Song Review: Robby Krieger and the Soul Savages - “A Day in L.A.”
With his new band, the Soul Savages, behind him, Robby Krieger continues with the jazz-fusion approach that’s marked his post-Doors solo career.
The instrumental “A Day in L.A.” announces the Jan. 19, 2024, arrival of the band’s eponymous debut and it burrows deeply into a groove whose walls are caked with neo-jazz, funk and soul.
Kreiger plays some slide guitar; piano and organ add color and take a few short solos. But this music isn’t about individuals showing what they can do with time in the spotlight. No. This music is about the musicians coming together for the greater purpose of the song.
“These guys are world-class players … they have that great groove pedigree,” Krieger says of his unnamed bandmates in a statement.
And “A Day in L.A.” proves he’s not bullshitting.
Grade card: Robby Krieger and the Soul Savages - “A Day in L.A.” - B+

artists that inspire: Kow Yokoyama, Jan Buragay
Kow yokoyama is perhaps best known for his intellectual property ‘Maschinen Kreiger’ (Ma.K) which features a variety of sci-fi machine models.

these were a particular source of inspiration for the pearls and serpents aliens, particularly all the cables sticking out and bits of exposed mechanical details.
Jan Buragay’s art is similar, with an emphasis on machines and mecha, there are more human figures, robots and spacecraft here as well, though his style tends to look more stringy and fibrous.

Song Review: Robby Krieger and the Soul Savages - “Samosas and Kingfishers”
Robby Krieger cuts into guitar solo that doesn’t sound like a Robby Krieger guitar solo about halfway through the five minutes that comprise “Samosas and Kingfishers.”
Said solo is the highlight of the track that follows the superior “A Day in L.A.” from Krieger and the Soul Savages’ forthcoming (Jan. 19, 2024) self-titled debut.
The balance is a throwback not to Kreiger’s Doors days, but rather the fusion jazz he’s played during the bulk of his solo career. But unlike much of that music, “Samosas and Kingfishers” is generic and unimaginative - think Spyro Gyra minus horns.
Grade card: Robby Krieger and the Soul Savages - “Samosas and Kingfishers” - C
