POOOOT!
"ALRIGHT! NEXT ONE!"
The Coach blew his whistle, and off goes another successful victim--applicant! Gomennasai for that error. But yes, we are all applicants here aren't we?
The next one of us is a delightful little chap who was personally invited to join us in Dorm Desire Academy. Average build, you can tell since he's stripped naked aside from the privates which are covered by swimming trunks. He should be getting rid of them soon anyway.
By the way, you could tell that he's one of those anime-obsessed teenagers if you pay a visit to his room, devoted to reading tons of manga and playing many kinds of anime-based games. Well, you could tell that too if you knew the man personally. I mean, that's why I invited him after all.
Boy, don't you know how these types just absolutely love to imagine being fit, more muscular versions of themselves. Charismatic, shouting and boasting about in their teenage-slang. Cheerful and popular, basically total jocks. I mean! Just look at how great they turned out back in the Academy!
No dumbing down in case you guys are wondering, just pushing aside and reorganizing their talents in academics and pushing it all into sports and leadersip. Though its really case by case scenario if you are going into detail.
But yes, time to start narrating properly again. Let's call the chap "Baikoha" for now.
"WHERE are your GOGGLES?!" The coach shouted."Don't you know that all new students are required to wear their FULL-SET of equipment before the lesson?"
Baikoha winced, his hands fumbling about in his trunks. Attempting to find the branded pair of swim-gear that's tucked in. "Why did I sign up for swimming lessons again?" He thought. Noting that this week is "Sports Week" at campus, a tri-monthly Dorm Desire event in which its a mandatory for new students to take part in one sporting event each time in the year.
He took out the swimming goggles, light blue lens with rubberized ocean colored sides. It was quite similar to the rest of the goggles of the other participants in line. Although, like what the mini-swimmer's package that was sent to me has said. It's of a completely different branding.
"Congratulations, you've obtained one of the two limited edition "Marlon & Brawly" branded goggles." It said, and judging by the rest of the swimmers' mass produced "Dorm Desire branded" goggles. It looks like him and one other guy are the lucky ones for this semester.
Well, you would be if the coach wasn't pissed off at you.
He quickly wore the eye-wear, a loud "Click" sound signifying the goggles being attached to my face. The surroundings gained a dark-blueish tone, as the chap stared at the deep blue open-aired swimming pool, which seems to be remodeled and designed like the ocean itself.
Stepping forward...little by little. Nervous to mention to the coach that he's "not particularly sure how to swim"..., especially considering that this side of the pool only seem to be really deep. And that's only what it seems! Imagine how deep it actually is!
"So you're one of those newbies huh? The coach spoke,uh ohWell once this week is over, I'll have you diving like a professional!" He gave a really fierce-looking grin, as he raised his right arm and--
"SURFS UP!" SLAP! SPLASH!
The helpless chap is slammed into the pool, water flows and culminates around the branded goggles. Bubbles bubbling about.
"WhaBLURRBBBLEGHHHH!"
Bubbles beam towards the corners of the student's lips.Streaming past the edges of his tongue, the uvula, and into the numerous systems in his body. Body completely paralyzed, limp and light. But alive as ever, with red hot blood pumping to overcome the oxygen deficit in the lung.
Triggering the whole body, as the bubbles work inward. Down the legs, through the arms, chest, and most importantly the head. All of it beginning to realign themselves into a proper swimmer's form. New info being slowly bubbled into his thoughts.
The first were the arms. Starting strongly as they slowly align into position, arms bulking and tanning themselves deeply with the illumination of the sun. Mixed with the cool richness of the minerals in the pool, forming a light chocolate collagen-rich tan showing confidently on his swimmer-ised, nimble and exposed biceps.
Next were the chest. Pecs pumping out like a heart, chest firm, proudly synchronized with the darkening skin tone from each arm. Blood bubbling into the veins, lungs being completely filled with air bubbles, muscles aching for some action. His body stings up!
Arms moving further and wider, involuntary to the new brain sensors as they spread wide! Performing a powerful backstroke underwater, solidifying those strong back muscles that complement the skill and strength of the swimmer. Broad shoulders, with abs glistening with a healthy Tan like the rest of his upper torso.
Legs giving a mighty dolphin kick, popping out those glutes as they form a proud bubble butt, shining out underneath the new trunks growing beneath. Tan line forming just around the waist. Bottom as clear and white as the gentle milky river.
Bubbles leave his pores via the lower portion, releasing the laziness, unenthusiasm, and stress. Legs marloning and Shoot!ing past the unathletic height. The Negative energy being destroyed and bursting all over his feet as two pair of plain-sticky dark blue sandals form over his well-developed feet.
His mouth forms a steady grin, unattractive thoughts seeping out of his new darkened coat, trunks expanding and wet-suiting down his tall legs, brightening into a positive light blue with three thick paler strips down each thigh. Pairs of fins youthfully pop by at the ends of each leg. Completing his favourite wet-suit.
The light brownish hue covers his entire neck and face. His eyebrows and hair dye themselves a sharpedo blue, angular jaw and prominent cheekbones showing off the cheeriness of the man. The man who enjoys being in the water.
"Study-nerd's essays, homework, and watching anime are total bummer dude!" His vocal cords cooled, laced with Surfer lingo. * "Radical thoughts like surfing, swimming and marine biology are totally in."* Hair styling itself into a fin of a sharpedo, with some white dotted sparkles spotted near the front.
"Yo, what's an anime? ...Man, for some reason. I feel like I was in one!"
The man thought, furrowing his well-shaped eyebrows before shrugging off almost instantly. The last bits of the negative bubbles leaving through his mouth, steady and high capacity lungs lay deep in his body. As the soothing wave carries him up the depth of the pool, shooting up as it transforms into a tidal wave and--
"SPLASHHHHHHHHHH!"
The new man rose to the surface.
Flipping up his special goggles and allowing the light blue aura of the pool's surface to diminish any doubt he once ever had. Eyes revealing to be a calm, and a refreshing blue, with the confidence and fierceness of an all time swim-goer.
Embracing and relaxing in his new identity, as Marlon, Former Gym Leader of Humilau City's Gym and now the Captain of The University's Water Sports Group. A Carefree Surfer Jock who loves nothing more than being in the water.
"Yo! Brawly! Sup!" Marlon raised his hand. HI-FIVE "Hey Man! Totally drenched me over here! Haha!" He laughed.
The two of them were inseparable, fierce competitors and the greatest of friends back when they met in orientation. Recognizing the other Gym Leader back when they were roomies. And having being given their own special goggles together by the higher-ups as a reward for being one of the best pairs in their category. The Ocean.
