“Hey, Tobio!” you called from the kitchen, peeking your head out to look at him. He hummed in response. “Can you come bake these cupcakes with me?” surprisingly, he paused the recording from one of his games and walked over to you and into the kitchen. You could already feel the excitement start to bubble within your core.
You had to ban him from entering the kitchen without you for a month because he almost burnt the house down trying to cook something himself. He’s still banned because you truly can’t trust him after burning the ramen.
“I found this really good looking recipe online! I really wanna try it out with you!” you pleaded, knowing he wouldn’t be able to refuse. You showed him the recipe, scrolling through the steps and pictures, “those do look good..”
“Exactly! That’s why you should make them with me!” Tobio pondered for a second, before nodding, agreeing to bake them with you, “yAY-!”
You took another look at the recipe, making sure you got everything you needed. “Okay~ i think we have everything.” you said, placing your phone on the counter.
“First, we have to preheat the oven and line the cupcake tin with 12 cupcake cases,” you turned around and walked out the kitchen, coming back with a grocery bag you had gotten previously. You took out a small pack of red and white cupcake cases, placing them on the counter and putting the bag away for later. “Open these and place one each into those,” you pointed at the cupcake tins, “I’ll preheat the oven.” the setter picked up the bag and opened it as you headed over to the oven.
You watched closely as he placed the cases into the tins, accidentally placing two into one of them, however, you didn’t really care. As long as he wasn’t burning anything this time around.
Although, you do wonder how he could mess up such a simple task..
You set the oven to 180 degrees and picked up your phone, scrolling to the next step.
You read the next step ‘cream together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy’ you get out the butter and sugar you had gotten beforehand and throw it into the mixing bowl, using your hand mixer to cream it.
You notice Tobio watching intently at what you’re doing, probably noting the circular motion you’re using to presumably mix everything evenly.
Though, you already know this is information he’ll forget overnight, considering it’s not in any way related to volleyball.
After mixing for a while, you looked back over at your phone, reading the next steps. ‘then add the beaten eggs one by one and the vanilla extract, mixing well between each one to ensure the mixture does not curdle.’ “hm, okay~”
You took out the eggs you had previously done and poured it in bit by bit, mixing well in between each one like the instructions said.
Afterwards you added the vanilla extract, mixing that in just as well.
“What’s that?” Tobio asked, looking over your shoulder. “Vanilla extract. It adds the flavor, Tobio.”
“Oh.”
You scrolled down to find the next steps, reading them out loud despite knowing your boyfriend would have no idea what you’re talking about.
“Sift in the flour, cocoa and baking powder and carefully fold in until just incorporated, do not over mix. Then add the red colour and carefully mix until distributed evenly through the batter.” the instructions read.
You got out the flower from the grocery bag you placed to the side earlier, opening it up and pouring some out into a bowl.
You opened up the drawer and got out a swifter, handing it to Tobio.
“Hold this above the mix.” “That’s it?”
“Yup!”
You positioned his arm exactly where you wanted him to hold it and proceeded carefully pour the flour into it
“What does this do?”
“It gets rid of all the clumps inside the flour, see?” you said as you pointed to a small bump inside he was sifting. He nodded in response
“Try shaking the swifter a bit, the flour won’t just unclump itself~”
“Oh.”
He gently shook the swifter as you instructed, making a bit of a mess but doing much better than you expected. You continued to pour in a little more until all the flour in the bowl was neatly sifted, leaving only a few more stubborn clumps inside the swifter.
You got out a spoon and used it to smooth them down, not wanting to waste any flour, even if it was only a bit.
“Now the cocoa powder~”
“There’s more??”
You laughed at his comment while getting the cocoa powder out of the bag, also taking out some baking powder while you were at it.
You then poured both into separate bowls, getting ready to sift them aswell.
The two of you managed to finish sifting the last of it and added the red food colouring, giving it the velvet look you were going for.
You washed your hands and began to fold the mix with your hands, using a continuous pattern to make sure you mixed and folded everything neatly and evenly.
You noticed how Tobio was watching very closely, probably still trying to learn. You find it cute how attentive he is for you.
“Okay, i think it’s done!” you say as you head over to the sink to wash of your hands, looking back at Tobio to make sure he doesn’t fuck it up.
“What do we do now?”
“Put it in the tins,”
“….?”
You jokingly roll your eyes and pick up your phone, reading the next step,
‘Spoon into the cupcake cases until they are 2/3 full then place in the oven for 25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean and the cakes are springy to the touch.’
You watched the confusion twist on Tobio’s face, already knowing you would have to simplify those instructions for him.
“Use this spoon to put the batter into the cases you already finished, don’t fill them all the way though.”
“Oh, okay.”
You watched his movements closely as he did what you instructed, not exactly perfect but nothing too bad. Not cases weren’t even and one of them wasn’t even filled half-way but nothing was being burned and that’s all that mattered.
“Done?” you ask upon seeing all the cupcake cases were filled, to which the setter nodded. You looked them over and pointed out the ones he messed up, fixing them for him, telling him to take note for next time.
Once you were done you placed the tin into the preheated oven, a wave of heat hitting your face when you opened it.
You then put a timer on your phone for 25 minutes.
“What now?” Tobio asks, seemingly eager for his next instruction.
“We just wait for the cupcakes to bake now, it should only take about half an hour.”
“Okay.”
The two of you mutually decided to watch over the recording of his game, as he hadn’t finished it yet.
You watched and listened as he over analyzed every part of the video, making comments on his team as well as the other team.
“Hinata boke’s block sucked.”
“That’s all you have to say??”
“Yea.”
You hear your phone ring, signalling that the cupcakes you had set to bake earlier were supposedly finished. You turned off the alarm and walked over to the kitchen, your boyfriend following behind.
You take out a fork and open the oven, carefully poking the fork inside one of the freshly baked cupcakes.
You slowly slid the fork out and looked at it, there was no cupcake on it, signalling that they were in fact done.
You take out your oven mitts and cautiously slide the tin of cupcakes out of the oven, placing them on the stove but then moving them to the counter after closing the oven.
The sweet, velvety smell of freshly baked goods filled the kitchen air as you took out the grocery bag to get the rest of the ingredients you needed to finish off the cupcakes.
You looked over to your phone and read over the next steps
‘Whilst the cakes are cooling you can make the sugar paste hearts.  Knead the red and white sugar paste icings and to make pink add a small amount of red to some of the white and knead until the colour is uniform, repeat until you have the desired shade of pink. Roll the icings out on a surface dusted with icing sugar until they are about 2-3mm thick, then cut out different sized hearts using heart shaped cutters.  Put them to the side on some baking parchment to set whilst you make the rest.’ step six read.
You got out the red and white icing and did as the instructions said, re-reading them every once and a while to make sure you were doing everything right.
Once you got everything the way you wanted it, you took out the heart shaped cutters, placing them in order from smallest to largest.
“Okay, this is simple. Use these heart shaped cutters to make hearts with the icing sugar, then place them on this, okay?” you pointed to a sheet of parchment paper,
“Oh. Okay.”
You watched him do it for a while before coming to the conclusion that he was doing everything right, so you looked over the next step
‘To make the buttercream, place the butter and icing sugar in a large bowl with the vanilla extract and start to beat together slowly to start with then increase the speed and beat until the buttercream is light and fluffy. You can add a few drops of food colour here if you wish.’
You get out some extra butter and place it in the bowl along with icing sugar, and begin to mix it with the hand mixer, starting slow but increasing the speed every once and awhile.
After about 5 minutes of mixing, the buttercream was ready.
You decided not to add any food colouring, just to keep the red velvet look.
You looked over at Tobio to see he was almost finished with the hearts, seemingly only having a few more to go.
Relieved you only had one more step to go, you scrolled down and read it over.
‘Pipe or smooth buttercream onto the top of each cake using a piping bag or palette knife, then place the rolo on top. Add sweets as extra decorations if desired.’
You got out a plastic bag and spooned the buttercream into it, twisting and cutting the tip of it, making it into a piping bag.
Tobio watched closely as you started icing the still fresh batch of cupcakes, taking note of the slow yet swift circular motion you used to make it into a perfect swirl.
“Can i do something?” he asked, awaiting your next order.
The line ‘Add sweets as extra decorations if desired.’ from the recipe rung in your brain for a moment.
You carefully placed the homemade piping bag on the counter and got out some red and white sprinkles you had gotten, opening them and handing them to him.
“sprinkle these to the top of the cupcakes I add the icing to, not too much though.” you sprinkle some on as an example, giving Tobio the rest of them to continue, to which he nodded.
The two of you continued working your magic, finishing your cupcakes no more than 8 minutes later.
You looked them over to make sure they had enough sprinkles, which to your surprise, they did.
“Wow! These look so good!” you say, taking out your phone to take a picture.
“Can i eat one?”
“Of course! You helped make them, didn’t you?”
“well…..yea.”
“Then have one!! These are ours to enjoy!”
Without hesitation, the both of you each grabbed one of your cupcakes, peeling off the cupcake case and taking a bite
The red velvet flavor was immaculate, truly blessing your taste buds in a way no other food has in a while.
“wOW- these are really good!!” you smiled “thanks for making these with me, Tobio!” you said, tightly hugging him.
“I… w-why wouldn’t I make them with you, dumbass…?”
“Mmm.. i dunno, maybe its cuz you’re always focused on volleyball~”
“Stupid boke.. You know I love you more than volleyball.”

