"THE ACADEMY" 2012 JAMES KERRY MARSHALL. A look into an artist studio. The only figure present is the live model. Naked except for a white undergarment. He stands tall. Fist raised. Afro standing at attention. The details of the face are barely illuminated. The artist hasn't forgotten them, he illuminated the features in such a delicate way. "UNTITLED (CLUB COUPLE) 2014" I liked this exploration of #blacklove. The realism here is extraordinarily rendered. The subtle shadow behind the figures depicted is remarkably similar to a photograph taken with an on-camera flash. Providing more light than the interior of a night club. The attention to detail in rendering the pattern on the dress, the fur collar on the white jacket, the untouched drinks, their intimacy, and their expressions give me the impression they had an instant to make a good photo. The science before us depicts a stylish woman walking, no strutting through this wooded environment. The sign displayed prominently at the top of the painting solidifies the place in our minds.