With their knowledge of the ocean, surfing as well as a healthy match of Pokemon battles and tons of working out. With Marlon and Brawly taking the lead in The school's Swimming/Water Polo and Dynamic Surfers Teams respectively, The Captains of the University's Water Sports Group were unstoppable together.
"Dude! Race you to the top of the diving board." Marlon swam. "Oh yeah? Well I'm gonna wipe you down man!" Brawly jumped in and swam right after him.
The two of them made their way to the diving board.
"Hey Man! Watch this--I'm gonna make--!"
"A Bigger Splash Than The Sea!"
SPLASH!

About us! James is the founder and principal instructor of the Goliath Historical Fencing Academy. He began fencing in 2009, after being inspired by the film Reclaiming The Blade. At Goliath, he instructs several weapons systems including longsword, rapier, dagger, unarmed combat, quarterstaff and halberd. Ted Lasso Season 2: Hannah Waddingham on Embracing Rebecca’s Boss Potential
https://ift.tt/3lEy9a6
This article contains spoilers for Ted Lasso season 2 episode 3.
AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) was the closest thing that the otherwise cheerful Ted Lasso had to a villain in the beginning.
Following a tough divorce from the awful Rupert Mannion (Anthony Head), Rebecca took it upon herself to hurt her ex in the cruelest way she could imagine: by destroying his beloved football team. As the new sole owner of Richmond, Rebecca brought in American college football coach Ted Lasso to torpedo the team’s chances of success. In that regard, she was actually quite successful as the club found itself relegated to the lower Championship level. It didn’t take long, however, for the show to reveal that Rebecca isn’t nearly the villain that we, or she, thinks she is.
Following Rebecca’s redemption in season 1, the character enters into season 2 as a firm part of the team. According to the actress who plays her, that required some adjustments.
“I genuinely found it slightly unnerving,” Waddingham says. “I was like ‘Where’s my attrition? Where’s the attrition?’ There’s no attrition with Ted. There’s no attrition with Higgins. Rupert hasn’t rocked up. It made me feel quite discombobulated, but that’s good, because that’s where she should be.”
Though the show bears his name, Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) is currently not one of its most dynamic characters. Despite his recent divorce and brush with panic attacks, Ted is a consistent, seemingly self-actualized presence…at least until Dr. Sharon (Sarah Niles) breaks through his outer shell. Until Ted realizes he needs to change though, it’s up to the show’s other characters to seek self-improvement. And thus far, no character’s journey has been as turbulent or interesting as Rebecca’s.
Season 1 disassembled Rebecca Welton down to the brakepads and now season 2 allows her to consider what kind of boss and what kind of person she intends to be.
“She shouldn’t really know how to function yet. And I was really pleased to see that she’s not all together sorted out,” Waddingham says. “That’s a long time to have been with somebody – for 13, 14 years. Even if it was wrong and toxic, you’re just used to that. But she’s found a new family.”
Rebecca takes her biggest step forward towards a found family yet in episode 3 “Do the Right-est Thing.” This half-hour finds Rebecca catching up with her old friend Flo Collins a.k.a. Sassy (Ellie Taylor). While Sassy is speaking at a conference in Brighton, Rebecca is charged with entertaining Sassy’s teenage daughter Nora for the night.

Rebecca hasn’t spent time with Nora since she was a child six years ago (now she’s “one errant cobblestone away from her first period,” Sassy notes). As such, Nora operates like a mirror set up on a planet six lightyears away, reflecting back to Rebecca what she used to be. And what she used to be is not particularly good with children. Rebecca strikes out trying to take Nora out for a tea date and then again outside of a doll shop.
Thankfully, that’s when Rebecca runs into the Great Roy Kent who has some great advice for her for the second time in three episodes. Kids don’t want to be coddled or entertained, Roy says. They just want your time. They want to be where you are and do what you do. So Rebecca invites Nora to work.
“I’ve always wanted to see what it’s like to own a football club,” Nora says.
“Really? Since when?” Rebecca asks.
“Since you started running one.”
Once Rebecca is back in her element as boss, her relationship with Nora flourishes. Nora is even by her side as Rebecca navigates the most stressful aspect of her AFC Richmond ownership tenure yet. When Nigerian defender Sam Obisanya no longer wants to associate himself with the club’s corrupt sponsor Dubai Air, the powers-that-be at Dubai Air instruct Rebecca to cut him. Of course, she will be doing no such thing. Rebecca composes a sternly-worded email, ignoring all of Nora’s profane suggestions save for the last – signing the email as “Boss Ass Bitch.”
While the terms “boss” and/or “ass” and/or “bitch” may have been applicable to Rebecca in less charitable contexts in season 1, season 2 finds her really blossoming into the Boss Ass Bitch that her friends, family, and team need.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
“Isn’t that great? Don’t you just love it when they’re writing the letter on the bed and Nora doesn’t expect her to write Boss Ass Bitch?” Waddingham says. (EDITOR’S NOTE: Yes, we do like it.) “I just think it’s so charming. And I got to play the fact that Rebecca is 100% the boss of that team, and is looking after her boys, and at the same time, showing her young ingenue how to hold herself as a woman in sport and in business.”
In Ted Lasso’s world, it’s good to be the boss. If only because it means another opportunity to help.
Ted Lasso season 2 premieres new episodes every Friday on Apple TV+.

Cuffing Language
*Daveed Diggs x Reader
*Summary: Daveed and Reader have known each other since high school and he invites her to a clipping. concert in Oakland.
*Warnings: Alcohol, swearing. Let me know if I missed anything.
*A/N: This was supposed to be posted back in October when I went to the clipping. show in Oakland but oops.
Outfit
**********
When you first met Daveed Diggs, you were the coaches’ assistant for your high school track team. You were a junior looking to beef up your college applications, and you knew having something to do with sports would make you look at least a little bit impressive, even if you weren’t actually on the team. You tended to just fetch things the team needed, or note down things the coaches were supposed to but didn’t want to. It was pretty easy, and you actually kind of had fun with your job.
You were doing your thing, passing out water bottles to the runners, when you first interacted with him. Even though a lot of the runners didn’t really know you personally, they at least recognized you. “Hey, Diggs, heads up,” you called out to him. He turned, and you tossed the water bottle to him.
“Thanks,” he said, drawing it out just enough so you knew he was searching for your name.
“(Y/n),” you provided.
“(Y/n),” he repeated. “I’d introduce myself, but you already know my name.”
“Yup, it comes with the job. Impressive times, by the way.”
“Thanks. You’re the coaching assistant, right?” You nodded, wanting to keep this conversation going (you couldn’t help it, he was incredibly cute), but then the assistant coach yelled for you to pass out the waters before the team had to get back to practice.