About a week ago I finally finished bookbinding @airdeari‘s beautiful Zero Escape fic The First Nonary Game. It took about a month (between all the waiting for glue to dry and also several days each week when I was unable to work on it), and was so much fun! It’s so satisfying to just... hold this book in my hands. 
Details about how I made it, along with additional photos (and commentary) below the cut.
So I came across this post on Tumblr, which immediately inspired me to try bookbinding myself. I spent a few days watching so many tutorials from the youtube channel linked in the post (I’ll link the specific tutorials I used in this post), and googling how to actually manage to print pages so they form proper signatures, because the inbuilt booklet creator in Word doesn’t exist in my Word apparently so that’s fun.
Anyway, once I started, I asked @airdeari for permission to print and bind his fic, and he immediately said yes, so that was good. Then I spent a good couple of days copying the entire fic into a Word document, and fiddling with formatting so it would look like an actual book (section breaks, page numbers, headers with the fic title on the left page and chapter title on the right page (this took ages to work and I kept on stuffing it up), and making sure things just... looked nice. I added in the art After The War that @keycrash created specifically for the fic (third pic above), and an “afterword” containing credit and links and the author’s notes from AO3 (because even if I’m the only one who will ever see it, it still feels weird to not add the credit stuff in so it’s there).

I then saved the document as a PDF, and used CheapImposter to correctly shuffle (impose, hence “imposter”) the pages so when folded into signatures, each page would be in the correct order. This program was the first free one I could find, and was great because you could specify the number of sheets you want per signature, rather than stuck with a default. I chose to have 11 signatures of 6 sheets of paper, since that was the amount that would have the least blank pages and the end of the book. The file was 261 pages, so with two pages per side, and two sides per sheet, you divide the number of pages by 4 to get 66 sheets of paper
I then printed. There was only one (1) paper jam in the process, which was great. Unfortunately, I realised after I printed that one of the headers for one chapter was wrong (I hadn’t properly disconnected the two chapters), but fortunately that only involved reprinting 4 sheets of paper.

I used the following tutorials to make the books: DIY Textblock, a general “how to make a textblock” tutorial; DIY Kettle Stitch, a specific look at the stitching for a textblock, since the first tutorial doesn’t focus on this; DIY Book Cloth, since I chose to use fabric for my cover; and DIY Hardcover Book, how to put all those pieces together.
So then I started folding all the signatures. I was watching so much Brooklyn Nine-Nine during both the folding and stitching sections, since it was repetitive actions I didn’t need to concentrate on that lasted hours.

It was at this point that I sliced each signature one by one to make the end smoother and less pointy. In future I recommend not doing it at this point - wait until the very end. Instead, move straight onto stitching. 
I don’t have any photos of the stitching portion, since my phone died the morning I started the stitching, and I wasn’t able to replace it until after all the stitching was done. In fact, originally all the photos from before the stitching were lost too. It was only about two days ago that magically the My Photo Stream thing kicked in and brought back all the photos - if it had worked two weeks earlier I would’ve had more. As it is, all photos from September to January are gone forever, unfortunately. But that’s another discussion entirely.

The above is the first book photo on my new phone, so as you can see, all the stitching was completed, the spine was glued, and the purple paper attached. I couldn’t buy two A4 sheets, so instead I had to buy one A3 sheet and cut it in half. Which was difficult cycling home from the city with an A3 sheet that didn’t fit in my bag on account of being A3 and not A4, but oh well.
I don’t have a book press, so I used a pile of DND books and my brother’s weights instead, as shown below.

I then had to re-slice the book after this point bc my first go wasn’t even, on account of slicing each signature separately. Next time definitely I’ll just do it at the end like this. I then also sanded it to make it smoother. It’s still not perfect, but it’s something that’ll take practice and patience so.

Next I made the book cloth, which involves using appliqué sheets to combine cotton fabric and tissue paper. But first I want to talk about the fabric I chose for the cover, because I’m quite proud of it. I spent ages wandering around the shop, trying to find something that fit the feel of the book. Spoilers for the content of the fic if you haven’t read it yet, and also for the source material (999/Zero Escape). I was thinking about some sort of blue swirl thing, because of the Gigantic sinking. I found that, but hesitated because it didn’t fully fit, and my favourite colour is blue so I always pick blue. I also considered flames/fire because of the incinerator thing, but couldn’t find any. I can’t remember if I just couldn’t find any four leaf clover fabric, or if I’ve just since thought about that as a cover. But instead I chose the butterflies below. They fit in several subtle ways that I’m proud of. The colours of blue and pink(/red) matching the receiver and transmitter coding all throughout 999, as well as the moments of purple as well (I don’t think I need to get into that, I’m sure it was analysed to hell and back when the game first came out). The butterflies also point towards the butterfly effect, and in turn the different timelines present in the series. So together it just works. /spoilers over
It’s also just a pretty fabric.

Now the making of the book cloth. I had to make it twice, because I was too impatient the first time, so the iron was too hot and it steamed, which wrinkled and warped the tissue paper, so the fabric was all wrinkly too. The second time took ages and was a worse quality appliqué sheet, but worked well enough anyway.

And then I cut the book board to size, using the measurements from the tutorial video. I’ll repeat them here: front and back cover: width = width of textblock minus 3mm, and height = height of textblock plus 6mm, and spine width = width of textblock spine, spine height = same height as covers

I then glued the board onto the book cloth, and put it under the book press. The dnd books are not large enough to cover the whole thing, and also I really wanted the board to stay flat and not curl, so I grabbed way more dnd books and way more of my brother’s weights. I also accidentally started putting the glue on the wrong side of the board (bc one side is smooth and the other is rough), hence the colour difference as well.

And then the textblock was glued in, and put in my book press for a whole weekend. I added a sheet of paper to absorb the glue so the pages wouldn’t become wrinkly, but instead the sheet I added was fine and every other page in the book is wrinkly. So I dunno what happened there. After the weekend I took it out and looked at it, and then put it back for another week to be sure.

As I was starting I was talking a lot about it, like about the process I had to go through, or how I was going to obtain what I needed, etc. Mum asked if she could read the story. I froze, like a deer in the headlights... because this is a fanfic. She saw my fear and immediately backed down, explaining she only wanted to read it because if the story was that important to me that I was going to literally turn it into a book, she wanted to read it to yknow like know me better or something? Which makes sense. And when I got over my initial reaction, and remembered that indeed it was technically my dad who introduced me to fanfic, and thought about it more, I said okay. Because since the fic is technically a prequel to the first game, and most of the characters are technically OC’s (like, from the first game we know that all eighteen children must exist, but most of them don’t have names or anything so they are effectively OC’s), then knowledge of source material isn’t strictly necessary. This fic can probably be enjoyed on its own. I mean I’ll probably have to explain the concept of morphogenetic fields, and the last four chapters might not make sense? But I’m okay for my mum to read it. So when she’s less busy at work I’m going to download the epub onto her phone for her - we’ll see how it goes.
Anyway, this fic is a masterpiece, extremely well written and I highly recommend it. As said, most of the characters are effectively OC’s, and yet they are all given such rich histories and personalities. All of them have access to the morphogenetic field, so I’m just so glad that @airdeari​ explores nine unique relationships with the field - nine unique sibling dynamics, and esper powers and abilities. It’s just so good.

