Obsidian Tutorial - Making & Using Templates

God I love templates. Consistent layouts of notes AND less typing? I’m a simple man with simple pleasures. There are a lot of things you can do with templates, and with certain plugins they can get quite complicated, but the basics are pretty straightforward.

Head to the settings menu and find core plugins. Toggle on the Templates plugin.

Under the core plugins section in the settings menu, head to ‘Templates’ to set up a few basics

The most important one is your template folder location - this is the place you’ll save all your templates. I have one in my Meta folder just called ‘Templates’ - I recommend making a similar, clearly named folder so it’s easy to find

The date and time format options are slightly more complicated additions: there are certain formats you can use in basic templates to automatically fill in date and time, and this is where you set how you want that format to look. Don’t worry about it too much - you’re safe to leave it as the default if you want.

Once you have your folder location set up, you can start making templates!

A simple example might be a character profile: create a new note, and lay out the text the way you’d like it to look, but without any specific details in.

Make sure the note is in your template folder

You can now use that note as a template! You can insert it into a new note either by using the command palette and the ‘insert template’ command, or you can assign a hotkey (I use Ctrl+T) and use that

Congratulations, you have now saved yourself approximately a million years of repetitive typing, and the stress of remembering how you want to lay out character profiles, journals, blog posts, and any number of other things

Every time I think that the Fire Emblem Fandom Wiki couldn't get any worse, it does something new to piss me off and make me pray for the day the NIWA Fire Emblem Wiki finally takes over as the dominant wiki (which is very unlikely given its lack of polish).

Today, I needed to look at the list of weapons in Three Houses for a project I'm working on. I start copying down all of the basic swords - that is, no Relic weapons, no Sacred weapons, and no stuff that was basically just in Three Houses. I don't know what exactly brought my eye to the Training Sword, but it just happened anyways. I hover over the link and see it leads to the page for the Trainer from Path of Radiance instead (that one sword Ike wields in the tutorials. The one with 150 Hit).

"Huh. That's strange," I think. Those really aren't similar swords at all. Well, whatever. I click the link, curious to compare the two swords. Maybe there was something I missed.

Instead, I end up at the page for one of Engage's DLC classes. I remember seeing the girl with the obnoxious face lattice on there, but not really much else. At the top of the page, in plain text, even above the infobox saying this article is missing a Japanese name, is a line that simply reads, "Not to be confused with the Training Sword, called a Trainer in Path of Radiance."

And that's when it hits me. They put the Three Houses Training Sword's data on the page for the Trainer, then moved the PoR Trainer's data over to the Three Houses Training Sword's page when Engage's final DLC came out. Instead of making a disambiguation page between the Trainer (class) and Trainer (sword), they just decided to lump two entirely unrelated swords together on one page. I fix the error on the list page and try to move on.

It takes me a few more minutes to realize that, if that link was incorrect, then every single link that directs to the PoR Trainer is probably also incorrect. Since I run my own private wiki I know a bit about how they work, so I pull up the Special:WhatLinksHere page for the Trainer class.

And to my horror, it comes up with 439 pages all linking back to it.

I quickly realize that most of these are coming from the Classnav box at the bottom of every class page, which links to every single other class in not only Fire Emblem, but also in... whatever the hell Kaga's been doing since the early 2000s. The idea that even one of those linked pages was actually attempting to link to the PoR Trainer was enough to get me to scan through the entire list, checking any page that I knew for a fact wasn't a class. I did actually end up finding one hit, on the "List of E rank weapons" page, which I promptly corrected.

While I was on that page, I figured that I might as well check out the Practice/Training Axe too. So I click it... and quickly see that the 3H Training Axe is nowhere to be seen on this page. So they combined the PoR Trainer and the 3H Training Sword for having vaguely similar names and intents, but not the Practice Axe and Training Axe, which would make just as much sense as combining the other two.

All of this is to say that, while the NIWA Fire Emblem Wiki lacks some visual polish, the Fandom wiki is managed in a way I can only describe as completely incompetent. And it's hardly the worst I've seen, or even corrected, from them.

Just a quick update with how the Umatani Miraheze wiki's doing.

Most of the main characters have pages now, but very bare bones.

I made an infobox character template from scratch today, and implemented it (partially) on Yumoto's page. Still working on formatting the CSS and making it so sections disappear if nothing's filled in.

The default box (not visible on the template page anymore because of how it's set up, but the code's still there) uses Albert Einstein cause that's what the tutorial had.

I made the default caption the meme:

"Umatani anime is amazing," I say. The auditorium boos. "She's right," a voice says from the back. It's none other than Albert Einstein.

No pictures or anything uploaded to the site yet, so Yumoto's infobox only has text so far. If you want to upload anything, please make sure it doesn't break Miraheze's TOS. The part about copyright is a little confusing to me.

Hi! Thanks so much for asking! This is a long post, so get ready!

To make a page, you can either click the new page button or a red link

Next, you’ll enter the name of the page. Note: If you clicked a red link, the name will already be entered for you.

You’ll be taken to a blank page. While it’s best to work in Source Mode, as a beginner it will be easier for you to use the Visual Editor, which is what will pop up. (note that once the code gets too complex on a page, the visual editor won’t work) The first thing we’ll want to add is a template. Click the “insert” button to view the menu, then click “templates.”