“Work calls,” you explained with a sheepish smile, picking up the box of water bottles.
“We could talk after practice, if you want,” Daveed immediately offered, ducking his head with a shy smile as he waited for your response. In any other situation, you’d say he’d offered it a bit too quickly, but you didn’t want to get your hopes up like that.
“Yeah, that’d be nice.” With that, you went back to work before the assistant coach could yell at you again. You didn’t want to overthink things too much; after all, you barely knew the guy. Surely there were completely innocent reasons for him wanting to talk to you a bit after practice. You were the coaches’ assistant, so he probably just reasoned that you’d be around practice a lot so he might as well get on your good side.
Once practice was over and you’d done all the clean up that the coach asked you to, you found Daveed waiting for you on the bleachers. Adjusting your backpack strap over your shoulder, you walked up to him with a smile. Even if it wasn’t a romantic interest, you knew you’d enjoy spending time with him either way.
**********
The two of you ended up clicking instantly. You weren’t necessarily sure if it was in the romantic way or just in a friend way, but you always had a great time when you hung out. The two of you were almost inseparable for the rest of his senior year, but eventually the time came for him to head off to college. You were torn on his last day: you were insanely proud of him for going to Brown, but you were going to miss him more than you’d care to admit. With a promise to stay in touch, the two of you parted ways for the first time.
Fast forward all these years, and you’d actually kept that promise. While you stayed in the Bay for college and work, you watched as Daveed did his own thing all over the country. Whenever he came back to Oakland, you’d drop whatever to hang out with him, and he did the same if you happened to be wherever he was at the moment. It was kind of crazy how you were actually able to keep in touch and stay friends for all these years; there were even friendships you had from college that didn’t keep in touch as well as Daveed.
When Daveed told you clipping. was doing shows again and they were having one in Oakland, you made sure you got the day of and the next day off. You wanted to utilize the time you had with him, especially since you didn’t know when you’d see him next. You absolutely loved the fact that he was successful, and you were insanely proud of him, but sometimes you just missed having your friend around. You’d never complain about it, especially not to Daveed, it was just something you’d dealt with for years.
When the day came, you couldn’t help the excitement that engulfed you. You danced around your apartment, blasting clipping. on the speakers as you went about the process. You’d already had your outfit picked out - with a backup just in case - for days, but as you were getting dressed you couldn’t help but second guess what you wanted to wear. After an hour of going through that mess, you finally decided to just wear the first outfit you’d picked out - a velvet slip dress and black thigh-high boots, with a black leather jacket in case you all decided to go out after the show. Once you dealt with that entire mess, you still had to put on your makeup and style your hair.
A quick Lyft ride over to the venue later and you found yourself on the upper balcony with a drink in hand, looking down over the stage. You recognized a few of Daveed’s other friends around the balcony, but you didn’t really know them well enough to hang out with them. You watched the DJ set, enjoying watching the DJ go through his box of records. You were bobbing along with the music when you heard a familiar voice behind you. “Am I going crazy or did (y/n) finally get a few days off work to come hang?”
When you turned, you couldn’t help your wide smile. Standing there, drink in his hand, was Daveed’s best friend, Rafa. Finally, someone you could hang out with during the show. “Rafa! Shit dude, how long has it been?” You said, immediately walking up and wrapping him in a hug as well as you could without spilling either of your drinks.
“Does Diggs know you came out?” Rafa asked, releasing you from the hug. Rafa had been just as busy as Daveed, and you missed hanging out with him just as much. When it was you and the boys, you always had a ton of fun just screwing around and doing whatever. The last time you had the opportunity to just hang out as a group was nearly a year ago.
“Of course, man, who do you think invited me?” you joked. “Speaking of Diggs, have you seen him yet?”
“Yeah, he’s doing his rounds.” With that, Rafa took your hand to drag you to, you assumed, wherever Daveed was. Sure enough, you spotted Daveed over the crowd. He had that bright smile that you always loved, a second later throwing his head back in laughter at whatever the people talking to him just said. You could feel the little goofy smile growing on your face at the sight of him, and Rafa didn’t miss it. “You still got that little crush on Diggs?”
“Man, shut up,” you laughed.
“I’ll take that as a yes then,” Rafa teased but dropped the subject. You and Rafa stood off to the side for a bit, waiting for Diggs to finish his conversation. The two of you caught up a bit, talking about your respective work and personal lives. You insisted Rafa should let you watch his dog when he needed a sitter, but for some reason Rafa wasn’t down for it. While you were having this little playful argument, Daveed spotted the two of you. He excused himself from his conversation, making a beeline towards his two best friends.
Before you could argue further about Rafa letting you dogsit Mia, you were lifted off your feet and spun around in a hug. “Daveed, put me down!” you laughed, trying not to get too lost in the feel of being in his arms. It’d really been too long since the last time you’d seen him.
“(Y/n)! Look at you! Wow, babe, you look amazing,” Daveed said when he put you down, holding your hand to twirl you once.
“Babe?” you questioned his word choice with a raised brow. You could immediately see him get a bit shy, looking down and then focusing his attention on Rafa.
“I heard you say it too, Diggs,” Rafa decided to jump in on the teasing. You could have sworn you heard Daveed swear lightly under his breath. He was cornered.
“You know, that’s some cuffing language right there,” you added.
“Is it?” Daveed asked, replacing his shy smile with a small smirk. He figured he couldn’t win arguing he hadn’t called you babe, but he could bring you down that road with him. You rolled your eyes, trying to ignore the heat rushing to your face at his not-so-subtle flirtation. “You look really nice, (y/n). I mean it.”
“Thanks, Diggs, you don’t look too bad yourself.” You ducked your head, trying to avoid seeing whatever his reaction would be. Rafa looked between the two of you before clearing his throat, drawing the attention back to him.
“So are y’all finally gonna get together or what?” Rafa asked bluntly. Immediately you and Daveed started stuttering out excuses and denials, much to Rafa’s pleasure. It wasn’t until you saw the wicked smirk on Rafael’s face that you finally realized he was just fucking with you guys. Once the realization hit you, you couldn’t help but throw up your middle finger in his direction, which he of course found hilarious.
“So, plots?” You asked, trying to change the topic. You really didn’t need Rafael spilling about the crush you’d had on Diggs since high school, even though you were pretty sure you didn’t do that good of a job of hiding it. If you guys started talking about plans for after the concert, you were sure you’d be able to get Rafael to stop talking about the whole thing. Well, for now at least.
“I vote we do drinks at (y/n)’s place,” Daveed immediately offered.