That’s like asking someone who struggles to drink one glass of water a day, to drink in excess of eight glasses a day. That’s a recipe for failure. Your body and your mind would rebel against this.
To find success, you would encourage the person to begin by drinking perhaps 3 glasses a day, then slowly increasing the amount as they found comfort. Likewise, since you’re probably struggling to sit still at all, I’m simply going to ask you to meditate for only 180 seconds a day. That’s right, 180 seconds a day! Once you realize, “Hey, I can do this!”, naturally and gradually you may begin to add time.

El Gouna Diving – Guide for Scuba Fans
The resort town of El Gouna, 20 kilometers north of Hurghada, was only opened in 1989 (my birth year!), but has managed to become one of the most fascinating places in Egypt - and the scuba diving around El Gouna is breathtaking.

It’s kind of like a mix between Venice and St. Tropez, there are more yachts than cars here and more water canals than streets.

If you’ve been nervous about coming to Egypt, El Gouna is a great start. It’s meticulously clean, quiet and hassle-free.
Besides 3 marinas, plenty of hotels, golf courses, boutiques, and delicious international cuisine, you can also enjoy an amazing time underwater.

Since El Gouna is purpose-built and consists of several artificial lagoons, there is no reef along the beaches of the town itself. By boat, you can reach some fantastic dive sites in the Northern Red Sea though.

El Gouna shares many sites to the south with its neighbor Hurghada including the beautiful horseshoe-shaped reef of Sha’ab El Erg with its spectacular coral gardens and Careless Reef.
From banks to first-class medical facilities, night clubs and restaurants to countless fun activities on land - everyone will find everything they need for a great vacation, whether you’re a diver or not. 
That makes it especially easy when you as a diver go on vacation with non-divers, unlike in some other parts of the world. There’s plenty of stunning nature and diverse activities for everyone.
All the dive sites in El Gouna are only accessible by boat, as opposed to Dahab e.g., where you’ll go mostly on shore dives. You can find my scuba diving guides to Sharm El-Sheikh and Dahab here.  
The good thing about diving in El Gouna is that no matter how much experience you have, there is a variety of dive sites suitable for all levels, from beginners to expert divers.
Note, however, that all sites are weather dependent, especially Abu Nuhas.

Ideally, you have a few days time to make sure you’re able to dive all the best dive sites here even when the weather conditions change some plans.
The dive centers usually pick you up from your hotel around 8 am, depending on how close the dive sites you’re going to explore are to the shore.
The boat trip generally includes lunch after the second dive, and some operators offer snacks like fruit or cake in between dives.
If there are non-divers with you, they can join and just snorkel (at least on most trips, please ask before) and enjoy their time on the sea.
Did you know that so far, more than 400 species of coral have been recorded? And that 20% of the fish population in the Red Sea can not be found anywhere else in the world?
In this guide, I will first give you an overview of the best dive sites in El Gouna. After, you’ll get some more helpful tips regarding the best time to go diving in El Gouna and my recommendation for a safe dive centre.
I have to say, I was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the diving here. I’d just come back from many days of diving in Sharm El-Sheikh as well as a one-week liveaboard from Hurghada to Marsa Alam, covering all the best dive sites of the Red Sea.

Therefore, I wasn’t expecting too much, but I’m so happy I went and got to see dolphins and had lots of other stunning underwater encounters. El Gouna is a great place to go scuba diving!
Below, I’ve listed the 5 best dive sites around El Gouna, in no particular order. It always depends on what type of diving you prefer.
I’ve asked plenty of experienced and local divers and these names are the ones that always pop up. 
The 5 Best Dive Sites in El Gouna
Abu Nuhas
About 2 hours cruising time from El Gouna lies the reef of Abu Nuhas. The Arabic name means "the father of bad luck", and stems from the no less than 7 ships that have hit this reef over the years.
It’s located to the north of Shaidwan Island, close to the Suez canal and usually partially submerged which makes it dangerous for shipping.
The two wrecks Carnatic and Ghiannis D. are the most interesting ones for divers:
The Carnatic is a 90-meter (295 foot) steamer that sunk in 1869. It’s known as the "wine ship" because it carried port wine that you can still see today, sealed with corks. The wreck is broken in two pieces and lies between 16 and 24 meters (50 and 80 feet). Since currents can be strong and stirring up the sand causing low visibility, it’s best to dive the Carnatic in the morning.
The Ghiannis D. is a large, modern freighter with its deepest point at 28 meters (90 feet). It’s very interesting to explore the inside of the stern with its command bridge, residential quarters and engine room. Groupers made the central part of this wreck their home and others, like eagle rays, snappers and sharks frequently pass by.
Siyul Kebira Island (Big Siyul)

Marked by a solar-powered lighthouse, this island can be reached from El Gouna in 1.5 hours and from Hurghada in 2 hours.
It’s one of the most beautiful and least crowded dives in this area and especially suitable for beginners.
You’ll find a lagoon off the southern side that is no deeper than 25 meters (80 feet) and has a reflective coral floor.

Thanks to a lot of light, the corals are very healthy and attract a huge variety of fish: angelfish, red anthias, butterflyfish and lots of others find shelter under the magnificent acropora formations.
Turtles, giant pufferfish, lionfish, giant morays and huge schools of glass fish can often be seen here. Frequently, you’ll also spot sharks dwelling on the bottom.
Shaab El Erg (Dolphin House)
The more than 5 kilometer long reef of Shaab El Erg is horseshoe shaped and lies directly east of El Gouna.
It’s become famous because large numbers of bottlenose dolphins use this location as a shelter and most of the time you will meet them. 
Besides Marsa Alam, here is actually your best chance in the Red Sea to see them in the wild. I did see them the day I went, it was amazing!
At Shaab El Erg you can also often spot turtles, crocodile fish, rays, scorpion fish, napoleons and large schools of goat fish. The corals are very colorful, too.
I was pleasantly surprised to find not only dolphins, but also so many cute tiny sea creatures like nudibranchs, and, my new favorites: christmas trees. Those are worms that come in lots of different colors and just look incredibly beautiful.

Dolphin House is just one of about 7 common dives here, but understandably the most popular one. Poseidon Garden is another option, here you’ll find lots of clams of all sorts in the huge table and brain corals.

A big number of pufferfish likes it here, too, as well as schools of butterfly fish and bannerfish.
When it’s manta season, your best chance to see them is at Manta Point. You may also get lucky and spot a reef shark. Moray Eels and turtles are common inhabitants here.
Umm Gamar Island
Umm Gamar is one of the most popular dive sites in the Hurghada archipelago. It translates to “The Mother of the Moon” because this small island is crescent-shaped when you view it from above. 
The sea bed can be up to 100 meters down. Dives are made on a slope that gently drops from 15 meters (50 feet) to 75 meters (250 feet). 
At this dive site you have a good chance to spot free-swimming moray eels during daytime. You may also encounter large tunas, great barracudas and sometimes an eagle ray.

Umm Gamar is also the kingdom of poisonous fish like scorpionfish, lionfish, turkeyfish and stonefish. 
Always pay attention to your surroundings, try not to brush up against anything and maybe even wear gloves.
Just 5 minutes from here lies Shabrur Umm Gamar which is a great dive site for beginners.
Careless Reef
Careless Reef is the most famous coral reef in the area and the furthest dive site south of El Gouna.
It lies unprotected in the open sea which means that, especially during bad weather conditions, it can be a challenging dive and not necessarily suitable for beginners.

Careless Reef is made up of 2 large pinnacles standing on a plateau that drops off on all sides. While the seabed is no deeper than 15 - 16 meters (50 - 55 feet) between the two coral towers where your boat moors, it suddenly drops 60 meters (230 feet) to the east.
This wall is full of caverns which are the home of lionfish and glassfish. You will see all sorts of marine life at Careless Reef.

Plenty of small coral fish like angelfish and grunts swim between multicolored soft corals, red fire corals, and umbrella acropora.
If you’re lucky, you may even spot a gray shark or whitetip reef shark close to the deep cliff.
What you will definitely see are moray eels swimming fully extended around the reef, the huge creatures are one of the main attractions of the Careless Reef dive site.
Best Season For Diving in El Gouna

The climate in El Gouna is cool in winter (20°C / 68°F) and hot in summer (40°C / 104°F). Water temperatures reach up to 30°C in summer and go down to 20°C in winter.

Generally, I’d say that May to October is the best time to go diving in El Gouna. There’s usually more marine life in summer, including big animals. 
A 5mm wetsuit with a hood is best from the middle of November to the end of March. For the rest of the year, a 3mm wetsuit is sufficient.
Recommendations for Dive Centres
I usually travel solo and I’ve made a few bad experiences, so I know how important it is to find a trustworthy dive center where you do not have to deal with security concerns and, as a woman, harassment.

