Day 5: the ninja bet on who can get Lloyd the best gift

“I’m making him a new sword.” Kai boasted, crossing his arms confidently as the ninja discussed what they were getting Lloyd while he was being trained by Indigo in the courtyard.

    Nya scoffed with an eyeroll, smiling at her brother, “Yeah? Well I got him a bookshelf for all his comics.” She replied.

    “Why are we arguing over this? We all know I’m going to win.” Cole chuckled, crossing his arms.

    “Win? This isn’t a competition.” Lilliane huffed, scooching away from him with an eye roll, “Besides, you’re just going to get him candy again.

    “Statistically, it has been your gift to Lloyd for the past 5 years. So I would not be surprised if it happened again.” Zane added, shrugging his shoulders.

    ‘What if we bet on it?” Jay grinned, leaping to his feet and wrote down everyone’s names, “10 dollars from each of you says I have the best gift for Lloyd.”

The group broke into excited chattering, all boasting about how good their gifts were and how they'd surely win. As they did so, Lloyd and Indigo walked into the kitchen, grabbing waters from the fridge and leaving again, too busy talking about their sparring match to hear what was happening.

Hyperallergic: RZA and Mustafa Shaikh on the Asian Art that Inspired Their Clothing Line

SAN FRANCISCO — Last Thursday at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum, DJs were playing music as dancers were energetically spinning on the floor and flipping up into handstands. The event celebrated the fall line of 36 Chambers, the fashion label started by Robert Diggs, known as RZA, of the seminal hip-hop group the Wu-Tang Clan. The museum store displayed shirts, hats, and jackets, and people could customize their clothes with 36 Chambers labels. RZA went up on stage, not to rap, but to talk about fashion and Asian art with Jeff Chang, the executive director at Stanford’s Institute for Diversity in the Arts and author of books on race, culture, and hip hop.

Last year, RZA and the lead creative of 36 Chambers, Mustafa Shaikh, came to an exhibition at the museum titled Emperors’ Treasures, which showcased art once kept in royal courts. The two men were so inspired by the porcelain, scrolls, ceramics, calligraphy, and textiles they saw, that the display sparked them to create their fall collection, which they have named after the exhibition. The collection includes jackets with Buddhas and wallets, socks, and T-shirts adorned with seals like those used in calligraphy.

When I spoke with RZA ahead of his panel with Chang, he said they approached the museum themselves, wanting to present the collection where they were inspired to create it. And, if you’re a museum and RZA asks you about doing an event, what do you say? Yes, of course.

Emily Wilson: You’ve said you want 36 Chambers to tell a cohesive story. What is that?

Mustafa Shaikh: We came to the Asian Art Museum and we were inspired by the art. We got a lot of chi or energy from the museum and we wanted to give it back to the museum. What’s so cool is they do these Thursday night events, and they welcomed us in. And what’s really cool is that some people are going to be coming to the museum for the first time. People who would never have come to the Asian Art Museum are going to be here.

RZA: It’s something they’ve probably been exposed to but didn’t identify with. Whether they were exposed to it by being a fan of our music or through some great movie, our company helps ground it for them, I think.

EW: How were you first exposed to Asian art?

RZA: I was exposed to Asian art through movies. I guess I was always attracted to the motif of their costume design — the earthenware, you know, the dragon-shaped teapots, things like that. Of course martial art itself is an art, the different shapes of their swords and weapons, which have a distinctive look and use. For this line we pulled in a lot from China, different dynasties, but we also are very fascinated with the history and culture of Japan, Thailand, and the ancient history of Korea. I don’t mind sharing this with you — I am an official Shaolin disciple; I was ordained.

EW: What was it specifically about the exhibit Emperor’s Treasures that inspired you?