“Sounds good to me,” Rafael agreed.
“Wait, excuse me?” You asked, taken off guard by the offering of your place.
“Hey, you asked for plots, we gave them,” Daveed laughed. “Two out of three, we’re doing drinks at your place.”
“We’re gonna have to stop somewhere then, all I have at my place is like two beers and a bottle of wine,” you complained. Your complaints were only half-hearted; you were going to agree to whatever plans they suggested, even though you didn’t have anything in your place to really have a night of drinking. Sure, everyone going to your place wasn’t ideal, but you’d deal with it to be able to hang out with your friends again.
“I’ll cover the alcohol then,” Rafael offered. “We can stop by my place, I know I have some stuff.”
“Why don’t we just go to your place then?”
“No, we already agreed on your place,” Daveed said, shaking his finger. Before anything else could be said, someone came up to Daveed and tapped him on the shoulder before whispering something to him. You could see the flash of worry cross Daveed’s face, and you and Rafael shared a look. The person left your group, and you gave Daveed a questioning look. “One of the openers got sick, so I need to go with the guys to see what we’re gonna do about it.”
“Shit, yeah, go deal with that. Just find us after the show,” you told him.
“Yeah, man, I’ll keep an eye on (y/n),” Rafael joked, throwing an arm around your shoulders. You missed the look that crossed Daveed’s face when he did that, but Rafa didn’t. Once again Rafa had that wicked smile on his face, but this time you had no idea why. Before you could question it, Daveed already began making his way to wherever the openers were at.
**********
As the night continued, you really enjoyed yourself. The DJ ended up playing a double set while Daveed and them tried to figure out what to do, but you liked having the chance to really catch up with Rafa while everything was going on. The second clipping. was on the stage, though, your attention was completely on them. You loved watching Daveed perform: the way the normally shy man was completely in his element made you feel something you couldn’t quite name. It was a mixture of immense pride and attraction, but you couldn’t say that last part out loud.
When the show finally finished, it was already nearing midnight. You silently praised your past self for taking the next day off too, knowing that if you hadn’t, you would’ve had to call in sick instead. With the way the three of you got when you were together, you weren’t expecting to go to sleep until the sun was up. You and Rafa chilled by the bar while Diggs did his final rounds, talking to some fans and other people he knew, talking about the plans for the rest of the night. As far as the two of you were concerned, you’d get some food, get the booze from Rafa’s place, and then head back to your place to really catch up.
As soon as Daveed was done, he herded you and Rafa into the hired car they had for him. You teased him about having that ‘movie money’ now, being too good for that ride share and public transport lifestyle you lived. He took it all in stride, even when Rafa jumped in like he wasn’t getting that Nickelodeon money. The three of you actually followed the plan, getting pizza from a local place and then picking up the alcohol. When Rafa ran out to get the liquor, you and Daveed sat in the car, alone for the first time all night. “You know I’m just teasing, right?” You asked, suddenly feeling bad about your money jokes.
“Yeah, (y/n), I know. So, what’s new in your life? You got a little boyfriend now or something exciting?” Daveed asked, redirecting the conversation.
“Nah, work keeps me busy these days. I’m trying to convince Rafa to let me dog sit Mia and that’s the most exciting thing going on now.” You laughed, though you couldn’t help but internally question Diggs choice of conversation. “How about you? Don’t act like I don’t see you running around with that one girl on your Instagram. What’s going on there?”
You didn’t mean to make it sound accusatory, but it sure came out that way. It was like you were accusing him of running around behind your back, even if you meant for it to be a joke. You knew exactly who ‘that one girl’ was, but you didn’t want to make it seem too obvious you were keeping tabs on him. As far as you knew, they were together but not publicly. It wasn’t like you saw Diggs often enough to actually meet his girlfriend if they weren’t public. You were brought out of your thoughts when Daveed laughed. It wasn’t that full-bodied laughter that you loved, rather a smaller, more nervous one. “Yeah, nah, that’s Emmy. She’s a good friend, but I don’t really see her like that.”
You nodded, not sure where to go with the conversation from here. While you and Daveed had a friendship where comfortable silences happened, this wasn’t one of them. You never really found yourself at a complete loss for words before. Before the quiet could turn unbearable, it was broken by the sound of Rafa smacking his hand on the roof of the car. “Diggs, unlock this shit! It’s cold out here!”
From Rafa’s, the three of you headed back to your place. As soon as you were through the door, you opened the pizza box Daveed was carrying and stole a slice, ignoring the protests from the guys.
The night continued about as chill as you could be hanging out with your friends. The three of you caught up, even though it was more like you were catching up with what was going on in Daveed and Rafa’s lives than they were with each other. As you all told stories, you knew your voices were getting louder until it reached the point of everyone trying to talk over one another. It wasn’t like anyone was arguing or anything - you all just got loud when you were together, and adding in drinks didn’t help make the situation any quieter.
It was around three in the morning when you all decided to call it a night. Out of the three of you, you were definitely doing the best. While you tried to figure out what to do to get the boys home, you looked over at Daveed and Rafa on the couch. Diggs looked like he was all of three seconds away from passing out where he sat, while Rafa was talking to him, definitely more aware than his friend. You didn’t think Diggs would be okay on his own, so you figured you’d just let him crash on your couch for the night.
“Hey, Rafa,” you called out, getting the man’s attention. He looked up and nodded at you. “Are you good if I call a Lyft for you? Like you think you’ll be able to make it to your place and not die or mess up my rating?”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine. What’re you gonna do about Diggs though?” Rafa asked, tilting his head towards the other man.
“I’m thinking he’ll just sleep it off here,” you told him. “He seems pretty gone.”
“I’m still right here,” Daveed said, raising his hand slightly. “I can hear what y’all are saying.”
“Yeah but you’re like half asleep already,” you said. “Unless you wanna head back to wherever you’re staying.”
“Nah, I’m good here,” he said, leaning his head back to rest it on the back of the couch. “I’m ready to sleep.”
You rolled your eyes before turning your attention back to Rafa. “Alright, when do you wanna head out?”
“Whenever you order the car for me,” Rafa told you. You nodded, already loading up the Lyft app so you could get him a ride home. As soon as you confirmed his driver, Rafa started grabbing his things, even though he didn’t bring much to begin with. Once he was near you, though, that’s when he took the opportunity to pull you into a conversation. Rafa took one last look at Diggs to make sure he wasn’t paying attention before he started talking. “Trying to get me out of here so you can have Diggs to yourself, huh?”
“What’re you talking about?” You asked, trying to ignore the heat you immediately felt in your face.
