But when it comes to security, attacking is easier than defending. For Apple to fend off third-party app stores or other products that give its customers more rights to their property, Apple needs to be perfect. To defeat this, third parties only need to find a single error.

This principle keeps getting proved. A new jailbreak from the unc0ver team works on every Iphone and every version of Ios, including version 13.5, only released this week.

To create a jailbreak tool, hackers look for flaws in an earlier version of iOS that Apple did not reveal. The vulnerabilities allow the core iOS software. To keep it safe, Apple did not reveal such vulnerabilities, even some of them are fixed. The job of hackers is to find undisclosed vulnerabilities that have not yet been fixed. Hackers have already found one in iOS 13.5, which has just been released.

Few groups of hackers work and find those jailbreak tools. Once the jailbreak tool is used to unlock the iPhone, the new vulnerabilities are discovered.

Hackers also had access to the preview version of iOS 14, which was announced in June a few months ago.

A company called Grayshift provides a tool called GrayKey that can guess the password of any iPhone that has released a software called Hide UI.

Apple talks up iPhone security, but Zerodium says it's falling behind.

For as long as the iPhone has existed, there have been people trying to “jailbreak” it to bypass Apple’s draconian restrictions. The cat-and-mouse game between Apple and hackers has continued over the last decade, but Apple has usually come out on top. For the first time in years, a hacking group has released a universal jailbreak for iOS. The “unc0ver” tool is a bit harder to install than the jailbreaks of old, but it works on almost all modern iDevices. 

When we talk about jailbreaks, what we’re really seeing is the manifestation of a security vulnerability. Apple carefully controls what apps and services are allowed to do on its devices by controlling app distribution. If an app doesn’t follow Apple’s rules, it doesn’t make it into the App Store. Jailbreaking an iPhone allows you to install more powerful apps with access to the system. Users like that, but Apple doesn’t because, again, this is technically a security hole. 

Jailbreaks used to be plentiful and easy to install — there were even a few that worked wimpy by going to a webpage. As Apple has tightened security, jailbreaks have been less available. Unc0ver is the first universal jailbreak since the release of iOS 10 in 2017. Unc0ver works on all iOS-powered devices running iOS 11 through the latest 13.5 builds. 

The official unc0ver website has instructions on installation, which requires connecting the device to a computer. Depending on your desktop operating system, you can use tools like AltStore, Apple’s Xcode, or Cydia Impactor to install the .unc0ver .ipa file. Since you need physical access to a device, there’s no risk of running into malware leveraging this vulnerability. However, it does make your phone less secure. Anyone who gets their hands on it can access your data with the help of unc0ver. 

The vulnerability at the heart of unc0ver is in the iOS kernel, a component that connects the hardware to the software. This is a so-called zero-day flaw, which means Apple has no previous knowledge of it, and no patches exist. You can bet that Apple’s developers are pulling apart the unc0ver installer to figure out how it works, though. 

If you’re interested in jailbreaking your phone, you might want to get on it. The team behind unc0ver expects Apple will have a patch in a matter of weeks. Anyone who is already jailbroken at that point will be able to stay on the older software builds if they want to keep using the jailbreak features.

Unc0ver Hackers Find New Zero Day Bug to Jailbreak iOS 13.5

The infamous unc0ver hacker group has released the latest jailbreak for Apple’s notoriously hard-to-crack iOS operating system. The hack allows iPhone and iPad users on the latest iOS version to install a mod that eliminates some restrictions associated with Apple hardware and software, including installing unapproved apps.

Unc0ver lead developer Pwn20wnd says “every other jailbreak released since iOS 9 used 1day exploits that were either patched in the next beta version or the hardware.”

Not this one, though. According to the hacker, this jailbreak leverages a zero-day kernel bug in iOS versions 11 through 13.5. Supported hardware includes everything from iPhone 6S to the new iPhone 11 Pro Max models.

“unc0ver is a jailbreak, which means that you can have the freedom to do whatever you would like to do to your iOS device,” reads the promo on unc0ver.dev. “Allowing you to change what you want and operate within your purview, unc0ver unlocks the true power of your iDevice.”

Jailbreaking typically opens the device to security threats, including malware.

This jailbreak, Pwn20nd claims, is safer as it “just adds exceptions to the existing rules,” the hacker told WIRED.”It only enables reading new jailbreak files and parts of the file system that contain no user data.”

The team emphasizes the security aspect of the jailbreak, saying unc0ver preserves security layers designed to protect the user’s personal information and device by simply “adjusting them as necessary instead of removing them.”

“With this security adjusted on your iOS device, you can run your favorite jailbreak apps and tweaks while still being protected from attackers,” the hacking group claims.

Regardless of how safe the creators claim this hack is, we strongly advise against jailbreaking. Software distributed through non-official channels – not vetted by Apple or any official authority for that matter – can bring serious security risks. Stay safe out there!

Apple will likely take a while to find and patch unc0ver’s new zero-day bug, but the fix will nonetheless arrive in a future iOS release.

A partial build of iOS 14 was recently leaked in the wild. While some speculate this leak might have something to do with Pwn20wnd finding his kernel bug, the hacker says that’s not the case.

“Not at all, I don’t operate with leaked iOS builds,” he said.

Jailbreak for all iOS 13.5 devices expected soon due to new kernel exploit

Jailbreak users had a big surprise last year with the announcement of checkm8, an exploit found on almost every chip made by Apple that allowed the jailbreak process on several devices running different versions of iOS. Now, jailbreak is coming for even more devices, as unc0ver team announced today a new tool that can patch “every signed iOS version on every device.”

That means devices such as the iPhone 11, iPhone SE, and the 2020 iPad Pro can be jailbroken even if they are running iOS 13.5 — the latest version of iOS currently available. The new unc0ver 5.0 tool is based on a kernel vulnerability found by Pwn20wnd, a well-known developer and hacker.

If you’re not used to jailbreaking, it generally refers to the removal of iOS software restrictions on Apple devices to install apps outside the App Store and even modify the entire system.

The team didn’t say when the new jailbreak tool will be available to the public, but their official website indicates that it will be very soon. Currently, Checkra1n — which is another jailbreak tool based on the checkm8 exploit — can only unlock devices running with up to A11 Bionic chip (iPhone 8 and iPhone X).

One advantage of unc0ver over Checkra1n is that it can run on macOS, Windows, and Linux, while Checkra1n is only officially available for macOS.
