Wait... so Pran says "It's hot" after getting a photo of Pat to which Pran's mum says he should "blow it first". I mean, I know I easily hear innuendos but I can't be the only one to notice this?!

Oh the happiness when Pran says he's messaging a 'friend'.

And then the heartache when Dissaya says Pran can date anyone but Pat or Pa.

Pran letting his Nanon show through at 6:07 in part 1 - with his head-twitch (you can see Nanon doing it in interviews and events etc).

Pa and Ink!! That's it. That's the comment.

I love the differences between Pat and Pa's sides of the room, and that Pa got the full bed whereas Pat is just on the mattress on the floor.

Remember what I was saying about the show manipulating us in ep 4 with Pat, Ink, and Pran? Well, they're doing it again with Pa, Ink, and Wai - having Jimmy do the voiceover for the note Pa receives with the peer mentee gift. I mean, it could never have been him because he's not in her faculty...but still, it made us question whether we were going to get InkPa.

SEE WHAT i MEAN BY THE SHOW USING THE PRODUCT PLACEMENTS TO DRIVE THE STORY?! BECAUSE WE GOT FERAL HOE PRAN EXPERTLY FLIRTING WITH THE "Can you?" AND PUPPY EYES IN THE PRINTER SCENE.

Don't we all agree that Pran basically confesses to Pat with the curry - he said he wanted to cook the dish for the person he liked and then offered a spoonful to Pat - he effectively did cook the curry for Pat it's just that Pat chose not to eat it. These boys 😄 smh

I love Pa's friends and want to see them in another show.

With the way Wai is recounting the synopsis for the Riam/Kwan play, you'd think he'd be a bit more sympathetic towards Pat and Pran.

Also, library scene my beloved (pfp ftw!). And Pran in a yellow shirt whilst thinking about his and Pat's flirting (they're so happy!), and then Pran in a blue shirt amongst a sea of red in the lecture hall. AND THE MINT GREEN BOOK DIVIDERS. God the design.

Oh Oh and the LIGHTING! I forgot how this show had used light and shadow throughout this ep to emphasise how Pran is "still closed off, not yet ready to be open and honest with Pat, needing the bet still as a premise to ‘date’ Pat...whereas Pat is ready and has always been ready...and it’s only right at the end, when Pran has decided he’s also ready to leave the bet behind and get on the same page as Pat, that he becomes fully illuminated."

Really, show me another series that is doing product placement like Bad Buddy. THE BOTTLE 'SPONGE BATH'! Please!

But also knowing that Pat has pretty much confessed to Pran through his audition monologue kind of makes this scene hit different. Yes, they're having a flirting competition, doing things with Ink and Wai that they want to be doing with each other, but poor Pat has already said he wants to end the bet but Pran is continuing as normal.

Micellair my beloved. Pat says he doesn't always come to play but that is what he actually does. He tried to lighten Pran's mood by playing. He puts paint on Pran's cheek so that he can clean his face... I mean, it works! Until Wai shows up... And they're still telling each other to 'say it first' but Pat's already confessed! istg asfagad;lkgjadjh;kjg

Yes! I love fierce Pran. He doesn't stand for any shit. 👏🏼

Also, you know @thiansong's post about Pran being so Loved? Well, I just realised that Chart was implying that Toto would have to chose between him or Pran and that, if so, Toto would chose Chart... But actually he doesn't because Pran stays and Chart goes. Pran is so LOVED!

Oh... Pran then repeats Pat's "I'm not always playing games with you" on the rooftop...

When I first watched the rooftop scene, I thought Pat was being stupid by preventing Pran from confessing but in hindsight he is entirely valid since Pran was doing it because he needed Pat to act in the play. It took me while to understand.

Forever May my beloved. Like with the instrument shop in ep 5, the editing of this scene with this music is inspired! (Again, a scene that feels 'danced' is one that includes an instrument.)

It's interesting that the other actors who auditioned played the role of Kwam - the original male character - whereas Pat played the role of Riam - the traditional female character - reminiscent of the bus stop scene when he played the girlfriend. Thus the show, yet again, is subverting the seme/uke/wife/husband tropes.