“I get it, you can’t make your move while I’m around,” he continued his teasing. Well, you thought it was teasing. You sure hoped it was teasing. “Just make sure you kids are safe. We don’t need little Diggs babies running around.”
“How long until your ride gets here again?” You asked, looking at your phone. The driver was still five minutes away. It was meant to be a joke, but if you actually had to put up with Rafa’s incessant teasing for five more minutes, you might just lose it. He was the only one you’d actually admitted your crush to, and he was really pushing it tonight. “Man can you chill it?” You asked, stealing a look at Daveed.
“Chill, he’s practically asleep. He’s not paying attention to us.” Rafa laughed at your pained look, trying to get you to look back at him. “Listen, I’m just messing with you, dude. But if you and Diggs end up together or something, I’m rooting for you.”
“Nothing’s gonna happen, man. I’ve been into him since high school, if anything would’ve happened, don’t you think it would’ve happened by now?” You asked, keeping your voice low.
“Trust me, (y/n), there are some things you don’t know about him,” Rafa replied. Before you could ask what he meant, your phone lit up with the notification that your driver was approaching soon.
“Alright, I’ll walk you down to the car,” you said, trying to ignore his vagueness. “Diggs, you cool to stay here if I walk Rafa down?”
Rather than actually answering, Diggs just mumbled something as he proceeded to curl in on himself a little bit. You rolled your eyes and grabbed your keys, nodding to Rafa for the two of you to leave. Getting Rafa into the Lyft with a promise to text you when he was back didn’t take long, and before you knew it, you were back up in your apartment. Diggs was passed out on the couch, but you felt bad looking at him trying to fit his entire body on the small couch. You walked over and shoved his shoulder. “C’mon, Diggs, let’s get you to bed.”
“‘M fine here,” Daveed groaned, slowly blinking awake.
“No, you’re not. You can sleep in my bed and I’ll take the couch,” you said, pulling him to his feet. He stumbled a bit, and you struggled to support him. “C’mon, just walk with me.”
Daveed seemed to be just aware enough to help you out, walking with you as you led him to your room. You helped him to your bed, content to just let him pass out while you went back to clean up before falling asleep on the couch. “Wait,” Daveed called just as you turned to leave.
“Yeah?” You asked, going to stand beside him. Daveed surprised you by tugging you down to lay in bed next to him. “Do you need something?”
“Nah, I just missed you,” Diggs mumbled, pulling you into his hold. If you weren’t sobered up before, you definitely were now. “I don’t like being away from you, never did.”
“Yeah, Diggs, I missed you too,” you said, biting back your hopes and figuring this was platonic.
“No, like, I really missed you. I wanted you with me, sleeping with me like this.” With that, Diggs cuddled himself further into you, which was a little ridiculous considering the size difference. “I kept thinkin’ you’d finally found some guy to keep you busy cuz I was too slow to say anything.”
“What’re you talking about?” You finally decided to ask him. He was half asleep and drunk, and you knew you could actually talk about this tomorrow, but a drunk Diggs was a brutally honest Diggs. You knew that from experience.
“I don’t want you with Rafa or some other dude-“
“Wait, Rafa?” You couldn’t help but cut him off. You were pretty sure you’d never shown any interest in Rafa, especially since you weren’t attracted to him.
“Yeah, didn’t like the way he had his arm around you. I thought he was gonna make a move on my girl to get me to do something like he said he would,” Diggs whined, pressing his face to the crook of your neck. “Can’t even say you’re my girl, but I want you to be.”
“Daveed, you don’t know what you’re saying,” you tried arguing with him, even though you didn’t do anything to stop the physical contact.
“No, I do. I’ve wanted you to be my girl for a while now.”
“Diggs, go to sleep and we’ll talk about this in the morning when you’re sober, okay?”
Daveed hummed his agreement, but once you moved to get up, he pulled you close once again. “Stay with me, please.”
You wanted to argue, but you knew you couldn’t deny him. So instead, you relaxed into his hold and responded in a near whisper that you weren’t even sure he heard. “I’ll stay.”
**********
When you woke up the next morning, you were immediately aware of the solid weight of Daveed’s arm around your waist. You were still cuddled with him, his chest pressed against your back as he nearly curled around you in his sleep. His breaths were still deep, so you knew he was still out. You moved slowly, trying your hardest not to wake him up. Once you were out of his hold, you made your way to the kitchen, figuring food would help ease the conversation the two of you needed to have.
You were brewing coffee when Daveed finally walked out of your room. You pushed a mug in his direction, and he took it with a grateful smile. “So, you’re awake. You remember anything from last night?”
“I remember pizza and drinks but not much after I started falling asleep,” Daveed admitted. “I kinda remember Rafa leaving?”
“Alright, well that makes this a little bit more difficult,” you said, looking down at your own mug. You decided to turn to your fridge, looking for something to make as you tried to figure out your next words. Once you found something, you turned back around to find Daveed staring at you expectantly.
“Makes what a little bit more difficult?”
“Alright, well, last night you said some stuff when I was putting you to bed. You probably don’t remember, but I feel like we still gotta talk about it,” you explained.
“What did I say?” Daveed asked. If he wasn’t nervous before, he definitely was now. He was avoiding eye contact now, his coffee suddenly becoming the most interesting thing in the world.
“Well, first it started out with you saying you missed me-”
“Yeah, you’re one of my best friends, of course I missed you.”
“Yeah, but do you tell all your friends you want them to be your girl? And you’ve wanted them to be your girl for a while?” You asked. You were even kind of shocked by how forward that was. You were expecting to dance around the subject for a little while until Diggs finally dragged it out of you, but here you were, addressing the issue fully in the form of a half-joke.
“What?”
“You heard what I said.”
“(Y/n), I’m so sorry,” he said after a pause. You felt your heart break a little at the apology. Of course he didn’t mean it; he was drunk, tired, and just saying things. Checking the time on your phone, you wondered how long you could stand this before it wouldn’t be considered rude to ask him to leave. “I didn’t mean to tell you-”
“Yeah, I kinda figured,” you interrupted him.
“Like that,” he continued anyways. Now it was your turn to pause.
“Wait, what?”
“I mean, I’ve been wanting to tell you for a while now, I just didn’t expect it to be like that. You know, so this wouldn’t happen,” he explained. “Yeah, I like you, and I want you to be my girl. I just really hope this doesn’t make things different.”
“Diggs, no matter what this changes things at least a little,” you started. You could feel the heat rising in your face, the change in conversation not something you’d expected. You’d wanted this to happen since high school, and now that it was, it was kind of unbelievable. “But I’d like to be your girl, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“It’s not going to be easy, especially since we’re both so busy.”