MS: Last year they had these Thursday night events. They were five dollars, and that’s a great way for people to come in at night and check it out. There was this girl I met at the Giants game and we exchanged numbers. She was also into clothing — she worked at a clothing company in San Francisco, and I asked her, “Do you want to check out the Asian Art Museum? I think this exhibit’s cool, and maybe it will give me some inspiration.” We were just starting 36 Chambers then. So we went and we’re talking about how these different pieces could be translated into clothing and what was cool about it. Two weeks later, a lot of those thoughts were in my head, and I was going to bring Bobby here to see if he vibed with it, and he did.

EW: Were there any pieces in particular that struck you?

RZA: We had 50 ideas right away. The first thing that inspired us was probably looking at the dragons. We wanted to use the mythical dragon — the Asian dragon, not the Western dragon with the wings. So we were looking for a dragon for our jacket, and we kept seeing different great items of art from different dynasties. What they mean by “Emperors’ Treasures” is these were things held by royalty. In the Qing dynasty, there was the Emperor Kangxi and his son Yongzheng, so you see their work coming from a youthful mind and then growing to be someone who appreciated the arts — I think that collection really sparked a nerve with us. Then there’s the Yuan dynasty, and once again the art was different with all the scrolls and the embroidery — we’re very big on embroidery, as well. It’s like, yo, to have this embroidered on the back of your shirt! So we wanted to find a way to have our clothing tell a story.

I’ve been to China, which is one reason he invited me to this exhibit. So in Buddhist scripture, in some teachings, there are no words. If you go to Shaolin, there’s maybe a wall that has a whole painting of events, and if you read the painting, there’s a story. So I was like, wow, they just told a whole story, imagine if that was embroidered on somebody’s sleeve. So we decided maybe to pull out the Heart Sutra and put it in our clothing.

MS: Here it is right here [shows black bomber jacket, with gold calligraphy on an indigo background in the lining, and with a Buddhist protector embroidered in gold on the back].

RZA: That’s the most important Buddhist teaching. It’s the shortest though, the shortest sutra.

MS: It’s a total of 40 or 45 lines.

RZA: We’re trying to find a way to combine art and fashion, to take some of our philosophy and put it in our fashion and go to the source which the Asian Art Museum was offering at the time through their exhibit.

MS: So one piece we saw was called the “Marvelous Scripture of the Lotus Sutra” from the Ming Dynasty, and we were immediately drawn to it. It’s gold painted on indigo paper — it’s actual gold. It just popped. That’s how we started. So this right here is the Heart Sutra in gold on indigo, and on the back here is one of the four Heavenly Protectors.

EW: What’s most exciting to you about this collection, now that it’s finished?

MS: I’m most excited that we’ve been working on this a year ago and that we finally get to present it here and there’s going to be people interacting with it tonight. I’m curious what people are going to think about the way we interpreted the works.

RZA: I echo his words. Seeing a thought come from conception to fruition is always exciting to me. This is like the birth of it right here, and now we get to share it in the place that inspired us. The other thing I’m really excited about, regardless of what anybody feels, is that we took this art, creativity, and culture and we have created vegan wallets and bags that have the potential to actually help. [Mustafa shows one, with Chinese seals found on calligraphy embossed on it.] You can see how beautiful the embossing is on these.

EW: What are you looking forward to talking with Jeff Chang about?

RZA: I love ancient art, I love Asian culture, I love what it stands for in the world, and how it helped me. I love how it’s always been an amalgamation of cultures around the world. In Asia you see it, and I’m excited to talk about that because I think there’s some importance to that with the climate in our country. Everybody’s grabbing ownership of something we all own. You know, there’s enough for all of us.

Day 9: Snowball Fight!

A rare snowy day atop of the mountain where the monastery sat, and all the ninja were out in the courtyard throwing snow at each other.

Indigo was helping Kai build a wall for them to hide behind since the snow kept melting in his hands.

"It's not fair…" He had said, pouting as he laid in a powdery pile, making it sizzle and steam under his touch, "I can't even make snow angels!"

Indigo simply laughed and laid beside him, "Well at least when we go back in you'll get all the cuddles since you're a human heater." She replied, smiling warmly at him, "Come on, I'll help you!"