And of course in his confession Pat/Kwam talks about not playing games anymore. (And then I'm thinking about that post by @grapejuicegay along with @casualavocados about how the show does things in threes - introduces the idea [micellair scene], increases the tension [rooftop scene], and brings it to a conclusion [confession scene] 🤯)

Sorry, there are a few split second frames that shouldn't be in here, but I have to actually get up this morning, so this is what you get 🙇‍♀️

Honestly, except for scenes the episode trailers have included, I'm not in the least bit sure what'll happen. But I gave it a stab anyway.

So Leon keeps chasing Pob, which includes giving the cat collar.

Which leads to the 2nd Leo question.

Then Pob approaches Leo directly.

I'm not certain if Leo will speak to Pob before or after Fiat asks about Pob. The reason he goes with "friend of a senior" could be entirely because bringing Leon into a conversation with Fiat isn't exactly Fiat's favourite thing. Plus, "oh the guy Leon has a crush on" could be considered spilling secrets and handing Fiat ammunition (Leo doesn't know Leon's already told Fiat). Dealing with spoiled brats competing for your attention is hard work 😩

But I went with before because... well it works I guess? Possibly just because I've gotten used to thinking of it in that order.

But Fiat gets right on the "plan"... I guess Leon helped him fight past his remaining shyness at least? 😅

He only asks about Pob after they've showered.

Pob updates his cat about how Leon's making him feel.

Fiat tries to upkeep the house. Since there's no maid and he's trying to be a good boyfriend.

Leo finds him struggling with dishes and we get a cute scene.

Then Fiat finds Leo in an apron, since of course Leo doesn't want Fiat to do all the work. And we get another cute scene.

I included an implication of Fiat jumping Leo in school as a continuation of the "plan".

Not sure if the rose if from Leo or for Leo; if they arranged a court date and Leo didn't show or something? At any rate, I think Fiat was waiting for Leo to show when Leon came.

My first feeling is that Fiat would go forward, not run away, when Pob & Leo are "caught". But possibly he'd go forward, have his say, then storm off, ignoring Leo?

Including the Leon & Leo bed scene here is partly because I can't think of a better time to have it. It can lead to Leon explaining... something to Leo, which can lead to LeoFiat resolution, a move intended to earn forgiveness for Leon from viewers?

That resolution includes/leads to a court date to make up for the messy one.

Meanwhile LeonPob go on a kind of date.

And we end on a cute scene just because. 🤷‍♀️

(Of course, it's quite possible the ep will end with the "caught" scene - just like ep 4 ended with the library scene that had been included in the ep trailer.)

I know I said I'd keep putting the girl into the next ep, but I've changed my mind. I think she'll get an ep to herself eventually.

So after watching the Renzongs and Qianlongs of dramaland, I realise how much I missed the Emperor in The Mischievous Princess played by Alec Su. Yes, this drama is old, but is the perfect antidote to His Royal Fucklord in Serenade of Peaceful Joy. 

刁蛮公主 The Mischievous Princess, aka My Bratty Princess, stars Korean actress Jang Nara and Alec Su. Alec Su plays a conveniently ambiguous emperor of the Ming dynasty (probably? his surname is Zhu so...) who is in much the same predicament as Zhao Zhen, in that his mother interferes far too much into court matters and hinders him taking full control of his power. Unlike Renzong, he doesn’t let it become an excuse to act like an asshole to everybody around him. He also has to deal with an annoying clingy consort who is also his cousin on his mother’s side, so his mother’s niece. He’s an actually clever and benevolent and competent ruler as well. Here he is, trolling his way out of a rebellion. 

The plot surrounding the main female lead is fairly predictable but this drama was made back in the days when dramas plots were much more straightforward. It is also blissufuly short at 33 episodes, because it was made in a time when it wasn’t the norm to drag your dramas out into the 50s. This is actually still one of my favourite dramas of all time, because it is a good combination of wuxia elements, humour and romance. 

The actress for Lin Qinshuang in The Story of Ming Lan has a supporting role in this drama, a very different character than Lin Qinshuang.

You shouldn’t watch this if you’re easily distracted by obvious dubbing? Jang Nara is Korean and shot this entire drama speaking Korean, and afterwards was dubbed over in Mandarin, so her mouth movements super doesn’t match her speech. 

I also write Huan Zhu Ge Ge fanfiction where Yong Qi becomes emperor, and a lot my characterisation of Yong Qi as emperor was based on the emperor in this drama.