Unfortunately, though it’s not dangerous, sexual harassment is quite common in Egypt and can be really frustrating.
El Gouna is probably the place in Egypt where harassment occurs the least, it’s a bit like a European town and very relaxed.
Nevertheless, finding a good dive center isn’t always easy.

Canyoning is exploding around the world as a popular way to get outdoors, stay fit, and get out of your comfort zone. And on top of that, it’s awesome fun and you feel like a kid again jumping and sliding in the water!
Whether you have just started canyoning or are looking to get into it, the question almost everyone is always interested in when starting is this...
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO START CANYONING?
It's the question people always ask me. No matter the sport or activity, if people are interested in trying it themselves, they want to know how much it will cost them, among other things of course!
I've made a list detailing all you need to be a self sufficient canyoner. Minus the experience and skills of course, so you should always seek to get proper instruction from experienced canyoners or take a course.
The following items will be listed by importance, based on you starting your canyoning journey with no gear at all. If you are progressing into canyoning from rock climbing, you will have some of the gear already (yay)!
Any non critical safety items, like shoes, bags or wetsuits, are fine to buy second hand. For all safety equipment, buying new is recommended.
With all items, keep an eye out for sales and discounts at outdoor/climbing gear stores. Joining canyoning clubs will often get you discounts year round. Sales can see some items reduced by significant percentages! So make use of them!

1- Canyoning Shoes
Your footwear is important as canyons are often wet and slippery environments. While there are specialist canyoning shoes you can buy, lightweight trainers work perfectly fine in many parts of the world. In Australia where I started canyoning, Dunlop Volleys are very popular for their superior grip on the wet rock.
I have tried expensive canyoning shoes and cheap shoes and now tend to stick with cheap $30 trainers as my expensive pairs last only slightly longer.

2 - Harness
A harness is your attachment point to the rope as you abseil or when you need to connect to an anchor or guideline to stay safe. You can buy a simple climbing harness or use a specialised canyoning harness with vinyl bottom protector. This vinyl sheet stops the abrasion on your wetsuit and harness as you slide and move on rocks, so will make the wetsuit and harness last longer. Either are fine to get.

3 - Helmet
Wearing a helmet is important in canyoning as anything moving about the top of the canyon, like animals for example, can dislodge rocks and other debris. A helmet also protects you from general knocks that can happen. You can use any regular climbing helmet, but make sure it fits and you like wearing it. You will be more likely to always wear it if you like it after all!

4 - Abseil device with a locking screwgate carabiner
When you first start, you can use a climbing belay device if you already have one since many climbers tend to give canyoning a go. If you are starting with no gear at all, getting a figure eight abseil device is the best choice for the flexibility in the later stages of canyoning, and are also quite cheap as well. As you progress, or if you know you like canyoning, the Petzl Pirana is one of the best devices I’ve used and is highly recommended!

5 - Cowstail with 2 locking carabiners (safety)
A cowstail is important in canyoning as your means of connecting to anchors and guidelines to keep you safe, and is also known as your 'safety'. Using a climbing PAS (personal anchor safety) or sling is not recommended as you need the dynamic rope for a cowstail as the chance of slipping and shock loading your safety is higher in a wet canyoning environment.
You can buy a ready made cowstail from Petzl, or make your own (guide coming soon).

6 - Canyoning pack
A regular hiking backpack will work fine to begin with, especially in dry canyons. But the more water a canyon contains, the more important it is to have a canyoning pack with adequate drainage. As you swim and exit the water, everything drains out quickly and the bags don’t weigh you down. My absolute favourite packs are made by Access Gear in New Zealand.

7 - Wetsuit
Canyons are always cold, even on very hot summer days. For any area in the world with water filled canyons, a wetsuit is very important to keep you warm, which in turn, helps you enjoy your day. For many places, a 3mm thick wetsuit will provide enough warmth and can be bulked up with thermals and spray jackets which add warmth. For places like New Zealand and Europe, thicker wetsuits (4mm+) are recommended as the water is very cold. Any type of wetsuit is fine to get (freediving, scuba, surfing) as long as it will keep you warm based on the area you will go canyoning.
To pick the best wetsuit, try on all the different ones you can find, and buy one based on fit. Ensure you can move reasonably well while wearing it, and that it has tight seals on the wrists, ankles and neck. You can also scout your local trading websites, groups and newspapers for people selling wetsuits as these are often quite cheap.

8 - Drybag/waterproof keg
A minimum of 2 drybags, one inside the other and closed independently, are perfect to keep the water away from the things you want to keep dry. Using one is no guarantee of keeping your things dry, as they can eventually break and leak! Alternatively, I love my waterproof keg which is 100% watertight and very durable for when you throw your bag around.

9 - Whistle
A whistle may seem like an odd piece of equipment to take canyoning if you have never done it before, but in water filled canyons it is one of the best ways of communicating over the noise of rushing water and when you cannot see each other. It is important to get a 'ball-less' whistle which also works when wet. Regular 'cheap' whistles can fail when water is inside them.

10 - Carabiners
You can never have enough carabiners! They are useful for all sorts of rigging tasks and for building anchors. To start with, have at least 2 large locking carabiners spare on your harness.

11 - First aid kit & Survival blanket
It’s important to stay safe in the event something were to happen, so always take a first aid kit and a survival blanket. The survival blanket is especially important as canyons are already cold places, and if you were stuck in there for longer than expected, will get really cold! Consider getting a survival bivvy bag, they retail for around $30 AUD and are far warmer than the blanket. The bivvy bag is a great addition to every outdoor adventure anyway, so is well worth investing in!

While the above gear gets you started, you will require a few more items as you progress. These can be bought over time and will depend on your exact canyoning needs. Not everyone will need a rope as friends or partners canyoning together can share this cost.
Here is the complete list if you want to ensure you are well equipped and self sufficient:
12 - Static Rope
Your canyoning rope should be a static rope. Dynamic rope used for rock climbing is NOT SUITABLE. As well as the increased likelihood of damaging it from sharp edges or abrasion due to its increased stretch, it is also more prone to jam on anchors and in between rocks. Canyons are simply too different compared to the rock faces climbers scale.
A big question is always which rope to get? Basic static rope, either 9-10mm is suitable, and focus on one which has a thick sheath and low stretch versus other static ropes. If you want your ropes to last a little longer, canyoning specific ropes are the way to go, my favourite being the Tendon and Kordas brands. There's no need to stress obsessively over which particular rope to get, just make sure its a rated static rope, is 9-10mm in diameter, and is suitable for abseiling. Always buy well known branded ropes from reputable climbing or outdoor stores, and ask for assistance if in doubt.

13 - Ascenders
Ascenders are used to get back up the rope and for rescue hauling. This could be if a rope gets stuck, or if someone is stuck on the rope mid-abseil. Prussic loops can be used initially and should always be carried on your harness in both climbing and canyoning sports anyway, but mechanical ascenders like the Petzl Micro Traxion are invaluable in that rare emergency of if you wish to haul something. It should go without saying, hauling and rescue techniques require training.

14 - Knife
A good, lightweight knife is used to cut webbing for anchors. There should be at least one in your group, but it is recommended each person have their own. In severe emergencies, it may be needed for rescues (training required).

15 - Wetsuit socks
Cold feet can make the rest of the body feel cold. So for places like New Zealand and Europe, wetsuit socks are well worth investing in and will make a massive difference in your overall warmth!

16 - Slings
Slings are used for a variety of tasks and should be carried by everyone. At least one sling is recommended, however, a few extra should be in the group. Webbing material for anchors should also be carried on all trips and may substitute your slings for anchor material.

17 - Extra figure 8 descenders for single rope abseil
If using releasable abseils, a extra figure 8 descender is often used for this. You should always be supervised if learning single rope releasable abseil techniques. A munter mule can also be used which requires one of your carabiners. You should aim to learn both techniques to be able to go canyoning with anyone in the world and be familiar with the procedures.

