would watch over him but Fushimi knew they were only doing so because it made them look good and really no one cared about him. Once he had enough money saved he bought a cart and a horse and set off on his own, traveling from town to town and never stopping anywhere for long.
One night he's sleeping in his cart on the outskirts of the village, even though it's cold out and Fushimi dislikes how uncomfortable the cart is he still never sleeps in actual villages. He's curled up on himself shivering when he suddenly feels this warmth around him, it makes him sleepy and he actually manages to get a decent night's sleep. He wakes up the next morning to find a cute wolf boy wrapped around him, Fushimi's immediately up with a knife in his hand demanding to know who this stranger is and why they're in his cart. Yata yawns as he sits up, he's totally naked and his ears and tail are obvious. Yata wonders why Fushimi's pointing a knife at him, like you know without me you probably woulda frozen to death. Fushimi snorts and says some shrimpy wolf isn't enough to keep someone from freezing to death, Yata's like don't call me shrimpy even as he stands up and proudly proclaims himself this great red wolf who protects the village. Fushimi snorts and says Yata's some stray idiot who stayed here too long then, like obviously this town isn't the type now to need to ask any kind of guardian deity to watch their crops so Yata's likely been useless here for ages. Yata tries to deny it but eventually he ends up having to grudgingly admit that Fushimi's right, he came here a long time ago and now he wants to go home. Fushimi doesn't see what that has to do with him and Yata grins as he's like because I'm letting you be the guy who takes me back.
Fushimi's immediately like no thanks get out of my cart, Yata's all come on I'm a great wise wolf offering to help you you should be thankful asshole. Fushimi says Yata's just a stowaway and Yata kinda has to scramble to convince Fushimi not to kick him out, like I swear I can help, a skinny guy like you probably needs protection right I can do that. Fushimi shows off all his hidden knives and says he doesn't need protection, especially from a shrimpy wolf, and Yata's like maybe I should just eat you okay how about that. Fushimi eventually agrees to at least take Yata to the next town, tossing a cloak at him and telling him to get dressed and keep quiet or else Fushimi really will push him out of the moving cart.
So at first their relationship is super antagonistic, Fushimi doesn't have any interest in Yata and Yata's starting to think maybe he should find another cart. But then they get to town and maybe Yata gets to see Fushimi's merchant skills, like despite his bad personality Fushimi's a really amazing merchant. At one point though his bad attitude starts to get him in trouble and Yata steps in, like Yata's outspoken honest personality helps smooth things over and get some potential clients to agree to trade with Fushimi because they take Yata to be trustworthy. Fushimi grudgingly admits that Yata was helpful and Yata's like see we could be a great team, you're an amazing guy and I could help you be even more amazing. No one's ever called Fushimi amazing before and he finds himself agreeing to take Yata a little farther at least.
Soon they're basically traveling everywhere together, Yata trying to get info about his hometown Homra in between work. Fushimi finds himself getting more and more on edge though the closer they seem to be getting to Homra, like he's starting to get used to having Yata there and he doesn't want Yata to leave him. Yata's starting to have his own misgivings too, like he really wants to go home but he also feels like Fushimi is someone he can't leave alone, without Yata there to make sure he eats and sleeps and doesn't do anything stupid because he thinks he's smarter than everyone then who knows what kind of trouble Fushimi could get in (also imagine at some point Fushimi pisses off the wrong guy and gets kidnapped, Yata goes after him and Fushimi gets to see Yata's real form as this huge red wolf that starts attacking all Fushimi's assailants in order to save him).

An AU where everyone has daemons (the ‘His Dark Materials’ brand). When did their daemons settle and what kind of animal did they settle as?