1. Who is your favourite character in 2?

I don’t dislike anyone on Voyager, which is rare for me. I give Neelix a lot of shit, but I do actually like him. A little. :) When I was a kid, Tom Paris was my fave, probably because he was a Gary Stu who never got called out as a Gary Stu, and that appealed to me in middle school oop. As an adult, tho, I love Seven of Nine. She probably has the most character development of anyone on the show. Harry is second, but poor guy never got promoted. Not his fault, but it stunted some of his potential development ;_; So, I’m gonna say Seven of Nine.

2. Who is your least favourite character in 1?

Rodney McKay. I was so glad when they shipped his annoying ass off to Atlantis. I know the writers were presenting his constant misogynistic harassment of Sam as “humorous,” but it really wasn’t. Sam deserved better.

3. What is your favourite episode of 4?

Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh. God. Ummm....this list is way too long. Since it’s been a really long time since I bothered to remember individual House episode names, I can only describe the episode. It’s in the show’s final season when Shit’s Getting Real, and the writers are finally like “lol fuck it” and wrote Wilson sobbing to House, “I need you to tell me that you love me!” Suddenly, all of that subtext from over the years became canon. The little jokes, the winks and nods, they all paid off in the end. I remember being FLOORED that a network show just Did That. I’m just sad that Wilson had to be literally dying before we got it.

4. What is your favourite season of 5?

Again, it’s been a VERY long time since my memory needed to be this sharp for an old show, but I’m going to say all of the seasons EXCEPT for the last one. It was all over the place, and then Xena just fukkin dies. I get that it was a noble sacrifice, but why couldn’t Xena and Gabrielle live happily ever after? Gabby becomes a famous bard, Xena opens a dojo or something, they get married, do a lil farming on the side, boom. Done. Happy ending. But nooooo....

5. Who is your favourite couple in 3?

Season 5 was completely deleted from my memory through a very complicated and delicate brain operation I never told y’all about it. So it’s still Sciles. Feels good, man. :)

6. Who is your favourite couple in 2?

B’Elanna and Tom. But if I could picked a polyship, it’d be B’Elanna/Tom/Harry. 👀

7. What is your favourite episode of 1?

"Abyss” is almost always at the top of my list, but “Orpheus” is damn good, too. I’m picking both of those, and you can’t stop me.

“The Bitter Suite!” It’s a really fun episode. And I remembered the name of it. :)

Probably season 4.

10. How long have you watched 1?

I started watching in season 3. SG-1 was still on Showtime, and aired on Friday nights. I usually had football games to attend (I was in marching band), so I’d set up the VCR to tape the show, and I’d watch it when I got home. My first full SG-1 ep was “Legacy.” I caught up with the first two seasons in syndication, and I was all caught up by the time season 5 came around. 

11. How did you become interested in 3?

I read some Big Wolf on Campus fanfic that crossed over with Teen Wolf. So I decided to watch Teen Wolf to see what all the fuss was about. I’m not going to go into details, but the fic I read wildly mischaracterized the show. I’m glad I checked it out for myself. I ended up loving Scott McCall so much, in spite of that stupid fic.

12. Who is your favourite actor in 4?

Robert Sean Leonard.

13. Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?

Yeah, I’m gonna echo Divvy here and just say, “Fuck you” to this question lol

SG1 literally aired over 100 more episodes that Teen Wolf, so um, math.

15. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?

A dying patient of the week who watches all these doctors hash out their personal drama over my deathbed while I collect all the tea they’re recklessly spilling, and then I get cured at the last second from a stupid disease I got from eating cat litter or something. Don’t ask why I was eating cat litter. That’s not for House’s team to decide, which is why I didn’t immediately tell anyone I ate cat litter when I was first admitted. All I know is that at least six of those doctors are fucking each other, one is on meth, and another one definitely killed a guy on purpose.

16. Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?

Teen Wolf and House? Sure. Melissa transfers to New Jersey, Scott eventually follows her since a couple of his pack members are already on the east coast after they all graduate high school and deal with the bounty hunter mess. Scott decides to go to med school (some of his vet school credits might transfer, who knows), and he ends up at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. He only sees House in the halls, because I don’t want Actual Ray of Sunshine Scott McCall coming in direct contact with House. He hangs out with the ducklings, tho. And he does rounds with Wilson, who takes a huge liking to him and his ability to literally make patients feel better just by holding their hand...ohhh, this could be a fun sandbox to play in. I just might...eat...some sand...  

17. Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple?

Jack and Maybourne. I SAID IT! Oh, and Daniel/Martouf because I shipped it when I was in like 8th grade lmao. Everything else I’m thinking, like Sam/Janet, Daniel/Teal’c, Jack/Daniel, Sam/Martouf...none of those are that unlikely. Aside from the dead people, but y’know.

18. Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5?

Let’s be honest; the writing on both Teen Wolf and Xena was never anything to get excited over. Huge plot holes, inconsistent characterization, incoherent plots, they all pretty much made up the overall experience of watching these shows. But I didn’t watch for that stuff. I just liked fun stories and nice characters. I don’t care if they didn’t make sense. Xena jumps 10 feet straight up in the air and somersaults through an open window while catching her chakram mid flip? Fantastic! Everyone in Beacon Hills suddenly becomes broke af and are struggling to pay bills because it serves the plot for one season and one season only? Great! Gabrielle gives birth to an evil doppelganger? Okay! Where did Kira go? Huh? WHere DID SHE GODOHDOJDLJD

Overall, viewers were excited about the new episode and ranked it well. It seems everyone is fired up and ready for the anime to pick up where it left off. Bonus points for a short one year hiatus this time!

I'm really excited to see this new version of the Uprising arc unfold. This episode did a great job at highlighting the paranoia and "on the run" aspect better than the manga counterpart, with the safety net feeling well and truly gone. The tagline for volume 13 was "No Safe Place Left", but it's the anime that really made me feel that was the case.

Trust WIT studio to surprise even the manga readers with their content. Everything from the OP to the pacing was completely unexpected, but I love it!

GREAT start, a good way to hype both Manga readers and anime only fans into the start of the new season !  (putting it in the ‘was this a good start’ question)

There have definitely been mixed reviews on the new opening. The majority of voters were happy or content with it, while about 22% of respondents could have thought better on it. Maybe it will grow on people as the anime continues!

For me the opening was a masterpiece. The melancholy and the foreshadowing for those who don’t read the manga is fantastic. As I am current with the manga it made me sad for the kids because I know how things are now and I was also excited to see them again in animated form.

I must admit, on my first listen, I was thoroughly disappointed by red swan and thus hated it with passion. But shockingly I LOVED it just on my very second listen (which was when I actually watched the episode)! I then understood that there was nothing wrong with that beautiful song nor the opening itself. It was all my personal expectations, biases and unwillingness to accept something new.

Something about the animation in the OP was weird and the still shots they included looked like someone else's fanart.

I'm disappointed with the opening. I just feel like it's not on bar with the previous ones. But I guess people are right about it being more suitable for an arc that's focused on character development, so I don't hate it as much now. I just hope that we get a second opening when the action kicks in (since they're covering up to the ocean) that makes the viewers more hyped. My problem with the current opening is that it doesn't feel like Attack on Titan anymore. I'm also not super happy with the drawings in general.

The opening really fits this part of the story because this is the part when shit gets real.

This OP is very different from the previous three. What is your favorite opening so far?

Shinzuo wo Sasageyo took the lead by a huge margin (including votes for our lovely typo version, “Shinzuo no Sasageyo”), managing to outdo the iconic first opening, Guren no Yumiya!

Regarding Red Swan: While it is a departure from the bombastic hype we've had before, this is such a good OP for this arc. It takes the OP in the complete opposite tone, which is exactly what this arc does with the rest of the series. The visuals are stunning, and the song itself is an absolute tune. #RedSwanDefenceSquad

Also, regarding the OP, the song isn't bad, but it doesn't really fit the AOT style of epic openings. To me, it feels more like an ED, which have always been softer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a more epic second OP as we move into the RTS arc.

There was no ending theme this time. Will this become a consistent thing?

Respondents were confident that we’ll be getting an OP. Of course, as we’ve learned over the week, this is true! And surprise! It will be Linked Horizon!

Which of the below were your favorite moments?