“I know what I’m getting into. I’ve known you for how many years now?”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Daveed said with a small smile. “Am I allowed to stay for food?”
“Yes, you’re allowed to stay,” you told him, trying not to let him see your own smile. “I think we should talk more about all of this anyways.”
“As long as you’re my girl, I’m fine with whatever we need to talk about,” Daveed said, walking over to you and bringing you into a hug. You stayed there for a second, enjoying the feeling. You didn’t know exactly what the two of you would talk about, but you had a feeling it would involve a lot more cuffing language.

Coach All-Might often lectured on the importance of momentum, the desirable quality of motion, which makes a player hard to stop. But the textbook definition did the concept little justice. Over the past two months, Momo had learned that teams built momentum better than individual players. And once acquired, the U.A. heroes pushed their collective energy to the max with smiles plastered across their faces, win or lose.
As her team’s defensive starters lined up on the 20-yard line, Momo’s skin erupted in gooseflesh. It was third down, a passing play no doubt, and all eyes were drawn to the dynamic line up of opposites in the tight end and cornerback positions -- Shiketsu High School’s Inasa Yoarashi and U.A. High’s Shouto Todoroki.
Of course, Todoroki had not started as a cornerback, not until after Coach All-Might had shaken up the lineup last Fall, but Momo wouldn’t have known that by the way he’d dominated the field on defense. Shouto read an opponent’s intentions as if he’d written their playbooks. Cold stone still one minute and hot in pursuit of an interception the next, he’d earned his nickname, IcyHot, the hard way.
A hush descended over the crowd as the play clock began its countdown. Even the cheerleader’s chats quieted in favor of rustling pom-poms and hushed murmurs of anticipation. From the sidelines, Momo held her breath, tugging nervously on the collar of her official polo. As she watched Todoroki, her fingers dipped to stroke the white embroidery that showcased her name and position, Momo Yaoyorozu, Assistant Equipment Manager, U.A. High Heroes Football Team.
Yet, as much as Momo honed in on her favorite cornerback, Shouto's attention was fixed on Inasa.
The boy with bright white and red hair hadn’t been asked to cover the powerhouse tight end, but he did so almost on instinct. U.A.’s defensive line adjusted, players zipping back and forth behind the line of scrimmage, as Shiketsu’s offense arranged and rearranged itself. Shotuo stayed with Inasa, looking for the split-second tell he’d uncovered after watching endless hours film, the one he had whispered in Momo’s ear while she’d helped him into his pads.
As Shiketsu’s quarterback snapped the ball, Shouto’s left eye narrowed, and Momo remembered to breathe, realizing that Todoroki must have found what he was looking for. The cornerback didn’t stop to watch the center snap the ball. He was already darting deep downfield, showcasing athleticism with wide, strong strides as Insa ran an innocuous out route.
But then the tide turned, and Seiji Shishikura made a daring throw from within the collapsing walls of the pocket. The ball headed for Inasa, now poised to catch it near the five-yard line, an inevitable touchdown until... Shouto Todoroki snatched the coveted pigskin out of midair, and through the audience’s collective gasp, Momo swore she heard five incendiary words mumbled in Inasa’s direction before Shouto darted toward Shiketsu’s endzone.
“I’ll be taking that now.”
The crowd roared. Mina Ashido and Toru Hagakure directed the excitement with synchronized jumps and flicks of their pom-poms, The home side of the stadium reveled in their school’s preferred chant -- “Plus Ultra! Plus Ultra!”
Todoroki went down near Shiketsu’s 15-yard line, tackled by a running back whose blond hair spilled out of his helmet. As Shouto fell, Momo tensed again. She felt her heartbeat in her throat but managed to relax when Shouto stood, calmly handing the football to the referee. Unfazed, he jogged toward their sideline, making intense eye contact with his team’s assistant equipment manager.
U.A. had the momentum once again, and the offense took advantage of it. The quarterback, Izuku Midoria, lead the heroes to a resounding homecoming victory over the Shiketsu Captains with the broadest smile on his face.
...
A year ago, Momo could hardly have imagined having more than a handful of friends over after the homecoming game, but now, three-quarters of the football team, half of the cheerleading squad and nearly the entire band was packed into her father’s McMansion. Though Momo had initially scoffed at the idea of beefing up her college applications by serving as assistant equipment manager of the football team, she had to admit that Mr. Aizawa’s advice had been spot on. Not only had she taken initiative by inserting herself into a male-dominated sport, but wallflower Momo had also managed made new friends in her junior year of high school -- a stupendous feat if ever there was one.
And as it turned out, neither Momo’s parents nor her best friend, Kyoka, minded the new additions in their loved one’s life. In fact, no sooner than Momo had asked her father if a small get together after the homecoming game was permissible than he had suddenly announced a burning desire to visit a bed and breakfast with his fiancee that same Friday night. Momo’s mother would check in the following morning, of course, and (for better or worse) Kyoka set up the sound system and arranged for a few kegs of weak beer.
An hour into the party, Momo looked around with astonishment. Everywhere she turned, a different person was smiling back at her, neither poking fun or laughing at her offbeat sense of style. Everyone she talked to responded with words of thanks and promises to be careful with the many valuables scattered throughout the decadent home. The uneasy feeling in Momo’s stomach settled as she sipped a noxious concoction Kyoka called jungle juice.
All felt right with the world. Except…
“Everything ok, Mo?” Kyoka asked, troubled by the way her best friend’s eyebrows were suddenly furrowed.
“Oh, yes,” Momo responded brightly. “I’m just a little overwhelmed by the crowd. Can you watch things while I step out for a sec?”
Kyoka nodded in reply, the fringe of the asymmetrical bob bounced with her dangling earrings.
“Sure thing, Mo.”
Up the steps and through the second level’s main hall, Momo traveled, weaving her way through classmates and kissing couples corralled in dark corners. She found her room unoccupied and breathed a sigh of relief as the door shut behind her with a comforting click. The young woman sat down at her desk and stared out the window. With a fond expression, she watched Bakugo and Kirishima toss a football back and forth.
It had always been a longshot, to be sure. When Momo had invited Todoroki to her party, she’d realized that his father rarely let him attend social events, not even school-sponsored dances or festivals. In fact, Shouto and Momo had attended the same school since first grade and had only become acquainted recently courtesy of a minor equipment malfunction -- a freak accident his father hadn’t hesitated to blow out of proportion.
Enji Todoroki was well-known as severe and obsessive, and perhaps Momo had made unfair assumptions about his son based on that knowledge. But soon, the mystery of IcyHot the football star had unraveled like fine thread in her nimble hands, and Momo found herself reconsidering everything she knew about Shouto Todoroki. Countless conversations later, the young woman didn’t think it was unfair to say that he was kind despite his quiet nature and thoughtful both on and off the football field.