DOES IT SEEM A BIT EXPENSIVE?
While running the canyoning and abseil events in my adventure group years ago, many people thought this amount of money required to go canyoning is quite substantial. I have always disagreed.
Here’s why.
Many people happily fork out $150 + per month on membership based fitness classes. While they offer a great service, I’ve always seen it as money that could be spent of gear that then opens up many new avenues for adventure and spending time in the outdoors.
And other activities such as boating or scuba diving are far more expensive in both startup and ongoing costs. Even just going canyoning with a commercially run group will usually set you back $150-250+. And that's just for one trip!
Think about this: after 6 months of Crossfit, you would have bought ALL the gear you need to continue canyoning independently for 3 years (approximately) before needing to replace some of the gear for safety. Items such as descenders and carabiners (and all gear made from alloy for that matter) lasts almost a lifetime, unless damaged. Helmets tend to last many years as well.
And as mentioned earlier, you will be able to share gear costs with items such as ropes, among friends and partners, reducing individual costs.
This makes canyoning quite affordable in comparison to many other activities or sports, and also allows you far more freedom to have a variety of adventures and see new places all around the world.
Canyoning can be done in many locations around the world and is FREE to do if you are self sufficient. A bit of gas money to get to the canyoning areas is the only extra ongoing cost and the occasional gear replacement when its worn.
Once you have the gear, get some instruction from some experienced people or mentors, or take a course, and then find some canyons to explore! Taking that first step can be hard, so never be afraid to ask questions no matter how silly they seem.

Yuri on Ice BD audio commentary translation - Volume 2
Translation of the audio commentary of the BD/DVD vol.2! By Mitsurou Kubo and Kouki Uchiyama, voice actor of Yuri Plisetsky. Unlike the commentary of vol.1, that contained lots of things already appeared in countless interviews, this one has some VERY interesting information that I’m sure everyone wants to know. For example, we finally get to know more about Yurio’s family... There really is a lot of stuff regarding Yurio!
The commentary is only for episode 3. Episode 4 has no commentary. In a way it’s still not a full translation because I didn’t really translate every single line, but I think I translated/summarized basically everything they talked about. Therefore, it’s also really long... As in vol.1, since the format is different from normal interview translations, you can find my comments too (mostly in brackets).