It was close to a tie between “Kenny’s explosive entrance” and Levi’s “KENNYYYAHHH!” with the former barely taking the lead. Safe to say, the cliffhanger in this episode left us all impatiently awaiting episode 39! Other notable favorite moments were “Moblit ready to throwdown for Hange,” “Hange promising to torture Sannes,” and seeing Eren at the ocean.

Still salty about not seeing Eren build a house in his Titan form

I really enjoyed that they moved certain conversations like Eren and Historia to that particular part of the episode. It just fit so well! My kids. :')

I liked the moments between Levi and Mikasa - she asked him about his wounded leg and she was really worrying about him. I'm glad that she shows some interest in other people (not just Eren and Armin).

What do you think of the new episode’s pacing?

The largest denominator are waiting to see how more of the season plays out before making a final judgement call, and many are confident that everything will be okay. Still, there is a small percentage who are concerned that they won’t get to see everything they hoped for.

Uprising is my least favourite arc, mainly due to the pacing issues. So I am very excited that they will be tackling those. I'm going to need a few more eps to correctly judge things, but I am hopeful.

I was kind of disappointed. I know they want to change the pacing and all, but I don't accept them sacrificing some important and necessary scenes for character development. I've yet to see how the rest of the season will unfold before judging it, but yeah, I really hope they won't rush things again, especially when it's my favorite arc!

I watched with an anime only and he was confused by the pacing, and how we got to the cabin from seeing the beast titan at the end of the last season. I hope they don't keep rushing through the manga chapters. I was not enthusiastic about the episode.

The pacing was really fast, but that's the price of having to condense such a complex manga into an anime, that probably had limited time/budget, as they all do. So I am happy to get what I can, and enjoy the hella beautiful animation, instead of complaining about all the scenes they cut out…

A lot of stuff really quickly, but it's understandable. This is my favorite arc and I love political intrigue, so I'm hoping we start to fill in some of the scenes we've already skipped past as we go along and the Anime-onlies are already hooked. I *really* hope we get to see the badass competence of our Vets - they deserve it!

Which main character got the best S3 glow up so far?

Levi is (unsurprisingly) the clear winner in this competition. We think his new bedhead hair is charming, too! In second place came Eren, followed by Mikasa and Historia.

I would have LOVED the duo action, but I anticipate to see that in the following episodes (or else Wit and I are gonna have some words). At least it's nice that Levi trusted Mikasa to handle this mission without his supervision!

Mikasa was great! A little sad they cut Jean being protective over her safety after Sasha shoots the arrow though.

It was alright but developing her personality and relationship with the other characters is more important than constantly just giving her ~badass~ scenes.

Considering that Levi had to be somewhere else, I'm fine with it since it's such a small scene. But I still want some Levi/Mikasa duo action

I watched the season premiere at the movie theatre and when that scene came up I could hear a discrete general gasp coming from the audience. I liked how everyone was shocked but still tried to contain their excitement for anime watchers.

Felt like they’re trying to make it seem like a dream sequence rather than a reality.

I felt it gave more mystery to how the plot will develop for anime-onlies. It was a great decision to show it at the beginning, especially Eren alone.

I'm not sure how I feel about Kenny. I imagined him a bit differently. While reading a manga I saw him as harsh, cold, mysterious man with deep voice and scary looks. In the anime however he looks too young and his face is different.

Looks like WIT was really anxious to introduce Kenny. I didn't mind it overall, but I hope their shuffling scenes around doesn't become overwhelming.

It really was just an extended trailer, everything included in the trailer was in the episode, it was very good and I enjoyed it nonetheless!

The episode was definitely awesome for a first episode. I’m kinda disappointed that they skipped Historia’s explanation about her past, but I hope they will show it in a future episode. Also, the opening was stunning. Seeing my favorite characters as kids made me smile so much. Overall, this episode got me excited for the next episodes.

Amazing! Glad that it was not Eren centric and We'll be seeing Levi alot. I hope they show more of Mikasa and Levi moments. It was awesome. I first watched the episode at the cinema so I couldn't watch it with the opening. But I loved it!

This is so good! I was at first worried that they will shove Levi down our throats (as much as I love him), but now I'm surprisingly confident in this new season! I trust Wit to make great changes in the pacing, because the anime version definitely need some improvement. The animation is stunning and Mikasa and Levi were amazing, they can slay me when they want.

