Jane chuckled, having been in his shoes a time or two before. Sometimes she could be a bit too long winded in her explanations of things. ‘I could tell they were all starting to zone out so I ended it five minutes early. Have to keep up my reputation of being the nice biology professor on campus.’ She could feel heat creep up to her cheeks at the sight of his grin. The brunette had been smitten with Thomas since the moment she’d met him back when she’d started at this school. She was the worst at flirting though, or just even getting her feelings across in general. Far too afraid to ruin any sort of professional relationship they might strike up. 'Oh, I could use a pick me up before my afternoon class. I’d love to tag along.’ // @lostxones

@sirxnx cont. from here.
It was a stupid thing to worry over, the baby wouldn't notice it at all just like George said. Blame this nesting phase that the woman had shifted into this week. Jane had been nonstop trying to put this nursery together. That and the rest of her home. Some parts were spotless and others were torn apart waiting for organization putting things where they felt right. But Jane did smile at his little joke, hand running over her belly for a second. 'I know, I know.' She replied softly, stepping into the room to look around more. 'I just want it to be perfect for my sake I suppose.' If little things like the nursery were something she could be proud of, then all of this would be okay. Even with George helping with nearly everything, Jane still felt on her own doing this. Having a baby.

My dad raises grass-fed beef cattle and I help him sell it, mainly by maintaining an online presence. For a while, I kept having the most ridiculous conversations with people who I assume were marketing students. I didn't want to be rude so I'd try to let them down gently but this one guy just kept insisting that with his magical marketing skills he could grow our business.
What he could not seem to comprehend is that we could not grow our business, at least not without significant time and monetary investment. Cows take two years from pregnancy to the size that you can sell. If we buy adult cows, our margins become razor thin or even negative. Even if we somehow could acquire some cows, our barn and hay fields are already near maximum capacity. Renting another field would be relatively easy, building a bigger barn not so much.
Cows are living animals, they aren't widgets that can be produced infinitely. Besides that, many businesses inherently cannot grow, because if they do they'll become something else. The delicious bakery down the street cannot produce much more than they do, if they began mass marketing and production they'd eventually be selling the equivalent of Twinkies. We grow grass-fed, organic beef, if we expanded how long would that last? Eventually we'd become the very factor farms that we hate. Some things can only ever be made on a small scale and they are usually the best things.
But also, what are they teaching them at marketing school and how is it so disconnected from reality?

Jane shared that look with him, holding tight to his hand once he took hold. Yeah, someone was definitely trying to play god by bringing dangerous reptiles and birds back from extinction. Jane wouldn't have picked dinosaurs as the thing to bring back into the world. Like the black rhino, the Tasmanian tiger or a few of the tropical frog species. But she understood the shock factor of dinosaurs. People would flock to see something that had been gone for millions of years.
Jane reached out, shaking Michelle's hand with a nod of her head. 'The one and only.' It's not uncommon to find someone who knows her fathers name. As different as it is for one, and all his discoveries and conservation work on top of it. Her father certain made a name for himself over the years. Ever humble though, something he easily passed down to his daughter. 'Thank you, we try our best. And it's nice to meet you as well, thank you for having us here.' Sliding a glance over to Landon as she squeezed his hand.
Something still wasn't settling right with her, but she did her best to brush it all off. This was meant to be a bit of a getaway and she needed to treat it as such. Let them get the business stuff out of the way. See what they needed to see for Landon to make a decision and then enjoy themselves. 'How hard do you think Brett is going to turn on the charm here?' Jane whispered over to him with a smirk, watching the man smile at Dr. Woodward.
“History with a little bit of man playing god?” Landon wondered aloud, turning to give Jane a knowing look. His views are definitely skeptical sometimes but he’s open minded. Finally, he spotted those two land rovers. Oh yeah this is gonna be interesting. Taking a breath, he slid his hand down to take Jane’s in his own. Best keep a positive outlook just as she said. Wondering if they’re about to meet Royce right now but coming out of those vehicles is a woman. Her appearance definitely drew Brett’s attention beside him.
With a cordial smile she approached with a welcoming presence since these are distinguished guests. At least she recognized the bearded man immediately. Filmmakers have a certain air about them. She looked to his other two companions, noting the director’s hand attached to the woman’s. “Welcome to Isla Sorna. I’m Dr. Michelle Woodward. Mr. Royce’s chief scientist and liaison for the day.” She reached a hand out to shake Landon’s first. “Mr. Wynter? A pleasure to have you and your crew.”
Landon shook her hand. “Pleasure is mine. This is Jane Porter.”
Michelle smiled to her, reaching to shake her hand as well. “Miss Porter... Porter. Is your father Archimedes Porter?” The redhead is visibly intrigued, genuinely curious now. To think they were only expecting Landon Wynter. Now there’s a famed name in a wholly different field. “I know about his work. What you both do. It’s admirable.” Dr. Woodward turned her head to the third person with them. It prompted Brett to lean over towards her. “Brett Sutton,” he introduced himself, smiling at her. “Radio, tech… best crew guy.” She laughed a little while shaking his hand. “Mr. Sutton. Well, we’ll be heading to the main facility. Mr. Royce had to take care of something that popped up there but he’s eager to see you all.” @violentwxnter // prev

