Thứ 1, Soi trước nguồn sáng

Những hình bóng chìm trên tơ tiền thật được in một cách tinh sảo, sáng trắng.Ở tiền giả, hình bóng chìm không tinh xảo. Các chữ, số trên dây bảo hiểm không rõ ràng, không sắc nét, một số trường hợp không có yếu tố này. Hình định vị không khớp khít , các khe trắng không liền nhau như tiền thật.

Thứ 2, vuốt nhẹ lên tờ tiền

Vuốt nhẹ tiền bạn sẽ cảm nhận được độ nổi, nhám ráp của nét in ở các vị trí như chân dung của Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh, Quốc huy, mệnh giá tiền bằng số và bằng chữ, dòng chữ  “Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam” và “Ngân hàng Nhà nước Việt Nam”. Ở tiền giả, vuốt nhẹ tay chỉ có cảm giác trơn lỳ, không nhám, ráp như ở tiền thật hoặc có cảm giác gợn tay do vết dập trên nền giấy, không phải do độ nổi của nét in. Một số tờ được làm tinh xảo hơn, khi vuốt nhẹ tại các vị trí này cũng cảm nhận được độ nổi nhưng không nhám, ráp được như tiền thật, nhằm đánh lừa cảm giác của người tiêu dùng khi kiểm tra nét in nổi.

Thứ 3 : phân biệt qua màu sắc

Bạn có thể chao nghiêng tờ tiền để kiểm tra màu sắc của tờ tiền như mực đổi màu, Iriodin, hình ẩn nổi.

+ Mực đổi màu (OVI) là khi bạn nhìn thẳng tờ tiền sẽ có màu vàng và khi nhìn nghiêng thì nó sẽ đổi sang màu xanh lá cây

+ Iriodin là dải màu vàng chạy dọc tờ tiền, lấp lánh ánh kim khi nhìn nghiêng tờ tiền.

+ Hình ẩn nổi : khi bạn đặt tờ tiền nằm ngang tầm mắt thì sẽ nhìn thấy chữ “VN” nổi rõ ở tờ tiền có mệnh giá tiền 200.000, 100.000 đồng và dòng chữ “NH” ở tờ tiền có mệnh giá mệnh giá 50.000, 20.000 đồng.

Ở tiền giả, có yếu tố OVI nhưng không đổi màu, hoặc có đổi màu nhưng không đúng màu như ở tiền thật, không có yếu tố Iriodin hoặc có in giả dài màu vàng nhưng không lấp lánh như ở tiền thật.

Thứ 4, kiểm tra các ô cửa trong suốt

Cửa sổ nhỏ có yếu tố hình ẩn (DOE): là chi tiết nền nhựa trong suốt, ở phía trên bên trái mặt trước tờ bạc. Khi đưa cửa sổ tới gần sát mắt, nhìn xuyên qua cửa sổ tới nguồn sáng đỏ (bóng đèn sợi đốt, ngọn lửa...) sẽ thấy hình ẩn xung quanh nguồn sáng.

Cửa sổ lớn có các chi tiết về mệnh giá được dập nổi.

Ở tiền giả ở ô cửa sổ nhỏ không in hình ẩn và cửa sổ lớn thì mệnh giá in nổi nhưng sẽ không được tinh xảo như tiền thật.

Oh, then there's all the regional issues...I guess enough to keep us busy for quite some time!

The £2.00 Machin was issued in two colours. On the left, we have "Deep Grey-Blue" from 1999. On the right we have "Slate Blue" from 2003. Both of these are beautiful stamps and again the photo fails them! The "Deep Grey-Blue" is printed by intaglio & gravure and has a sensational almost tactile feel to it. On the other hand, the "Slate Blue" has the pearlescent sheen of the Iriodin Ink and so it literally shines! Gorgeous all around!

The £1.50 Machin was first issued in 1999 as "Terracotta". It exists in several different subtypes depending on the printer and printing method. Shown here for comparison is a 2003 version printed with the previously mentioned pearlescent iriodin ink. It's sheen is quite beautiful although it does not photograph very well...

The £1 Machin was issued in three colours for the standard sized stamp (it was also issued in larger formats dating back to the predecimal days...those will be featured someday!) In 1995 we have "Mauve" which for the first time incorporated Iriodin ink overprinting, giving the stamp a pearlescent sheen (which photographs do not give it justice!) On the 40th anniversary of the issue of the first Machin it was issued as "Ruby" in 2007 ("Ruby" being chosen as a colour traditionally associated with such anniversaries.) A commemorative sheet was also issued incorporating both stamps. Finally, in 2013 it was issued again as "Wood Brown".