-Kubo and Uchiyama actually never really talked before now, because even though they were together at the YOI preview screening Uchiyama went home right after because he was tired. He says that it’s not like he’s weak, but he can’t function when he’s sleepy (he can’t fight sleep basically). Both he and Kubo do not really do any type of sports, and Kubo says she quit softball after 1 week in her first year of middle school. Regarding sport, Kubo says that she has always watched it though, and she has also drawn shonen manga in her career. She says that she likes to observe sport but she doesn’t feel like she wants to participate, though if she were a guy she guesses maybe she would want to participate too.
-Kubo mentions Toyonaga asking her how she felt about him now, so she talks a little about the audition with Uchiyama. Before the actual audition each seiyuu actually sent a tape, and she says she was impressed by the way Uchiyama said the name of his agency Gekidan Himawari and his own name and she already wanted to cast him as Yurio after that. Uchiyama laughs and says it was probably because he sounded unsociable, and he also reveals that he actually recorded that at home with his iPhone so the sound isn’t great in the first place. Apparently, not all agencies record the tapes in studios with proper microphones, lol.
-The above audition talk was actually interrupted once during the scene where Yuuri and Yurio watch Victor skate Eros and Yuuri says the infamous line “he’s so eros I feel like I might get pregnant”. Kubo comments that the line gave rise to criticism, but that “this line was important for the balance within the story” (=“balance” as in “equilibrium”) so that’s why it’s there. (She doesn’t say anything else, therefore I can’t give an exact interpretation of what she means… I have a few ideas but it would be too long to elaborate on that here.)
-Regarding the scene where Victor tells Yuuri that the world still hasn’t seen his real eros (if I say “the scene where he has his face 3mm away from Yuuri’s” you might remember it better). Uchiyama comments “they’re so close (LOL)” and Kubo says that in the YOI LINE stamps (which unfortunately as far as I know are still not available for purchase from overseas) they used that scene for the stamp with the text “tell me, how is the progress?”. She says she hopes that company workers will feel more excited when they ask someone about the progress, lol. (In Japan asking about the progress of someone’s work, “shinchoku” in Japanese, is almost a template line and sometimes when combined with certain pictures may even become a meme or go viral. It is also used a lot by mangaka and doujinshi authors to refer about the progress of what they are drawing, mostly when it’s not progressing.)
-Regarding Yurio. Actually Yurio is the first character that they conceived thoroughly, even before Yuuri. And they came up with the nickname “Yurio” before of his real name. They looked for a Russian name for which they could use the nickname “Yurio”, and that’s how they decided to call him “Yuri”, but Kubo and director Yamamoto have been calling him Yurio from the start. In the series the name Yuri comes first and he only starts to be called Yurio from episode 2, so there were fans who were actually upset and felt sorry for him because his real name Yuri was “stolen” (as in that in the series other characters aren’t calling him with his real name). Kubo says that she’s a bit sorry that some people are feeling like that but that she’s also very happy that Yurio managed to become such a fascinating and loved character that viewers will feel upset for.
-Uchiyama asked Kubo who created the story exactly. She replies that she and director Yamamoto created it together, but that the first one who had a clear vision of it was Yamamoto. Then they had to flesh it out in detail and create all the characters in a way that they would feel realistic, which was a lot of work. For Kubo it’s the first time that something she draws is turned into an anime, so before YOI she had never drawn something thinking that the characters would speak the lines out loud. After watching the anime dubbed with Uchiyama’s voice she was glad that they had chosen him for the role of Yurio.
-Regarding Yurio training at the temple. They actually don’t say much, but Kubo laughs commenting that it’s “abuse” and Uchiyama says that they recorded a lot of different patterns for that scene. From that, the talk shifts to the recording.
-Kubo asks Uchiyama what kind of conversations they had with the sound director Shimizu. Uchiyama says that actually he has known him since Uchiyama was in his last year of elementary school (he also used to be a child actor, in fact his first important role as a seiyuu was Roxas of Kingdom Hearts II when he was still 15 years old) and that he’s a passionate person. When giving instructions to voice actors he’s not the type that will speak in detail like “say this line this way”, but he talks more about the spiritual/mental side of characters, like “this character is this kind of person”, therefore their conversations can get pretty long. Kubo comments that it must be difficult to act out the role of a character for an original anime, without any previous work to use as a reference like in adaptations of already existing manga, also because seiyuu were just given the script without much detail about how the scenes were created. Kubo also comments that she was very impressed by the voices of the crowd (usually the voices of the crowd are created on the spot by the seiyuu who are participating in the recording that day), because they had to think about lines that spectators would actually say without anything written in the script.
-Regarding the manga storyboard (called “name” in Japanese). Uchiyama says that it was really interesting and asks Kubo whether they have any plans to publish it, but she says that they don’t, because it wasn’t something created to be published (I hope they change their mind on that one day, I’m willing to pay some good money to read it, lol). Uchiyama believes that it was good enough to show it to people, and that in a way he’s very happy and feels lucky because he had the chance to read it. Kubo says that she mostly just drew what she wanted to draw, and asks him whether the storyboard helped him shape his role. He replies that it helped him a lot, and that even though of course he’s playing Yurio because it’s his job, the storyboard stimulated his motivation a lot because he liked seeing how the character came alive with his voice.
-Regarding the relationship between Yuuri and Yurio. The waterfall scene is what triggered this topic. Kubo mentions that from the waterfall scene you can see the bond between Yuuri and Yurio developing. She says that one of the things that made her happy to have chosen Uchiyama for Yurio’s role is that he is able to express Yurio’s slightly twisted personality in a natural way, without making it look like he might have some sort of dark past. She also thinks that the anime is done better than her storyboard and you can clearly see that Yuuri and Yurio develop a kind of friendship, like they are rivals but they also start getting along. They are not that kind of rivals that are hostile with each other. Uchiyama says that, looking at the scene during the Grand Prix (the tournament in Russia) where Yurio sees Yuuri screw up his program, almost cheers on him and is stopped by JJ, he realized that Yurio does want to win against Yuuri, but also feels that it’s pointless to win if Yuuri is not using 100% of his skills. Yurio wants them to compete against each other at the best of their ability, clash at 120% of their strength and then he wants to win by going still one step ahead of that. Uchiyama comments that seen from the eyes of an amateur it’s like a “clash of gods” and that he was impressed by Yurio’s mentality. Kubo also says that in figure skating athletes do not really fight 1 vs 1 but it’s more like everyone is trying to give their best performance. Apparently having someone who is very skilled close to you is one of the most motivating things and rivals are also a way to motivate oneself to get better, to give one’s best. Rivals are more like “fellow competitors”, so most skaters tend to get along well with each other. That’s why she thought it would be nice to have Yuuri and Yurio develop that kind of relationship too, and she thinks that in the anime, with the voices and all, it shows much better than in her storyboard.
-Regarding announcer Morooka in Onsen on ICE. They comment that Katou, the person voicing Morooka, is so good that you would never think he’s a normal person working for a company (not a voice actor). They laugh saying that the part with him looks like “Get Sports” (a sport documentary program of TV Asahi), and Kubo says that actually she wanted to include a Get Sports parody where they make a special feature on Yuuri and interview him but it didn’t fit in the episode and so they gave up. She went as far as to take screencaps of the program to make the TV screen look similar, however the storyboard was already huge and they really had to cut any second or line that was not indispensable. Basically there is nothing pointless in the episodes. Actually, in the storyboard Yurio’s mother dashes to Japan from Russia to see the match (Onsen on ICE), but there wasn’t enough time to add this part in the anime.
-They have a parenthesis regarding Yuuko’s nosebleed. They comment that it’s amusing, and Kubo says that they originally wanted to use it in the LINE stamps too, but since the regulation forbids stamps that contain any kind of violence it couldn’t go through because she’s bleeding, lol.
-Back to the topic of Yurio’s mother. Kubo has pictured Yurio’s mother as a former Russian idol (EDIT: She says “like xxx, with sauvage” where xxx is a name that starts with “Ta” and the rest is bleeped out, but she probably refers to t.A.T.u.! Thank you @nemesisfall for the input!! “Sauvage” is a hairstyle, permed hair with loose curls, that was also popular in Japan especially in the 80s), who retired from show business early, gave birth to a child at a young age, and the child skates, but there isn’t any clear mention of the father in the story. Yurio was mostly raised by his grandpa in Moscow, however to improve his skating skills he moved to St. Petersburg to train under Yakov at the sport club there. She says that she likes this kind of character who loves his grandpa. Unfortunately since it didn’t fit (because there wasn’t enough time) in the anime the part with Yurio’s mother was cut from Onsen on ICE and so she wasn’t mentioned afterwards either. But Kubo was sure that he could become stronger even without inserting the part about his mother. Uchiyama comments that he would like to see more about all the characters’ background. (To sum things up: no details about Yurio’s father so it’s not sure whether his mother raised him alone or not, but since apparently he spent a lot of time with his grandpa there is a chance that either his mother or both his parents worked the whole time and couldn’t spend time with him, though it’s not like his mother hates him or he was abused, and there is also a high chance that he’s an only child)
-Uchiyama asks Kubo about the schedule of a mangaka. She says that it mostly depends on whether she has assistants coming over or not. When the assistants are coming there is an exact schedule, like they come over 3-4 days a week at 10:00 in the morning, work there for 10-12 hours and then leave. During the other days she works on the “name” (storyboard/draft) of the manga and she might take some time to rest. For YOI she created all the storyboard alone (it’s not like it was cleaned and inked like for a manga that is published on a magazine so she didn’t have assistants coming over), and sometimes she had slumps and felt bad because the production staff was working super hard on the anime and she wasn’t doing anything. She said that it was like being confined in her house, she almost never went out and she happened to spend over one week without talking to anyone, but since she appears in a TV program (not YOI related) about once a month there was this day where she had to speak a lot after days of not speaking at all. She says she was really happy when she could go drink together with the voice actors after the TV Asahi event (I assume it’s the preview screening of the anime that was held before it actually aired, and it’s when Uchiyama went home right after the event, so I think “the voice actors” are Toyonaga and Suwabe). She also says that she never drinks alcohol when she’s working.
-Kubo says she was amused by Murase (seiyuu of Kenjirou Minami) and Uchiyama’s talk in “Yuri on Radio”, where they said that they went drinking together and Murase did the voice of a nasty woman. Uchiyama explains that when they go drink together late at night Murase tends to have a very high-pitched voice and can perfectly play women, so he randomly asked him to play the role of a nasty deceitful woman just for the laughs. And Uchiyama played a guy who is deceived by the woman. (By the way, according to a recording report from Otomedia Plus, in episode 10, when they were recording the voices of the crowd, Murase was put together with the female seiyuu, so actually there’s a woman in the crowd voiced by him, lol)
-Regarding figure skating programs. When Yuuri is skating Eros Kubo comments that it’s a program that will be shown many times but every time it’s shown in a different way. Uchiyama asks whether it’s interesting to watch how the same program by the same athlete evolves in the course of various matches, like in the GP series, and Kubo confirms that it’s extremely interesting. She says that it may also look completely different depending on what athletes are participating in a tournament and their skating order, like the same musical can look totally different with a different cast of actors. It also changes depending on the skater’s conditions and it evolves with time. Usually, if an athlete skates the program too well in their first match, people even get worried because they wonder whether they will be able to keep up the pace until the end. But this “human side” of figure skating is something that makes her want to cheer on the athletes.
-Regarding Yurio and his relationship with other characters. The time Yurio spent in Hasetsu is a very important memory to him, that will keep on giving him support. Kubo asks Uchiyama whether he liked playing Yurio, and he says that he really enjoyed playing him. He also says that he had read all of Kubo’s manga “Moteki” and the first time he saw a picture of Yurio he reminded him of a female character from Moteki (he doesn’t mention who). During the scene where Yurio leaves the rink to go back to Russia after Yuuri wins Onsen on ICE, Uchiyama comments that you see him talk with Yuuko here and then in later episodes they can be seen exchaging messages with their smartphones. Kubo says that the scene looks like he’s going back alone, but actually Yuuko drove him to Fukuoka airport with her car. Regarding how he was able to buy a plane ticket, she says “please do not think too much about that”, lol. Uchiyama laughs and comments that maybe Yuuko helped him buy it. They also say that Yurio has many interesting female characters around him, like Lilia and Mila. Uchiyama is amused by the fact that Popovich appears in the background a few times in the scenes where Yurio and Mila are shown, and says that it’s nice to rewatch the series because after knowing all the characters you can spot them when they appeared in the early part of the show and were still unknown. Same goes for the ending footage, that you might see in a different light after getting to know the characters.
-Regarding the last exchange that they have during the ending, I will report it exactly as it was because it’s hard to summarize, lol. Kubo: Ahh, and to think it’s ending in December… Uchiyama: I can’t believe it either. K: Cos you know, I really really want to write at least the story in St. Petersburg (LOL). U: So basically your head is still full of Yuri on Ice stories that you want to write, right? K: The director and I very much think so, but I don’t know what will happen. I mean, it’s so hard to create an anime, isn’t it? U: Sure it is. K: At worst we might just do it in the form of street theater (LOL). (She says “kamishibai”, it’s a traditional Japanese performance where a person narrates a story while showing it with a series of pictures, like a narrated slide show) U: Street theater (LOL). K: We can tour the country (LOL). It’s not even like a live reading play (LOL). U: Street theater (LOL). K: Like, “once upon a time, in St. Petersburg, there was Yurio…”. We can do it, I’m sure (LOL). U: You know, I genuinely want to see all those stories, as a viewer. K: But seriously, now the show has such a good reputation overseas. And in Japan too. U: I hear that lots of real skaters are watching it too.
And then the ending is over and they don’t have any time left, so they just do the final greetings. I would REALLY like to see whatever story they want to write, any form is fine, but of course I do hope they can do a second season of the anime… The sales of the BDs/DVDs (which are basically what can influence the future of an anime the most) have been going great so far, therefore I believe there is hope.

Hair Clippers Numbers Guide
The world of barbering can be daunting to a newcomer, whether you’re looking to cut your own hair for the first time, or you’re simply looking for a better understanding of what the guard sizes mean, I’m here to help. I’m here to break it all down so you can have the confidence you need to get (or give) a killer cut.
If you’re looking to move past your basic “three on the top, two on the sides,” that you have said for as long as you can remember, this guide will comfortably move you past that. Next time you’re at the barber you’ll be able to knowledgeably make the call to get the perfect cut.