Trust WIT studio to surprise even the manga readers with their content.

MANGA SPOILERS: I'm most curious to see how different the plot will be now that they seem to have skipped the whole SC/Reeves company collaboration. The OP was honestly a shock at first watch but now I can't stop listening to it. I think it's perfect, especially for us manga readers, because it really tugs at your heartstrings when you think of what's currently happening in the manga. Especially that scene with kid!Eren bumping into soldier Eren. I'm still crying. :( All in all, brilliant episode, can't wait for next week!

They cut out a shitload of little dialogue that isn't important to the plot between the characters I was hoping to see animated so that was pretty disappointing. I'm expecting that trend to continue. On the opening, I'm a manga reader, I get what they were going for and all the undertones and such but I still didn't like it much. I don't like how some of the characters got the shaft completely and how characters important to this season like Erwin, Levi and Historia and characters related to them barely got any parts in the opening.

honest thoughts on wanna one (part 1)

so yes, like any other produce 101 fan, i stayed up late to watch the final episode. i had my own desired list of top 11 but i suddenly grew to really like ot20 so accepting the final line-up was easy for me. however, i really do agree that some of the trainees who didn’t make it still had so much potential and it hurts my heart to see them not debut ;;

1. Kang Daniel: he really did deserve this position by showcasing his talents. i also want to acknowledge his adaptibility in fulfilling the different positions and roles he took up/was given during evaluations. im happy for him and am glad that he was able to make it this far!

2. Park Jihoon: i never really knew what the hype was about him other than being ‘wink boy’ on their very first nayana stage. he didn’t exactly grab my attention but i have to admit he will be a good addition to wanna one as the visual. i guess he did have, along with a strong fanbase, a clean and innocent image which definitely made his journey to top 2 more achievable.

3. Lee Dae Hwi: as a brand new music (bnm) stan this produce 101, im absolutely elated to witness his rise in position after quite some time. i think he is a very strong and independent boy who was able to handle the stress during evaluations despite being just 16 (international age)

4. Kim Jae Hwan: yes!!! i always liked the colour of his voice and wished that more people would actually recognise that. he has been the main vocal since group battle all the way till now and being ranked 13th last week, i was exceptionally worried. however, he finally made it (and even further up) and im just thankful people realise how much he can actually contribute to wanna one vocally.

5. Ong Seong Woo: his humour and variety skills has led me to root for him as i see him as one of the mood makers in wanna one. i can’t wait to see him and the other members on weekly idol or something of that sort because it would be so entertaining. i also admire how consistent his rankings were since it wasn’t easy considering how much it has fluctuated for others every week.

6. Park Woo Jin: MY FIXED PICK MY BIAS MY FAVOURITE MEMBER :“) IM SO HAPPY HE MADE IT FROM 72ND IN EP 1 TO THIS. despite getting shingles and all, he literally braved through the entire show doing his ultimate best. not only did he gain recognition slowly, he also started to be more cute and confident during filming and i just ;-; so precious!!! must protect!!!!

7. Lai Guan Lin: he flew all the way up and im just beyond speechless because he did it! being a foreigner was definitely hard enough for him, let alone competing with 100 other boys for a chance to debut. he must have wanted to express much of his gratitude but couldn’t because of the language barrier but i for sure have to say, he is one tough kid.

8. Yoon Ji Sung: i was extremely surprised he made it because of how much his ranking could change everytime. im expecting him to be the leader now since many of the boys also said that he was very dependable and had a motherly figure! i also think he would be one of the mood makers and meme of wanna one.

9. Hwang Min Hyun: im definitely happy for him but im sure he felt apologetic yet thankful yet guilty yet lonely. knowing that he was the only one from nuest that was able to make the cut, he probably felt too sad and sorry to even be happy. i hope, however, he will still make the best out of it and do well. i rooted for him as well and im relieved that at least he made it.

10. Bae Jin Young: i didn’t expect him to be in top 11 at first and that’s also because of how much his rankings have changed over the weeks. his fanbase seemed really strong as well so he managed to secure a spot. i think he has improved a lot since the start and im anticipating more of his improvement in skill level as well as confidence!