Now they helped each other sculpt the snow into a compact shelter to hide behind as volleys of snowballs from the other team got thrown their way.

"Ow! Zane, stop freezing the snow!" Jay yelled from across the courtyard as Lilliane laughed.

"It is not my fault! I'm not even throwing that hard!" He called back, "you have Pixal and Minipix on your team."

"And you have Cole! What's your point here?" Nya shouted, throwing a Snowball full force at the mentioned ravenette, resulting in a string of curses and insults back at the master of water.

Lilliane laughed as she and Lloyd made a large pile of snowballs for their team, Lilliane blowing away any snowballs that got sent their way.

After a while the sun began to dip down to the horizon, and the group teased each other as they walked back inside to have dinner and make fun of one another once more as they ate.

Day 7: movie night

"I made hot chocolate!" Indigo announced with a smile, holding up the tray of mugs as she passed them out to the group, Arin shifting excitedly.

"It's our first Christmas with the ninja Sora!" He cheered, shaking the pink haired girl before taking hot chocolate, "Thanks Indie!"

Sora chuckled quietly, taking her own cup with a warm smile, "Sit and watch the movie, we can make Lloyd get up and get snacks."

Wyldfire broke into a fit of giggles as Llpyd groaned and got up to get the popcorn that was in the microwave. Indigo shook her head in amusement, passing out the rest of the hot chocolate to the people sitting around the TV under blankets.

"This is nice, one of our most long standing traditions finally starting up again since we all found each other..it's nice, I have missed you all." Zane smiled, pulling Jay and Lilliane into a side hug as they laughed a bit.

"We missed you too Zane." Lilliane smiled, scooting over to make room for Pixal as she finally arrived from fixing up the bounty once again.

"You all missed each other. Don't make it a competition." Jay grumbled, taking Zane's arm off of him in mild discomfort. He obviously still hadn't regained all of his memories yet. Not that any of the others cared much anymore, they had gotten him back to the monastery for Christmas thanks to Lilliane.

"Okay I have the popcorn." Lloyd shouted, jogging back into the room and sitting beside Indigo who passed him his hot chocolate and started the movie. Pixal tossed one of her ninja stars at the light switch so no one had to get up again until the end of the movie. Because this was family time, and nothing would get in the way of that ever again.

Day 2: Under the Mistletoe

Jaya-Lilliane would drag the two there and just leave without saying a word. Then Nya would be the one to kiss Jay because she gets inpatient.

Pixane-They'd be working on something with Jay. Jay would then pull out Mistletoe and hang it over them. Pixal notices and kisses Zane and goes back to work, leaving the other nindroid to literally malfunction.

Kailor- Lloyd would be in charge of this one, he'd drag Kai to the noodle house with the Mistletoe in his pocket. And when Kai went to go talk to Skylor, he'd climb on the counter and hang it over him. Kai would see it and act all cocky about it, only to start steaming when Skylor actually kisses him.

Necromancy(Indigo and Morro in an au where he joins the team)-Lloyd would also be responsible for this. Morro would be helping Indigo paint a mural on the ceiling, so they obviously saw it. Despite how confident Morro normally is, both him and Indigo were flustered and speechless, finally they both leaned in and kissed quickly before going back to work, not saying a word for the rest of the day.

Earthquake(Lilliane and Cole)-kai would simply drop it and run, Cole seeing it at some point earlier in the day and grabbing Lilliane as she walked by and dip kissing her, very wholesome, very cute. They have been together the longest after all(second longest if Pixane is first)

Day 1: Kai and Pixal decorate the outside of the monastery with christmas lights

“Please don’t kill him Pix.” Indigo sighed as Pixal and Kai prepared their supplies to decorate the outside of the monastery. It was the first of the month and the ninja knew that they would be doing Christmas the right way this year. Putting up lights and getting the Christmas tree on the first of the month! Kai had volunteered to help Pixal despite the probability that he’d give up half way through, but he had insisted that Zane would be more useful with looking for the perfect christmas tree.