The Basics
First, let’s get the basics out of the way. Most guys tend to know that the smaller the number, the less hair (or the closer the cut), they’re going to end up with on their head. These infamous numbers actually refer to the clipper guard sizes, with the number printed on the guard itself. Most sets of clippers come with 8 guards, which dictate the amount of hair removed when clipped. The biggest brands (Oster, Wahl, and Andis) use 1/8 inch increments between guard sizes. As an example, a #1 haircut will use the #1 guard and leave 1/8 inch of hair, whereas a #3 will use the #3 guard and leave 3/8 inch of hair. The only exception to this rule is when asking for a #0, which doesn’t use a guard at all, and cuts directly with the clippers leaving about a 1/16 of hair left, looking almost shaved – a buzzcut. You’ve just learned enough to get yourself into trouble but that’s a good overview of the basics. Later I’ll include images that show each different look, and explains the differences between the manufactures, as that’s where things get complicated.
Hair Clippers Numbers Guide
First, let’s lay out all the haircut options and the clipper guard sizes just as a point of reference:
#0 cut (no guard) — 1/16 inch (1.5mm)
#1 cut — 1/8 inch (3mm)
#2 cut — 1/4 inch (6mm)
#3 cut — 3/8 inch (10mm)
#4 cut — 1/2 inch (13mm
#5 cut — 5/8 inch (16mm)
#6 cut — 3/4 inch (19mm)
#7 cut — 7/8 inch (22mm)
#8 cut — 1 inch (25mm)
Note: I’m rounding to the nearest significant figure for mm conversions. It’s worth mentioning that many report these as simply 3 times multiples (3, 6, 9, 12, etc.) which isn’t technically correct at higher multiples. This is because of the uneven conversions eventually rounding up entire mm lengths. That is to say, 3/4 is exactly 19.05mm rather than 18mm that 3*6 would suggest.
Usually to get ones desired look it will take a number of clipper guards, and using the right set of clippers for the job. This is why I strongly recommend everyone who walks into a barber has a good understanding of what they’re asking for, and what different options exist.
Now we’ve covered the bare basics it’s worth getting into brand-specific information, and what the resulting cuts look like. The brand specific information is mostly geared toward those who are cutting their own hair, cut others, or are investigating the process. The Different Looks of Each Cut
Number 0 Haircut
          Because a number 0 haircut uses no guard and cuts directly with the blade you’re getting a very close 1/16 inch (1.5mm) cut which leaves almost no hair, as shown in image pictured above.
Number 1 Haircut
          A number 1 haircut uses the closest guard possible. This cut isn’t hugely different from a number 0 in terms of look or feel.
Number 2 Haircut
            A number 2 haircut is still in the buzzcut territory but leaves the scalp covered and works well for those with thicker hair.
Number 3 Haircut
            A number 3 guards trim your hair down to 3/8 inch which tends to be used for a longer buzzcut (often called a burr cut). It’s also used to trim down the sides to a shorter length while retaining a longer length up top.
Number 4 Haircut
            The number 4 cut leaves your hair 1/2 inch long. It’s about  the longest cut you can get that still vaguely resembles a buzzcut area. A number 4 starts to give a more brushed or crew cut look. These cuts work well for both long and short hair and are an easy choice for many that want short hair, but don’t want anything too short.
Number 5 Haircut
            The number 5 haircut gives you a 5/8 inch look. The #5 is mostly used for tapering and styling rather than anything simpler like a buzzcut.
Number 6 Haircut
            Much like the number 5, the number 6 is mostly used for layering and styling. It’s a reasonable length that rivals what many could do with a pair of scissors if they were looking for a shorter scissor cut.
Number 7 Haircut
          A number 7 cut is a 7/8 inch cut which is often used for styling for men with thick hair. The #7 guard is normally used in conjunction with a smaller size guard to fade hair on the sides for a more styled look.
Number 8 Haircut
            Lastly, the number 8 guard is the largest commonly included with a pair of clippers and cuts hair to an inch in length. Similar to the number 7, it’s mostly used to trim the hair on top with a smaller guard being used on the sides.
Oster Blades and Guards
Oster is the first brand I’ll cover and easily holds their own with quality. Their blades are made of carbon steel with renowned levels of quality assurance and testing. Any Oster blade should last, and stay sharp for a good while too.

Oster Clipper Guard Sizes
Oster’s clipper guards work a treat too and work with the same sizes available as standard in the first chart. Commonly people ask if they can get Oster magnetic guards which isn’t something they produce. Andis’ magnetic guards work fine with the Oster Fast Feed clippers and make the cutting way easier in my experience.
Andis Blades and Guards
With some of the most popular products in the industry, some might wonder why, and for good reason, they’re high quality. Their magnetic combs are at the top of that perch, they make cutting hair easier, they’re durable, they fit well, and as I mentioned earlier they fit other clippers (like Oster’s Fast Feed). Andis splits them into two groups, the five short guards, and the four longer ones. Below are the guards and their respective sizes.

Andis Blades
Like the aforementioned combs, Andis also make some incredible blades. They’re most well-known for their ceramic blades which keep cool during blade operation. They’re rated at up to 70% cooler than standard blades, I don’t know the exact number but I know from experience they’re cool. Ceramic is also incredibly durable, making them incredibly long-lasting. That said, even their traditional UltraEdge blades will still hold up in comparisons with any good blade.
These detachable blades fit most of the popular Andis clippers, and even the Oster 76 clippers too making them an all-around great choice when looking for blades. Wahl Guards and Clippers
Wahl is where I first got my start and is the brand I first got interested in. (I’m pretty impartial at this point though, I see benefits with each of the big three main product lines.) Their product line is pretty complicated with many different types of guards. Fortunately, their guards and sizes are easy to understand though. Below is a chart for their guards.

Wahl offers two main types of combs, plastic (colored or your standard black) and then also a range of metal guards. The metal guards a little more pricey but offer a consistently better cut, especially for close fades. The colored combs work well if you’re cutting hair for friends and/or family and easily want to differentiate between combs. Don’t care about that? Maybe you’re cutting more professionally? Or looking for more style? For situations like these, the standard black combs are your best bet.
The metal guards are even more premium. As stated before, they’re a little more pricey but with a cut that consequently fits the price. If you’re really getting into barbering, whether for yourself or others, this is what you want to invest in if you’re in the Wahl camp.

Curing & smoking (& sundry other diverse arcana)
In my quest to learn everything there is to know about the art of charcuterie (an impossible task, I know, but this is after all, a voyage of mystery & discovery, not a race to finish at some well defined ending), I’m constantly reading different guides and recipes and books and articles.
One of the ones that I keep going back to, reading & re-reading it constantly, is “Curing & Smoking” by Steve Lamb, of River Cottage fame. It’s detailed, passionate, fun, informative and pretty much a (secular) bible for people interested in the craft and history of charcuterie.
So, the chance to spend a day learning at the feet of the master, with Steve at River Cottage HQ in Dorset came up and I jumped at the opportunity.
After a bone-shaking trip down to the farm in the back of a tractor-drawn trailer (the normal short meadow walk being blocked by a large bull), the day started with a small but gorgeous snack of “face bacon*” & maple syrup, on small Scots pancakes along with a glass of Kingston Black apple brandy.

* And what is “face bacon, I hear you ask? Here’s a great description from Chef Phillip Lopez, of Root in New Orleans (a restaurant that wasn’t there when we were working in the Crescent City, but reason enough on its own to go back. I’m going to ask if he’d let me apprentice with him):
I gotta say the face bacon. By far, it’s my favorite. It was a crazy idea I had before coming to Root, and I started experimenting with the face. I spent a long time defining this technique. And we utilize the the face bacon in different ways. Of course, it’s on the board, but when we were serving marrow bones, we would make a face bacon jam to go with it. And we always have scraps leftover from slicing, so I asked the bartender for ideas. We came up with this – well, we would render the fat from the face bacon and add it to Bulleit bourbon and sous vide it for 24 hours. Then we’d freeze it, so the fat could be easily separated. Take the fat off, and we have face bacon bourbon! Voila, face bacon manhattan. It’s a little smokey and it’s pretty freaking awesome. The demand for it is so high that we’re making like five bottles of it a week.
And so to work…
A delightful piece of meat, half of a 9 month old, rare breed Oxford Sandy & Black (I’ll be writing up a history of this great breed shortly, for the History pages) is what we all soon started working on. Remember that commercial breeds go to be butchered at only five months. Madness.
Bred on their farm, slaughtered close by a day or so earlier, this couldn’t have been more local or fresher. A lovely piece of meat, with great fat depth & even marbling (as we were to find out) although not quite at the Wagyu beef level but then this is a pig after all, not a cow that’s been raised for close to 36 months before being slaughtered. Anyway, enough, I’ll be doing a piece on Wagyu beef elsewhere at some point.

