Wells Fargo Donates $600,000 for Revitalization Efforts in Los Angeles County

Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) today announced $600,000 in donations to local nonprofits to support housing, education and neighborhood revitalization for Los Angeles residents.

“The NeighborhoodLIFT program is another example of our commitment to Los Angeles and our efforts to bring forward housing affordability solutions to communities across the U.S.,” said David Galasso, Wells Fargo lead region president Greater California . “The program will help hardworking families and individuals get on the path to successfully becoming homeowners.”

The grants are funded by the Wells Fargo Foundation and follows Wells Fargo’s announcement in June of an evolution in the company’s philanthropic strategy that includes a $1 billion commitment over the next six years to address the U.S. housing affordability crisis.

NeighborhoodLIFT local initiative grants will be awarded to the following local nonprofits:

Destination Crenshaw — $25,000 for the construction a 1.3-mile-long outdoor art and cultural experience along the Crenshaw/LAX Line. The art will be organized around four themes — improvisation, firsts, dreams and togetherness — and will celebrate the history and culture of Black Los Angeles while revitalizing the neighborhood and ultimately fostering a new economic center.

The area called San Bernardino was occupied by Spanish missionaries in the 19th century. This is because the land was incredibly fertile, and they utilized it as an outpost for missionaries who traversed the whole California area preaching the word to the Indian people who were spread out across the land. According to preserved history, a Catholic missionary named father Francisco Dumetz took a trip from Mission San Gabriel to San Bernardino Valley in 1810 in an effort to transform Indian tribes into Christianity. He built an altar and named the area San Bernardino after Saint Bernardino who was the patron saint at that time according to Catholic calendar.

Rancho San Bernardino was developed by the Mission Gabriel in 1819, which was geared towards the spiritual wellbeing of the Indians. However, the missionaries also educated the community on the best ways to tap water from mill creek, better farming and irrigation techniques. As the missionaries progressed financially, the local neighborhoods followed suite.

In 1834, Governor Figeroa of California offered a decree to close down all missions in the location. Nevertheless, this did not prevent this place from growing. It gave birth to huge Spanish rancheros. The abandoned missions became trading hubs, and the economy started expanding.

The landowners constructed beautiful haciendas in the area, and the ranchos were so sightly such that they began drawing in visitors.

However, the Indian tribes residing in the desert began launching attacks in the haciendas and wiped out all the herds. The Spanish inhabitants gave up and left the area. It stayed deserted up until 1851 when a group of 500 Mormons showed up. Due to the abundance of water and the growth of sycamores, mustard, wild oats, cottonwoods, and willows, the Mormons named the stream Lytle Creek after Captain Andrew Lytle who was their leader.

Knowledgeable about the attacks by the surrounding Indian communities, they built a stockade around the area they occupied and named it Fort San Bernardino.

The city of San Bernardino was officially incorporated in 1852. It had a population of 1200 individuals. Given that 900 of them were Mormons who were God-fearing, it was named a temperance town where no betting or drinking was allowed.

The Mormons were, nevertheless, recalled in 1857. Despite this, they had established stores, a strong government, a network of roadways, and schools in the short duration that they served in the location.
