I thought Gary Mauer and Marie Danvers's final lair kiss was special but after watching (more than) a few bootlegs I realize that Danvers never fails to deliver a good kiss regardless of who's playing the Phantom or Raoul.

And I feel like she deserves more appreciation because this is in fact an acting skill. Multiple Christines and Phantoms have already told us that Erik's face is just a disgusting mass of makeup, glue, saliva and sweat by that point in the show, so manufacturing chemistry and infusing the kisses with the right nuance(s) is no small feat.

What did Marie Danvers do?

Nothing? I just don't really care about her Christine. Same for James Romick, only for the role of the Phantom.

Most of the time if I say I don't like a certain actor, it's in reference to their performance in a role, not to them personally. I am extremely disinterested in actors' personal lives and don't know nearly enough to make any sort of judgment on them, if that's even something I have any right to do so.

This is the Playbill from the First time I ever saw Phantom on Broadway in July of 2012

Looking back, I am amazed at how much the cast has changed since 2012

The thing that really fascinated me was the Understudies featured at the time

During this time, they had not one not two but THREE Understudies for Christine

Today they only have ONE understudy for the role, and that excludes the Alternate

During this time they had various understudies for Raoul sharing the part on various days as well as Monsieur André & Don Attilio

For this particular performance, Paul A Schaefer was Raoul

But what really made my first experience at Phantom special was that I had Jeremy Stolle as the Understudy for The Phantom

I will admit, I was a litttle upset that the Understudy was on for The Phantom, but in his first scene, Jeremy Stolle immediately grabbed my attention

He was phenomenal in the role and really opened my eyes to the world of Theatre and especially Understudies, Swings, & Stand-bys

So this is very interesting to see. (from early ‘93 playbill) I knew Ciaran was an understudy Phantom on both Broadway and the original 3rd US tour cast, but I never knew Grant Norman was an understudy on Broadway before being in the tour (1994-1995) and in London (1996).  So I guess that makes him the only Phantom to be on Broadway, the US tour, AND London (unless you count LA as a tour since Michael Crawford did that) ..Also was unaware Grant covered Raoul! (and James Romick as Raoul too?! wish there was audio of that!)

[These are like my 'unpopular opinion' Phantoms?]

Josh Piterman: He cheated the unwritten final lair rules by actually embracing Christine back, but I am SO glad he did! He has the voice and natural intangibles for Phantom.

Greg Mills: Love him as a person (on social media at least) and want to love him as the Phantom, but inexplicably...don't and I don't know why *crying emoji*.

Stephen Buntrock: Inexplicably do love him and don't know why. The voice, the vibe, and the choices just work for me and I wish there was more of him to see.

Franc D'Ambrosio: Serving face, serving drama, always so extra, but I have to be in the mood for it.

Peter Jöbeck: I truly do not understand the hate he gets; his voice is so perfectly disturbing and Joker-esque!!! And he actually seems to regret his actions at the end, not just losing Christine.

James Romick: He's very forceful/on the nose (vocally + acting), and I think the Phantom is more than just "commanding." That being said, his "I love you's" are beautiful.

Géronimo Rauch: He's scary and sexy in equal measure. Elements of his performance remind me so much of JOJ.

Jon Robyns: Don't know much about his Phantom, but want to get to know more lol.

Tim Howar: He seemed very violent with Amy Manford's Christine in the final lair, and that turned me off. The Phantom is already "yikes" so let's not add unscripted physical aggression to the equation.

Brad Little: I live for the way he's so bossy and booming in "Phantom mode" but such a damn softy during the AIAOY reprises and final lair.

'The Phantom Urn', a wonderful piece of turned and segemented wood craftmanship by long-time Broadway swing (and understudy Phantom), James Romick. Apparently James' hobby is fine woodworking, and he created this urn - complete with inlaid Phantom masks - as a gift for Howard McGillin, on the occasion of Howard becoming Broadway's longest-running Phantom at 2544 performances. The urn is comprised of a staggering 2544 pieces of wood, one for each of Howard's performances up until that milestone. You can see process photos of The Phantom Urn's creation, along with other examples of James' woodworking (including some other Phantom-themed pieces) at his studio website: Romickraft.

Okay so here's a rare photo I found while poking around the internet. Apparently it was taken on September 28, 2001, during the filming of a commercial by the combined Broadway show companies in the wake of 9/11. The photographer's website credits the Phantom as being Jeff Keller, but I tend to think it looks more like James Romick, who did a lot of the promotional appearances for Phantom at that time.