In the background, you’ll see (a) Steve in whites and (b) the meat grinder. The former started work straight away, the latter only came into play an hour or so later. With only half a dozen other people there, it made for a great atmosphere and gave everyone the chance to practice their knife & butchery skills when it came to breaking down the carcase.
Nothing was going to be wasted – “respect the animal” in action.
So with some cursing (certainly on my part when I was asked to remove the skin from a huge side) and much furious knife wielding & regular sharpening by everyone, the carcase was broken down, cut by cut, under Steve’s guidance.
Remembering that “nothing wasn’t to be used”, meant that whilst none of us could claim to have reached Master Butcher standards at any point, that wasn’t important. What was important was that we learnt what the cuts & muscles were and that every piece of meat & bone was to be utilised, either by us in the charcuterie or by the chefs for stock & sausages.
I’ve no ‘photos of the resultant pieces, sorry, far too busy listening to Steve describe what we’d be doing with them later.
We ate everything that we worked on — thank the deity that I’m not doing this course every day or I’d be the size of the side of a house within a week.
This rather attractive grouping of salami was produced by everyone. The first one was actually produced by me, although how you’d know, I’ve no idea.

Salami. That’s it.
And here, courtesy of Steve & River Cottage, is how we went about the first part of this process:
To get the right texture, it’s very important that the back fat is diced extremely finely. It does take time, but it’s worth it. It’s a good idea to freeze the fat first, which makes it easier to cut.
Ingredients: Makes about 15 salamis
6 metres of beef runners or beef middles
2.6 kg lean pork from the shoulder, minced on an 8mm plate
400g back fat, cut into 2mm dice
1-2 cloves of garlic, peeled and very finely chopped
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1-2 glasses of red wine
60g salt
Malt vinegar and olive oil, to finish
Before you get to work on your salami mix, put the beef runners to soak in a large bowl of fresh water. Slosh them about to rinse off the salt then leave them to soak overnight. When they are slippery, flexible and completely rinsed of salt, they are ready to use.
Mix together all the other ingredients (except the vinegar and oil) – with your bare (but clean) hands, if you like – so that the salt and fat are well distributed throughout the mix. Load up your sausage-making machine with the mix, slide a length of beef runner on to the nozzle, and tie the end of the casing into a knot, as you would tie a balloon. Then tie a short length of butcher’s string in an ordinary granny knot inside the knot. Make a loop with the string so you can hang the sausage up, and tie it again with a second knot in the same place. Stuff the casing with the mix until you have a filled a length of 40–50cm. As you work use a very sharp pin to prick the casing all over. This allows any air to escape and ensures you get a nice, tight salami. Cut off the runner, leaving enough unfilled runner at the end to tie another knot.
Hold up the filled casing with the knotted end at the bottom and squeeze the mixture down the casing gently, so it is nice and tight. Prick it again with the pin as you do this. Then tie another knot in the top of the runner and make another loop with string, just as you did at the other end. The compacted sausage, tied at both ends, will now be 30–40cm long, although you can make shorter ones if you like. It’s useful to have two people on the job for an efficient production line: one to do the filling and cutting, the other to do the knots and hang up the filled runners.
The salamis should be hung individually by the string loops in a cool, well-ventilated place where the temperature is not likely to rise above 12°C. Make sure they are not touching a wall, or each other, and they are not in direct sunlight. Over the coming weeks, a number of moulds, ranging in colour from grey-green to white and even orange, may form on the casings. None of these should worry you but you can wash them off with a cloth soaked in malt vinegar if you wish.
The salami may take anything from 4 to 10 weeks to mature, depending on the conditions and, indeed, on how you like them. They can be tried as soon as they are fairly firm to the touch and dry-looking, but they will continue to dry out and harden until they are practically rock hard. When they reach the stage you like, wipe off any mould from the outside with a cloth soaked in vinegar. Rub the salami with a little olive oil and transfer it to the fridge. Serve your salami in slices 2–3mm thick. If you prefer, peel off the ring of casing from each slice before eating, although it is perfectly safe to eat.
The rest of the day was a whirlwind of various cuts, techniques (inc. brining, dry rubbing hot & cold smoking) and flavours and textures. I’d be typing for another day or so to cover everything that Steve showed us. Suffice to say that you need to (a) buy his book (and he signed my copy, that I’d brought along that day, with a smile) or (b) book a day on his course. Or (c) — which is what I’d really recommend — both of these options.

He’s a hugely passionate, committed and interested tutor and I can’t praise him too highly or underplay just quite how much I enjoyed this day. I came away even more confident that charcuterie is what I love doing and also that there’s nothing to be scared of in either the techniques or in recipes given — just a case of practice, practice, practice and experiment, experiment, experiment. Think of your own additions to the the mixes and rubs and brines and see what they do. They may well work.
And finally? Finally, a shot from inside their temperature & humidity controlled hanging store. If this doesn’t have you drooling over the page and wanting to do your own charcuterie, then nothing will.

Likewise, since you’re probably struggling to sit still at all, I’m simply going to ask you to meditate for only 180 seconds a day. That’s right, 180 seconds a day! Once you realize, “Hey, I can do this!”, naturally and gradually you may begin to add time.

To find success, you would encourage the person to begin by drinking perhaps 3 glasses a day, then slowly increasing the amount as they found comfort. Likewise, since you’re probably struggling to sit still at all, I’m simply going to ask you to meditate for only 180 seconds a day. That’s right, 180 seconds a day! Once you realize, “Hey, I can do this!”, naturally and gradually you may begin to add time.

Once you realize, “Hey, I can do this!”, naturally and gradually you may begin to add time.

Let me tell you something my friend, join the club. Millions of people all across the planet suffer from the syndrome “I-Can’t-Sit-Still-itis”. We live in a society that has us over-stimulated on every level…cell phones, iPads, computers, tvs, billboards, car radios and the list goes on. That���s why we’re going to start you with baby steps. I’m not going to ask you to sit for 10, 20 or 30 minutes when you first begin. That’s like asking someone who struggles to drink one glass of water a day, to drink in excess of eight glasses a day. That’s a recipe for failure. Your body and your mind would rebel against this.
To find success, you would encourage the person to begin by drinking perhaps 3 glasses a day, then slowly increasing the amount as they found comfort. Likewise, since you’re probably struggling to sit still at all, I’m simply going to ask you to meditate for only 180 seconds a day. That’s right, 180 seconds a day! Once you realize, “Hey, I can do this!”, naturally and gradually you may begin to add time.

Let me tell you something my friend, join the club. Millions of people all across the planet suffer from the syndrome “I-Can’t-Sit-Still-itis”. That’s like asking someone who struggles to drink one glass of water a day, to drink in excess of eight glasses a day. That’s a recipe for failure. Your body and your mind would rebel against this.
To find success, you would encourage the person to begin by drinking perhaps 3 glasses a day, then slowly increasing the amount as they found comfort. Likewise, since you’re probably struggling to sit still at all, I’m simply going to ask you to meditate for only 180 seconds a day. That’s right, 180 seconds a day! Once you realize, “Hey, I can do this!”, naturally and gradually you may begin to add time.

“Due to my mommy and work schedule I have been using your 3-minute meditations in the morning, mid day or at night. Ideally the morning is best, but if it was a high intensity day, night is amazing to wind down with a 3MM. Mid day actually has been great for me too, if business just gets a lil hectic. It’s good to take that time to release and regroup.

Q. Will this program work if I’m in my 40’s and 50’s?A. Yes, the beautiful part about this program is that it works at any age.
Q. I’ve been meditating for years, just not consistently. Will this be for me? A. YES!!! The real benefits of meditation are felt and experienced through daily meditation. I intentionally picked a length of time for the meditation that anyone can fit into their days, whether you’ve been at this before, but it didn’t stick or this is your first time.
Q. What if I already have a consistent meditation practice? A. That is completely fine. Consider this another option for when you are time crunched… kind of like meditation-to-go!
Q. I’m not religious. Does this technique have any particular religious affiliation? A. This practice is not affiliated with any religion. It is for anyone… whether you’re religious, spiritual or anywhere in between.
Q. Is 3 minutes of meditation really enough to get results?A. Absolutely!!! Just look at some of the testimonials to hear about the results people got whether or not they had meditated before or had never tried it. The best part about it being 3 minutes is that it allows you to create a HABIT. What most people experience is that they eventually, if not very quickly, love the feeling and they naturally want to sit longer. 🙂