Obviously Fushimi has a penguin, it's canon :P Animal K would be the easiest answer but I like the idea of a bit more variety. Mikoto's is the easiest one though, he definitely has a lion and his probably settled at an early age to no one's surprise, his personality is just so intrinsically lion-like that anything else would have been strange. He would be one of the rare people with a same-sex demon though, since Mikoto's personality is more lion than lioness, even as a kid I imagine him walking around with this full grown male lion and looking totally chill about it. Munakata by contrast I could see going with animal K and having like a big shaggy wolf which gets along horribly with Mikoto's lion. Though I admit I do kinda like the idea of Munakata having a peacock daemon, just imagine Mikoto and Munakata fighting and there's Munakata's peacock waving its tail in the face of Mikoto's lion with the perfect aura of 'smug bastard' just radiating from it.
For the rest of Homra, Anna's I think wouldn't settle until at the earliest when she becomes King. I could see her daemon settling as some kind of red bird to mimic her Red King phoenix, like a red-tailed hawk or a brahminy kite. Totsuka would probably have something small and mostly helpless, like his animal K sheep would actually kinda work especially if it constantly manifests as a lamb (plus bonus 'lion and lamb' imagery with Mikoto). Or maybe something small like a cute dwarf rabbit or a field mouse, something little and relatively powerless which nevertheless is perfectly calm with Mikoto's lion. Similarly Kusanagi having an owl would be kinda amusing, especially if people keep commenting on the similarity between himself and his daemon and he gets annoyed by it, though I could also see him having something with strong motherly instincts like some species of monkey (or something interesting like a spider, carrying babies on her back and weaving webs in the background while also keeping the bar free of bugs). Yata would likely have something high energy, like he gets his very own chihuahua demon. Though actually I could see Yata having some kind of dog demon, like an African painted dog which is high energy and wants to form social bonds with everyone, once he finds Homra it's like he's got his 'pack' at last.
Fushimi I could see having something standoffish that tends to snap when in danger and his daemon probably settled early at least partly due to Niki's abuse. I could kinda see him maybe having some type of snake, likely something venomous like a type of cobra or an adder (Niki, naturally, has a mongoose and laughs whenever Fushimi's snake tries to bite him). Having a snake makes Fushimi probably stand out amongst most of his peers, while everyone else's daemons are settling as mammals or birds here he's got this snake on his shoulder at all times whose presence is like a physical wall around him and it will only slightly relax around people that he's close to. His snake never liked Mikoto's lion and was always coiling near him but it doesn't seem to mind Munakata's stupid peacock at all. Awashima I think would have some kind of Tundra animal to match her nickname, like maybe a snowy owl (and then Kusanagi has a barn owl so they have a match) or even a snow leopard like her animal K self.
For the Greens, I wonder if Hisui would even have a daemon since he's technically dead, like did it disappear when he died and then reappear once the Slate resurrected him. Maybe he makes it look to everyone that Kotosaka is his daemon but really somewhere in jungle there's a small green very rare breed of parakeet that's in like a perpetual stasis and is kept somewhere very safe because it belongs to the King. I feel like for Iwafune a raven would work really well, it just fits his whole black aesthetic thing. Oh maybe he used to have a dove when he was Ootori Seigo and then his daemon actually underwent a shift after the Kagutsu Crater, like the emotional blow was so heavy on him that it caused his daemon to change. Yukari I see having something beautiful but deadly, like imagine him having this brilliantly colored poison dart frog as his daemon. Sukuna's probably wouldn't have settled yet during the time of the series and it only finally does later on after Hisui dies (for some reason I imagine him with like a weasel, to match his weapon).
The Silvers, Kuroh definitely has some form of large dog, maybe even something like a maned wolf. Neko I think would have a cat as her daemon too but probably not a normal house cat, I could see her having something rare or endangered like a flat-headed cat or Andean cat. Shiro feels like he should have some kind of bird too, like maybe an Albatross or something, though I do like the idea of him having a mouse just to fit the theme of his clansmen – actually it'd be interesting if he had just a plain small white mouse, similar to the type that gets used in scientific experiments and people often assume the Silver King has no daemon because it's so easy to overlook. Everyone assumes that as Gold King Kokujouji must have something really majestic but actually he totally has a cute lop-eared bunny daemon and I will have no arguments on this point.