Momo didn’t have to help him take off his pads and ice his bumps and bruises after games, but she did so religiously with a reverence she reserved for, well, nothing else. In return, Shouto taught Momo about football, explaining both general concepts and, eventually, the finer points of the game. And it all felt like it was building toward something more, except there was never an opportunity to...
“Yaoyorozu?”
Momo’s chest tightened as she heard a familiar, gravelly voice. She turned to find the source of the sound, hardly believing her eyes. There he stood, an impressive sight, though awkward, in khaki pants and a white polo shirt. Taut muscles fought against the thin cotton, and Momo fingers grasped the folds of her pale pink maxi skirt. Her high top converses tilted inward, toes curling within as she thought about how he sighed when she pressed warm compresses against his sore muscles.
Would it be completely inappropriate to trace the edges of the burn mark over his left eye?
Most likely, yes. But that didn’t stop Momo from thinking about it.
“You came!” she exclaimed, rising from the chair to greet the boy she definitely had not fantasized about in this very room. Momo gripped the nearest post of her bed to steady herself. “I’m so glad you could make it.”
Jirou said you’d be up here. Can I come in?”
“Of course. Have a seat.”
Warily, Shouto entered the room, softly closing the door behind him. He leaned against the endboard of Momo’s 4-poster bed and looked around expectedly.
“Your house is-”
“An eyesore,” she interrupted. “I know. My mom took all the taste in their divorce. Dad doesn’t know the meaning of understated, but it’s home.”
“I wasn’t going to say ‘eyesore,’” Shouto asserted, though Momo noticed he didn’t disagree. “Have your parents been divorced for long?”
Momo nodded. “Since middle school.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. They’re much better off as friends, especially now that dad is engaged and mom’s remarried. I like my stepmoms a lot.”
At that, Shouto stifled a small chuckle.
“What?” Momo asked.
“I was wondering if your dad’s fiancee has better taste.”
“Afraid not,” Momo laughed. “I don’t think she’s ever met a fleur de lis she didn’t like, but by the time they get married, I’ll be out of here.”
“Damn,” Shouto added in mock disappointment, “I was so looking forward to the wedding pictures, seeing you all dressed up.”
Under the cover of semi-darkness, heat spread to the apples of Momo’s cheeks, and a strange feeling burned in her belly when she spied the green cocktail dress hung over her closet door. Dare she be so bold?
“Well, you could just come to the homecoming dance tomorrow,” she stated, eyes fixed on the plush carpet. “I’ll be taking tickets by the door, but I think I might be able to step away for a dance or two. And I’d like to spend more time with you, talking like this, you know?”
The grin faded slowly from Shouto’s face as his gaze also drifted to an uninteresting patch of carpet. “You know my dad’s strict. If I ask to go, he’ll come up with some conflict. I had to tell him I was watching game film here tonight just to get away.”
Momo tried to pretend she wasn’t disappointed. “Oh… He believed that?”
“The only thing good about my dad’s football fixation is that he assumes everyone else is just as obsessed as he is.”
For a moment, all was silent as the letdown washed over Momo. From the opposite side of her room, she could hear the ornate cuckoo clock ticking, counting the precious seconds she wasted in Todoroki’s presence. However, Momo refused to back down so quickly, not when the stars had aligned so perfectly to grant her this moment. Not when Shouto was in her room at her party, sitting beside her, completely unsupervised, on her bed.
This was Momo's moment.  She'd be a fool not to seize it.
“Todoroki, I-”
Whatever words Momo wanted to say were silenced by Shouto’s thumb pressed against her lips. His hand gently cupped the cheek, and she leaned into his warm touch, wary of the mesmerizing mismatched eyes that threatened to steal her senses.
“I’m not very good with my words, Yaoyorozu,” he said in earnest. “But I’d like to ask you if I could...”
“Could what?”
“I mean, if you would be agreeable, I’d like to…”
“Go on.”
Shouto growled in frustration and pressed both hands against the endboard. “Everyone makes this sound so easy,” he groaned. “I never seem to know how to say the thing I mean when I have the chance.”
Momo steeled her nerves as her stomach practically dissolved in a heap of butterflies. It seemed she did dare tonight more than she ever had before.
“Would you like to kiss me, Shouto?”
“God, yes!”
He took his lips to hers with an urgency that Momo could not have anticipated, and the world as she knew it faded away, save the small space the young couple shared. If kisses could talk, this one would have been eloquent. It would have told Momo that he’d always carried a little torch for her, for as long as he could rightly remember while reciting the loveliest verses of poetry known to mankind. But, of course, without words, the liplock was equally pleasant, capped off by a sigh of relief from both sides.
“You don’t know how long I’ve wanted to do that,” he said, forehead pressed against hers.
Momo saw no room to argue but in the interest of full disclosure… “Then why don’t you do it again. Maybe I can figure it out.”
Momo and Shouto’s momentum wasn’t slowing down anytime soon.
A/N:  So, for academia, we have my hero academia... without the hero! Yep, it's a quirk-less AU featuring Todomomo (because why not)! I've written a lot of that this month, and I kinda love it. By now, you all know the drill. Feel free to send me pairing requests for particular prompts (Fictober or original) via my tumblr, and if you read something you like, don't hesitate to let me know. Your kudos, bookmarks, subscriptions, comments, likes and reblogs make my day!

Kazetsuyo Novel Translation: Excerpt from Chapter 6: The Voice of the Soul
(Pages 282 - 288)
Tumblr media
At Joji’s suggestion, everyone at Chikusei-so had decided to gather at the Twins’ room two days before the qualifier for a casual drinking session. For these members, drinking was the fastest way to relieve tension and foster team unity.
Since the landlord held the token title of coach, he was invited to join as well. Therein lies the problem, however. The money that the landlord had given to Kiyose to fix the hole awhile ago had instead been passed on to Shindo, who used it to subsidise their expenses for the Hakone Ekiden; all the money they had would still not have been sufficient to cover their transport and accommodation costs.
And so, as the landlord was about to step into the entranceway, Jota had deliberately intercepted his path, flashing the gravure page of a magazine to catch his eye. Distracted by the swimsuit model, the landlord took off his shoes and entered the house without so much as glancing up at the ceiling, following closely behind Jota while he made his way up the stairs. The strategy was a success! Watching from the kitchen, Kakeru and Joji gave each other a silent high five.
Prince had been instructed to sit on the hole, on the orders of Kiyose and Shindo not to move from that spot in the landlord’s presence come hell or high water— not even if an earthquake occurred or if he needed to go for a bathroom break — hiding the evidence while he read his manga.
