I will always laugh when someone tries to go “but that’s CRINGE” when seeing anything, because ‘cringe’ is just the new ‘weird’ that neurotypicals used to bully neurodivergent people with.

It’s used exactly the same, but the reason they can’t say ‘weird’ anymore is because that word’s been destigmatized for the most part, so ‘weird’ now just means “unusual and and probably intriguing” in a good way, while ‘cringe’ is saying “you’re doing something I don’t like and I think you should stop so I’m gonna harrass you until you do”, which is what ‘weird’ used to mean.

#give it up for neurotypicals invading fanspaces being unable to not bully everyone else just having a grand old time #i say neurotypicals but i mostly mean people we used to call 'normies' that wouldn't touch the internet with a 10 foot pole 10 years ago #it's like they're unable to cope with the fact that internet fanspaces and fanspaces in general don't have the same social rules as their #world does and instead of trying to understand these new rules and conventions they try forcing their own old ruleset onto everyone else #fandom #this is why the mainstreamification of fandom is a huge problem #the whole point of fandom is that it WASN'T mainstream #because a huge number of people IN those fandoms WERE NOT THE MAINSTREAM #I'm probably generalizing but I distinctly remember being a kid and turning to fandom to play and stuff because I was socially rejected #by my peers and had the option of masking that I didn't know how to do and sacrificing a huge part of myself for unfulfilling social #connections I didn't even really like OR going on the internet and reading fanfiction and making up stories about my favourite characters #in my head and stuff #i was the stereotypical weird loner throughout the entirety of my school years
