Tbh I’d love to get my PhD and potentially teach at a university someday, but when I do, please remind me to stay humble and not to be a hardass about my grading or my deadlines. Not in the sense of not holding students to a high standard but specifically in the sense of being rigid and inflexible or creating a system of grading/assignments that doesn’t allow a potential to adapt where and when it’s needed. I wanna help students learn and gain something from courses I teach but I don’t want them to have to stress needlessly if they need accommodations.

#thinking out loud #it’s a lot to try to articulate but I genuinely do think more flexible deadlines/assignment periods can actually promote student success #classes where discussion formats have been less strict are usually the places I see more in depth impassioned insightful discussions #and *active* engagement between classmates. and between students and professors.#more flexible deadlines or assignment periods can give students more autonomy and put them in charge of managing themselves #i want to be a professor who remembers students have other classes and commitments and personal struggles #and I want to be a professor that my students feel they can come to when they need support #I’ve seen enough class setups and enough types of students and types of assignments #that I just think…. being rigid doesn’t always work #again. that scratches the tip of the iceberg of my thoughts on this it’s a broad explanation #but. i am caffeinated and full of thoughts and dopamine. and I want to write a syllabus rn #genuinely I don’t know when it’s likely that I’d be teaching a college course but I’m so tempted to write a mock-up of a syllabus #i might do it. like for fun. idk.#cape town rambles