“Affirmative. Although I cannot make any promises that he won’t do it himself.” Pixal replied with a thumbs up, handing the fire elemental the large box of multicolored lights that would ‘jazz up’ the monastery as Jay had said at breakfast that morning.

“Hey! I’m not that stupid!” Kai replied, furrowing his eyebrows angrily as Lilliane laughed from where she put on her coat, tossing Kai’s at his head.

“Well you’re stupid enough to not put on a coat before going outside in the cold.” She added, smiling at the two as she and Indigo walked off to get the rest of the group so they could leave.

“Come on Kai, let's get going. We want these lights to be done by nightfall when the others get back from getting the tree.” the nindroid instructed, sliding open the doors and grabbing the ladder that leaned against the wall next to her.

“With all these lights,” Kai added as they walked out into the crisp december morning, “The whole city will be able to see the monastery. Is that the goal here?” He fixed his grip on the large box, looking at the amount of lights that they had, then up at the roof and walls of the monastery, “Will this be enough for all the way up there?”

“That’s a separate box, these are just for the front entryway.” Pixal replied with a smug smile, glancing back at the shocked and horrified face that Kai had made.

"Fun. Let's get this over and done with then." Kai sighed. Huffing with a small frown as he placed down the box and put on his winter jacket. Bending down over the box and started untangling the lights.

Over the course of the day, the duo made their way around the outside walls of the monastery and the edges of the roofs protecting the walls from any sort of rain or snow. There were a few times Kai almost fell off the ladder when they switched every now and again, but he didn't quit. Mostly to spite the others.

By the time it was finally dark, the rest of the ninja had arrived back at the monastery. The lights weren't lit because Pixal was waiting for a reveal. Seeing them walk up the remaining stairs, Cole single handedly carried the tree on his shoulder up the stairs with Lilliane supporting the back with her wind to make sure he didn't fall over.

"Ready everyone?" Pixal called, smiling brightly as everyone let out various cheers. With a large grin, Kai plugged in the lights and the monastery glowed with a rainbow of colors. The cheering got louder as Jay laughed and danced around with Nya as Zane kissed Pixal's cheek.

"Looks good Pixal. Great job as always." He said, smiling warmly as the two walked inside.

Kai gasped in offense, "Hey! I helped!" He grumbled as Indigo laughed softly and patted his cheek as she passed.

"You did wonderfully Kai, come on, we're gonna find a place for the tree." The adopted daughter of Wu beckoned her to follow him as Lloyd passed them.

"Yeah, I think Sensei is finally going to let Jay and I make Starfarer ornaments this year!" The younger blonde grinned. Kai smiled, ruffling his hair and led the two inside to get warmed up and enjoy time with his family.

Day 3: First Christmas After the Merge

Empty and quiet halls of the monastery weren't what either of them had planned that year for Christmas, they hadn’t even had enough motivation to decorate or buy a tree like they normally did. They just made themselves hot chocolate and sat outside on the wall of the place they called home and stared down at the city.

“How many allies and friends do you think went missing other than the ninja?” Lloyd asked, sipping on the hot drink in the bitter cold air.

Indigo sighed, sipping her drink and looked up at the new moon in the sky, “I hope not many. Many of them reside in Ninjago city which didn’t seem to be too affected by the merging of the realms.” she replied, “Let’s try and make light of this heavy time. I painted a little something for you.”

“Oh Igo, you didn’t have to.” Lloyd denied, pushing away her hands as she held out the canvas.

His cousin only laughed with a warm smile, “I know you got me something so I returned the favor. I thought I’d paint you a mini version of the mural that was on the ceiling in your room. We can put it on the bounty if we ever find it.” She said, passing it to him as he smiled and hugged her.

“That so nice of you Indie..I didn’t get you something as special. But before the realms merged, Pixel helped me make you a cool new bladed fan since your current one is pretty old at this point.” Lloyd replied, his face lighting up as he climbed back down, taking the painting with him.