11. Ha Sung Woon: i was actually skeptical when he climbed up to 3rd the last episode because some fans may think his sudden existence will threaten their bias’ ranks. he made it still after almost an hour filled with suspense. another strong vocal and im definitely not complaining!

Stuff I want to see improved in S2 (if we get one)

So before I start I just want to say that I genuinely love Yuri on Ice. It’s one of my favourite anime, not just from 2016 but just in general. (Because of all the recent “discourse” I feel the need to clarify that when I say “favourite” I don’t mean “objectively best”. I just mean subjectively and biasedly favourite. Like, for comparison, my favourite anime ever is probably Durarara, and I could write an entire thesis on the problems with that show. Now with this disclaimer out of the way on with the rest of the post.)

But even though this is one of my favourite shows, there are some changes / improvements which could make it even better (in my opinion anyway.) 

Dot point list of the main stuff which I would like to see done better/changed: 1. pacing / tension 2. animation (I’m not even going to bother elaborating on this one)

Dot point list of stuff which was okay in S1, but I would like to see expanded on: 1. side characters 2. Yuri (Plisetsky) 3. the LGBT+ representation

I’ll elaborate on these points under the cut. (This got a lot longer than I wanted it to. Sorry)

So probably the two biggest issues with the show was the pacing / tension and the animation. I’m not going to talk about the animation. Since the Crunchyroll awards that has been cover to death. And there are also plenty of great posts talking about the pacing issues.

But I am going to talk about an episode structure which I think would work better than what was in S1. Because it would be a second season a lot of the introductory episodes at the start could be reduced. The first two competitions from S1 (the Onsen on Ice and the local competition) would be unnecessary. Once those two competitions are out of the equation then there would only be three competitions. So potential episode line up could be:

Ep 1 & 2: training in Russia and getting to know the Russia skaters better. Ep 3: Arriving at the first competition. No actual competing just introduction of the character who will be in the event. Ep 4: First competition Short Program Ep 5: First competition Free Skate Ep 6: Break episode. Moving on to the second competition. Character introductions for that event. Ep 7: Second competition Short Program Ep 8: Second competition Free Skate Ep 9: Break episode. Moving on to final competition. Character introductions for that event. Ep 10: Final event Short Program Ep 11: Final event Free Skate (Part 1) Ep 12: Final event Free Skate (Part 2) + winding up the series

I think most of the logic behind why I think this would allow for better pacing is quite obvious. The biggest problem with the final episode, in my opinion, is that it was rushed. They couldn’t have all of the free skating and give the series a proper wrap up in the time that they had. Also having break episodes between the events would allow for a couple of things: more fleshed out side character introductions, more lengthy conversations/interactions between Yuuri and Victor, it would allow for more variation in the shows tension, and it would give the animators a break.    

I also think it would be good that if Yuuri and Victor are both competing that they are in the same competition for two of the events. Preferably the fist and the last. The the middle event could focus on Yuuri (and maybe Yuri as well) and then we just briefly check in to see how Victor’s second even went in the Ep 9 break episode. By this episode the majority of the finalists would have been introduced anyway so some of the time could be used for other stuff.

...This bit got longer than I wanted it to (sorry).

Now on to the stuff which I thought was handled okay, but I would like to see either expanded on or done even better:    

1. The side characters. I thought that with how little time the series had to introduce side characters they did a remarkable job. Like, I can remember all of them without any difficulty. Also I think the last time I saw an anime which represented this many nationalities it was Hetalia... and if that doesn’t say everything about the state of diversity in anime I don’t know what does. They could have been more developed though and I’ve already kinda talked about how that could be achieved in the series layout I suggested.

On a related note: Yuri on Ice, I will give all of my money if you introduce a trans or X-gender side character. (okay maybe not all of my money, but a large portion of it.)              

2. Yuri Plisetsky. He is amazing. How could he be done better? More screen time... That is all.

3. The LGBT+ representation. So I actually thought that the LGBT+ representation in this series was really good. Earth shatteringly brilliant? No. But still better than 99% of other anime. The two criticisms I’ve seen are about the fan service and the fact that it didn’t address prejudice/homophobia.

