i actually really like how the raven king is written, like the ordinaryness of the action 'as a parent who cleans something from a child's face'. it's such a good piece of description work

#i think there's something really neat about how the raven king it so built up when people talk about him but when he actually 'appears'#it's stuff like this or like childermass thinking he looked unfashionably like a metjodist preacher or his drinking a cup of milk #on the ground in front of the king. like he's incredibly magical & mysterious but it's actually in a really grounded real sort of way #it sort of goes along w the idea that magic is in the landscape & people etc it's a very ordinary bodily sort of thing more that something.#idk. intellectual or spiritual #if that makes sense #thoughts #jonathan strange and mr norrell