“The coach will now give a speech!” Kiyose announced, tipsy from the alcohol.
Hugging his bottle, the landlord wobbled to stand on his feet. Seeing him act like a real coach for the first time, Kakeru waited eagerly for him to speak.
Tumblr media
“Since the qualifier is approaching… I shall share with you the secret to winning,” the landlord declared in a dignified, husky voice. “The secret is… to alternate between your left foot and your right!”
The room fell dead silent.
Detecting their dismay, the landlord concluded, “Keep at it, and you’ll reach the finish line eventually.”
“That’s it?!” King waved his glass, gesticulating wildly.
“Is this person okay?” Yuki bemoaned.
“Can’t we find ourselves a more decent coach?!” Nico scoffed.
“Ahhhh… there goes my motivation…” Jota whined.
The grumbling noises were escalating. Kakeru quickly diverted the conversation to Kiyose.
“Haiji, from the very beginning, you believed that all the members here had a real shot at Hakone, even though I thought there’s a fifty-fifty chance we wouldn’t make it… why were you so confident about this?”
“Hmm?”
Kiyose looked up from his glass, grinning ear to ear.
“Because you guys can really drink!”
“Huuuuuh?!”
The room stopped complaining about the landlord and turned their attention to Kiyose.
“Long-distance runners tend to have greater tolerance for alcohol due to their high metabolism… and you guys drink like a fish, you know? I’ve been observing you lot alllllllllll this time, so I knew you could do it for sure…”
“I can’t believe you!” Shindo threw his hands up in the air. “If you’re looking for a drunk, there’s plenty of them in this world!”
“You dragged all of us into the mud for THIS reason?!” Yuki was beyond livid.
Kakeru groaned. He had expected Kiyose to say something inspiring to lift the team’s morale, but it went in a completely opposite direction instead.
“You mean to tell me we ended up here because of our drinking habits?! Are you serious?!” Prince was so agitated he almost got up, but saw Shindo staring daggers at him and quickly planted his rear end back down again. “How is this any different from building a house on quicksand?!”
“It’s not jusssst because of that, of course…” Kiyose was slurring in his speech. “I could tell you guys possess the latent talent to shine! I could feel it!”
“You’re drunk, Haiji…” Kakeru sighed.
“Hey, can’t we talk about something a little more light-hearted?” King sprawled on the tatami, lamenting out loud.
“Ah, that reminds me! How are things with you two and Hana-chan?”  Musa egged the twins.
“With Hana-chan?”
“Things are well, I guess?” the twins answered innocently.
They don’t get it. These two totally don’t get it at all. The whispers were unanimous.
“So do you two have girlfriends or what?” Nico, who had been chewing on a piece of dried squid earlier, casually raised the question again. “If you do, you should get them to come cheer for us the day after tomorrow!”
Such topics were seldom brought up in Chikusei-so. Given their living space was as cramped as it is, one would tend to be mindful not to pry into another’s private affairs. Besides, even if they didn’t go out of their way to talk about it, if someone among them had a girlfriend, the rest would likely have sensed it somehow.
But then again, the team had been busy training this half a year; so no one has had an inkling as to the status of their teammates’ love life; not that any of them ever brought their girlfriends back to their rooms before—since anything said or done behind thin walls would certainly be heard.
“We’re accepting applications!” the twins replied together.
If you’re “accepting applications”, then for crying out loud please notice the “candidate” that’s right in front of you!, thought Kakeru exasperatedly.
King had gone silent, curling his body into a ball.
“And what about you?” Yuki threw the question back at Nico.
“I don’t have the strength to deal with that kinda thing right now.” Nico mused, scratching the stubble on his jaw.
“As for me,” Shindo hung his head down, “I’ve been running myself ragged with the negotiations between the committee and the university… I think it’s just a matter of time before she breaks up with me.”
“You’re dating someone?”
Kakeru was stunned. He would never have pegged a plain and honest guy like Shindo to be basking in the brilliance of romance.
“Shindo already got himself a girlfriend when he started university,” Musa explained. “I am hopeless though… I can’t even get anyone to come back to my hometown with me…”
Do things really need to move that fast……?!
“Don’t you have a girlfriend, Kakeru?”
Kakeru shook his head at Musa’s question.
“I’m not popular with the ladies.”
“Doesn’t seem that way to me.”
“Um… what about you, Prince?”
Kakeru tried to draw attention away from himself, but Prince’s head remained buried in his manga, not even bothering to look up.
“I’m only interested in 2D girls.”
Even though you were born with an idol's face, what a waste…
Prince gave Kiyose a sideway glance.
“More importantly…. have you heard the rumours about Haiji floating around the Lit department? He may look like this, but he’s actually quite a —— ow!”
With a flick of his fingers, Kiyose sent a peanut flying right between Prince’s eyebrows. Prince let out a tiny yelp and clammed up. No one else was brave enough to probe Kiyose for details after that.
Kiyose gave a thin smile.
“How about you, Yuki?”
“I’ll have you know I’m of good character, plus I’m not too shabby in the looks department either. Far as my future goes, I’ve got this in the bag.” Yuki stated matter-of-factly.
King had retreated even further into his shell.
“Aren’t you boys going to ask about me?”
As the landlord poured himself another cup of shōchū, there came a ringing sound.

Footnotes
1. I have SO many thoughts about this scene regarding Kakeru and drinking and it got long it became its own post, hahaha.
2. This passage was definitely among my top 10 favourite scenes in the novel because, in a span of seven pages, you could pick up on nearly everyone’s character quirks. Also Me@Kakeru this entire exchange regarding Hana and the twins: SON can you even hear yourself in Chapter 10.
3. Elements from this scene have been split into two separate drinking parties in the anime - one in episode 5 (where Shindo mentioned he’s got a girlfriend and the squad was completely wasted), and the other in episode 15 (where Coach Tazaki made his speech). Yuki also received a call from his mother immediately after this scene and I… hope to get around to that bit sometime… soon. Maybe.
4. Even though some of the Haiji and Ouji moments in the anime are original material, I like how it’s quite canon aligned to their level of familiarity in the novel. Akane seems most privy to Haiji’s conduct outside of Aotake, and in my personal experience, juniors and seniors in university don’t usually mix even if they’re from the same department, so for rumours of Haiji to reach a second year like Akane would imply that Haiji’s name gets around even among the juniors. It’s either that, or Akane’s lurking skills are next level, and he’s able to pick up rumours circulating amongst the seniors and/or he actually hangs out with Haiji (and Haiji’s peers) after class for whatever reason. Well well well…