Firstly, about the fan service. I’m the type of person who would be happy if nothing ever had fan service. But still, I don’t think that the fan service detracts from the representation. (I’ve actually made a post about this before.) I don’t think that there was fan service because there were gay characters. I think that it was more a case of there was fan service and there happened to be gay characters. (I’m never quite sure how to word that but hopefully that explains the distinction?) Basically I think that the fan service would be exactly the same even if the characters were straight. Which is why I don’t think it is overly relevant to the quality of the representation in the show.

Secondly, the lack of dealing with real world issues. This argument I do somewhat agree with. I actually keep going back and forth on my position with this one. Because on the one hand I love that this show exists in an ideal world without homophobia. But on the other had I agree that the representation would be more impactful if it reflected real world issues. And so I’ve thought about this a lot and I think I’ve come up with a way to kinda have both:

Imagine a scene where Victor and Yuuri are at practice or a competition or something being all lovey dovey. Some character comes up to them and says something to the effect of “could you tone down the PDA. You’re making some people uncomfortable.” I don’t think it would need to be outright stated that this is related to homophobia and there doesn’t need to be tonnes of dwelling on it. I would be perfectly happy if the response was just Yuuri and Victor telling the person to get lost and that if the PDA is making others uncomfortable then that’s their problem... Bonus points if Yuri then materializes behind the person and kicks them.

So in that way it’s never explicitly stated as homophobia, but it would still reflect a small amount of the prejudice experienced by gay couples in real life. (I hope I explained this part okay?) I think it would be a tricky tightrope to walk to reflect both real world issues and remain in an idealized reality, but I think it would be possible.

I would also be perfectly happy if neither Victor nor Yuuri ever explicitly stated that they were gay or talked at length about their orientation. But I would like to see an explicit “I love you” scene at some point.  

Also, I would like a tonne more conversations between Victor and Yuuri like the one they had on the beach. 10 more of those please.

Also, Sara and Mila should be dating.  

Also, ideally, none of the characters are straight.

Alright, so this got waaaaaay longer than I wanted it to. I sure do love to ramble. So here’s a summary:

tl;dr: The pacing of the show was it’s biggest weakness and could be improved by having a different episode structure. The side characters were great but could be given more depth. Yuri Plisetsky is perfect and needs more screen time. The LGBT+ representation was pretty good, but can always be better.

I think that pretty much sums everything up.

I feel a little guilty. After the questionable puppet interlude Matt was stuck with last week, we have my favorite episode by fa this week. Then again, Matt and I have pretty different tastes so he may have hated it! I think our opinions of this show have largely lined up week-to-week so it should be no surprise that this was (one) of my favourite episodes of the series.

Visually, I found this week stunning. I love sketch work. Absolutely adore it. The designs were familiar enough to be comfortable but still striking. The warm earthy colour scheme felt welcoming and hopeful and the little movement there was flowed well. It was just great to watch. I think this is my favourite visual style too, seeing the familiar looking JR train station signs in such a sketch artwork style really struck a cord with me and I know what you mean about “comfortable” and “welcoming” I also got ‘nostalgic’ too—even though I’m not even sure what I was feeling nostalgic of/for.

I don’t know what attracted us to this ep…

I enjoyed seeing a younger Ekoda. There was something charming in her design that betrayed her lack of experience. I didn’t even realize she was younger, I just thought she had different hair but that makes sense thinking back.

The story itself was three short vignettes, or rather two vignettes and a tag. Those two conversation in bars felt extremely real to me. They capture those heady moments of meeting someone and having those useless conversations that can seem stupidly fascinating or excruciating depending on your mood and the person you’re with. We’ve all been there but to see it so viscerally portrayed in such a short time was pretty impressive to me. “We’ve all been there”? Unfortunately you picked a weird guy to do reviews with because I’ve never talked to a random stranger in a bar—but then again I’ve never been to a bar alone (or I should say, while single) so I’ve never had this experience. Sadly I more related to the second guy than Ekoda, mostly because I know how much of interminable bore I can be when I get caught up talking about things I think I know a lot about.

I loved the end tag as well. We finally see Ekoda as we’ve come to know her and bam. Yeah it was very apt and made me laugh.

There was a air of artistic whimsy and fun in this episode which I really appreciated. I kinda wish this series was like an audition reel for the different studios to compete for who would make a full length Ekoda series because more than any other episode this had me wanting more of this. It was kinda hard to fault!