Okay but werewolf Yata and Kitsune Fushimi? Seems fittings in a supernatural AU
I’m just imagingthe arguments, like a lot of “stupid wolf” and “asshole fox”and Fushimi probably mocks Yata for being human unless there’s a fullmoon. Maybe Yata’s a werewolf who travels around a lot because he’sbeen persecuted before for his condition, like he had to leave homefor fear of harming his family and he’s never able to stay anywherevery long because once he goes wild it’s hard for him to controlhimself. When the full moon gets near he usually just tries to go offsomewhere remote and hope that no one gets hurt. One evening the fullmoon is near and Yata decides to stay the night at this old abandonedshrine, there’s not even a caretaker at the place anymore and hefigures that he should be safe from others and other people safe fromhim. Just as the transformation is starting the door of the shrinecreaks and Yata looks up in horror as a skinny kid about his agewalks in. Yata tries to get him to run away but the guy just staresat him flatly, expression never changing as Yata starts to cry out inpain and doubles over, nails turning into claws and fur covering hisbody. Soon he’s fully transformed, telling the guy staring at him torun away in this growling, guttural voice. The guy just stares at himfor a second with a vaguely irritated face, then hits his snout witha fan and mutters ‘Talk like a civilized person, idiot.’
All of a suddenYata feels totally in control of his body, staring blankly down athis clawed hands as he wonders what the heck is going on. The guy infront of him mutters about 'stupid wolves’ and turns to leave, Yatagrabs his arm and is like what the fuck did you do this is amazing. The guy looks back at him out of cold blue eyes as nine tails appeararound him and Yata realizes that this person is a kitsune. The guytries to walk away again but Yata follows, trying to talk to him andask his name, introducing himself and the guy finally tells Yata thathis name is Fushimi and that he has no interest in the plight ofstupid wolves who can’t even control themselves on their own. Yata’sstill amazed that Fushimi was able to give him control so easily andkeeps talking about how amazing Fushimi is. Fushimi mutters that he’snot amazing and it was just a simple trick. He keeps trying to getrid of Yata but Yata only wants to talk now, like imagine Fushimiturning into fox form and trying to run away but wolf Yata follows(oh oh and even though Fushimi’s human form is taller than normalYata his fox form is smaller than Yata’s wolf, Yata probably neverlets him forget it too). It turns out that Fushimi is the onlyremaining kitsune at the shrine. Maybe he’s stuck there too, like hisdad used to cause trouble in the nearby village and the villagersburned the shrine in order to drive out the evil spirits, then placeda ward at the door that keeps anyone left inside from leaving. SinceFushimi helped him Yata breaks the ward and proudly tells Fushimihe’s free to go, Fushimi clicks his tongue and just goes back insidethe shrine.
From then on Yatabuys an apartment near the shrine and keeps coming back there, likeafter his part time job every evening he shows up to just talk toFushimi. Initially Fushimi refuses to come out and Yata leaves likehamburgers and soda on an offering stone in front of the shrine, hecomes back the next day and all that’s left is the tomatoes that werepicked off the burger and a note on a leaf stating that Fushimidoesn’t like vegetables. Eventually Fushimi actually comes out forhis food, Yata probably sits there with the burger like if you don’tactually get out here Saruhiko I’m not feeding you anymore. On fullmoon nights Yata comes to the shrine and the two of them run aroundand play in the woods in their animal forms and slowly Fushimi startsto get more and more used to having Yata there with him. Then maybeone day Yata meets Totsuka, a changeling who’s part of a whole gangof supernatural creatures called Homra. Yata decides to go meet themand is totally amazed their leader Mikoto, and can’t understand whyFushimi seems so pissed off when Yata goes to see him later andstarts talking about how great Homra was and how they should bothjoin.