We want to add the WIP Template. This will add a cute little picture and box that lets people know that the page is a work in progress. It also puts the WIP category on it so that it’s easier to find. If you were editing in source mode, all you would have to write is {{WIP}}.

No need to enter anything here. It’s all set up for you.

Now that you have the WIP put in there, you can add an infobox. The infobox makes key information easy to find. The catch is, sometimes entries in it involve a bit of coding. Click insert>infobox. This is what will open.

(Note: I had to take a screenshot of the text above because some of the code wasn’t showing. I completely overlooked that typo and now Grammarly has it underlined in red to shame me for perpetuity.)

Since I already had the picture uploaded, all I had to do was search for it. But! I should have given it a better name when uploading it so that when I searched for “south sea monsters” it would pop up. A better file name would have been South_Sea_Monsters.png

I filled out everything I know here, so it’s time to click Apply Changes again.

Our page is starting to look pretty!

It’s good to check in there to learn how the coding works. Some things can only be done with the source editor and with coding, like anime and manga tabs for the infobox pictures. Next, we add the main text.

Bolding and creating headlines can be done using the formatting bar like you would in a word processor. Adding sources is easy too. With your cursor at the end of the relevant sentence, click Insert>Reference

You’ll get a little box that looks like this:

When adding sources, it’s important to be sure to note if you’re referring to AoS or someone will look in the main series and they won’t find what they’re looking for! The chapter (Night) is the most important information to include, but please include the page and volume information if you have it.

Now the page is set up!

This is what it looks like in the Source Editor. As you can see, the coding is pretty easy to pick up.

It can be a good idea to check similar pages to see what headings and formats they have. Now, you have the bare bones of a page! At this point, it’s a good idea to save. You can always go back and edit some more!

Leaving a summary is nice because it lets others know what you changed.

That’s a nice page! But, if you’re like me, you forgot something…

The categories! As I said earlier, the WIP category makes it easy to find pages that need work, but it can also help keep the wiki organized in other ways. You’ll find the Add category button at the bottom of the page. You can check similar pages to see what kinds of categories they have, but in this case, we haven’t made any similar pages. I’m going to put them in the Kingdom of Sindria category because they’re common there. If I’m messing up, I suppose someone can always fix it later ^^; Mistakes aren’t a big deal.

Go ahead and click that save button! That was a lot of work! Do you have to do all that?

Camtasia (/kæmˈteɪʒə/; formerly Camtasia Studio) is a software suite, created and published by TechSmith, for creating video tutorials and presentations directly via screencast, or via a direct recording plug-in to Microsoft PowerPoint. Audio or other multimedia recordings may be recorded at the same time or added separately from another source.

Major components[edit]

Camtasia consists of two major components:

Camtasia Recorder - a separate tool for capturing screen audio and video

Camtasia editor - the component for which the entire product is named, which is now a multimedia authoring tool with a 'timeline' interface for managing multiple clips in a stacked track form.

Camtasia Recorder[edit]

In Camtasia Recorder, users can start and stop recording with a hotkey combination at any time, at which point the recording can be halted and Camtasia Recorder can render the input that has been captured into a CAMREC format. The CAMREC file can be saved to disk or directly imported into the Camtasia component for editing. Camtasia Recorder allows audio recording while screen-capturing is in progress, so the presenter can capture live narration during a demonstration or presentation. Camtasia also supports dubbing in other audio tracks or voiceover during post-capture editing. Users may also download an add-in for Microsoft Power Point that will allow them to initiate recording of a presentation from within Power Point itself.

In Camtasia editor, multimedia objects of various formats can be imported into the clip library and arrange them in time order and stacked tracks using the timeline form of user controls. Overlays of various types may be added, including user-defined settings, such as when and how to display the cursor and pan-and-zoom effects such as the Ken Burns effect.

Post-production[edit]

After capturing a presentation in the Camtasia Recorder, the Camtasia component can be used to modify audio and video displayed as tracks by using the timeline control and object library interface with an integrated preview window. The image in the infobox to the right is a screen capture of the timeline interface. In addition, Camtasia allows automatic captions (speech-to-text), voice overlay for the presenter or editor, as well as the ability to add sound effects in various formats.

Rendering and deployment[edit]

The Camtasia program allows import of various types of multimedia video and audio files including MP4, MP3, WMV, WMA, AVI, WAV and other formats into the Camtasia proprietary CAMREC format, which is readable by Camtasia. The CAMREC format is a single container for various multimedia objects including video clips, still images, document screen shots and special effect containers. The created video can be exported to common video formats including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV, AVI, and Adobe Flash.

Camtasia's shortcomings noted in the PC World review of January 17, 2013 and CNET review of June 19, 2012 are as follows:

Rotation of objects is applied via a dialog rather than interactively, though many lower-priced video editors do provide interactive rotation and manipulation of objects such as text and video frames

Recording live from a DV camera is not supported

Still potentially overwhelming for the introductory user, tempered by the tutorial material available. NOTE the V8 release is a complete rewrite so much of the prior tutorial material written for the popular Camtasia v6 and v7 software for Microsoft Windows is not usable with this release.

Audio handling has minimal capabilities and no integration with other packages compared to some competitors in this price range

Lacks any video-clip manipulation or integration with other packages that have such capabilities

In 2005, PC World mentioned that Camtasia is 'powerful'.[4]