Indigo laughed softly, taking another sip of the warm liquid in her cup and looked up at the sky, “We’ll find them again, then we won’t be alone anymore.” She said, smiling at the stars that would never be the same again.

“I’m back!” Lloyd cheered as he climbed back up to the roof, passing her the fan and holding her cup. The fan was beautiful, it was a light amber color to match her element of healing, “We tried to make it look like your other one, just newer and one that works better!”

Indigo smiled softly as she flicked it open, the blades hidden within the fabric with a small button where her thumb normally rested. When she pressed it, the blades sprung out, it was elegant yet still just as deadly as the last.

"Oh Lloyd, it's perfect. I love it." She cooed, pulling the younger blond into a hug and kissed his forehead after brushing his hair out of the way, "Thank you."

"Merry Christmas, Indie." Lloyd mumbled, resting his head on her shoulder as they gazed up at the stars.

"Merry Christmas, Lloyd." Indigo answered, holding him close. It was a lonely Christmas, but the two still had each other.

And staring out at the new and unfamiliar landscape that lacked exploration, the cousins wished the other ninja and allies a Merry Christmas...wherever they were.

New ninjago au just dropped:

An au where the timeline gets reset and the ninja get corrupted by the villains that effected them most(includes my ocs)

I kinda got the idea from the rotten origin au cuz it's literally my favorite thing ever but that's beside the point

So basically the normal ninjago timeline happens like normal, dragons rising happens, etc.

But then the time twins use the merge to harness the energy to reset the timeline in hopes of making one where they win.

So everything goes back in time, they all don't know what happened and it's like the show starts over.

First 3 seasons go like normal, not much happens until season 4 where Kai gets the staff, it possesses him fully and he basically succums to the same fate as Chen and the others.

Everyone mourns Kai and Garmadon but the show goes on with season 5. Morro learns that Lilliane(my oc) is also a wind elemental and possesses her to win the preeminent's favor and the fight, so she unfortunately becomes more ghost than human by the end and goes bye bye as well.

Season 6 probably gets changed the most. Most of it is the same but to save Nya, Jay makes a wish that Nadakhan went away forever and his friends got returned. The wish gets granted and the catch to the wish was that Jay took Nadakhans place and got hit with the tiger widow venom instead, and gets wished into the teapot.

Loosing the walker siblings one after the other hurt the most, not much comedy came from the others as Nya and Cole both mourned their loved ones.

Season 7 goes about as normal but not sure how Nya will do it without Kai. More on that once I work it out lol

Season 8. We loose Lloyd. Harumi convinces him that he'd be better off siding with her and that Garmadon would respond better if Lloyd helped them. But like Harumi in season 9, he also gets crushed by the building.

Season 10 is the same, not much change there(just less people)

Season 11, Zane remains the ice emperor, that's about it.

Prime empire is significantly different since Jay isn't there, Nya would probably be the one to reson with Unagami.

Season 13, Most of the season is the same but when Cole goes to destroy the skull, he gets possessed by it instead of Vangelis.

Seabound, Nya turns into the ocean but instead of defeating wojira, she joins forces, but both get sent back to the depths of the ocean.

This leaves Indigo(my other oc) alone for Crystalized and Dragons rising. She finds Arin, Sora, and Wyldfire and they go about their days. Except Sora gets manipulated by LaRow or Beatrix and rejoins Imperium.

As for Arin and Wyldfire, they'll probably have their own main villains to face in the future so this'll change as the show progresses.

So after dragons rising Indigo is once again all alone, this time without even her father(wu) to keep her company.

But she has a dream about the original timeline and realizes that none of this was supposed to happen.

She seeks out the time twins and basically begs them to reset the timeline again. It takes some convincing(and returning of their powers) and they do so.

Timeline resets and Indigo goes through the show, freeing her friends from the control of the villains, trying to regain their memories as she does so.