It's 11 PM, but one of my favorite little Darcy/Elizabeth moments happens while she still hates him and thinks he's a depraved monster, and I find it really entertaining.
It's during the Kent section, when Darcy calls at the parsonage and finds Elizabeth alone. During a longer, awkward conversation in which they both deeply misunderstand each other, they have this tiny interchange:
[Darcy:] “This seems a very comfortable house. Lady Catherine, I believe, did a great deal to it when Mr Collins first came to Hunsford.” “I believe she did—and I am sure she could not have bestowed her kindness on a more grateful object.” “Mr Collins appears very fortunate in his choice of a wife.” “Yes, indeed; his friends may well rejoice in his having met with one of the very few sensible women who would have accepted him, or have made him happy if they had. My friend has an excellent understanding—though I am not certain that I consider her marrying Mr Collins as the wisest thing she ever did."
So: they are in Mr Collins's house. Darcy tries to re-start the conversation with a polite nothing about the house. Elizabeth agrees about Lady Catherine's micro-managing, but can't resist the chance to make a sly jab at Mr Collins (who is not present) to Darcy (a genuine villain, as far as she believes).
Darcy's reply looks a bit like an attempt to redirect the conversation into safer waters (they can agree that Charlotte is cool!). But although his remark is only somewhat related to what Elizabeth said, I think it's a natural follow-up in his mind because he is also insulting Mr Collins, if more subtly.
He could have praised Mr Collins's judgment in choosing Charlotte or just said something nice about Charlotte; he doesn't. Instead, he suggests that Mr Collins's choice of Charlotte was a matter of good fortune—or chance, as Charlotte herself would say!—on Collins's part. Darcy and Elizabeth both know Collins is a fool and that his choice of a woman like Charlotte says nothing about his judgment, only about his good fortune. (Elizabeth has even better reason than Darcy to know how much Collins ending up with Charlotte was lucky for him, but Darcy can see it anyway.)
Darcy's phrasing gives him some plausible deniability, but I think he's generally quite careful with his wording and the implicit insult to Mr Collins is not accidental.
Elizabeth, I think, takes this exactly as intended. She's not at all confused about where this tangent came from or offended by it or anything. She readily seizes on the new line of conversation as encouragement to keep insulting Mr Collins and his appeal to women with functioning brainpower.
Elizabeth is pretty scrupulously polite in general, so I kind of love that she just starts venting about her absolute contempt for Mr Collins and the Collins/Charlotte marriage to Darcy in the middle of a tense and weird conversation in Mr Collins's house. And I love that Darcy, who is otherwise more or less dog-paddling his way through this conversation, is like "yeah, your friend seems really cool, that dumbass is lucky he accidentally chose someone with a brain."
Elizabeth: "Right? And, let me add-"
(Is it a bit of an asshole move on both their parts in the context of that scene? Yeah, I think a little. I also love it! Please trash-talk obnoxious hosts in their own parlours for the rest of your lives.)
#anghraine babbles#deep blogging#i'm feeling a bit 'don't explain the joke' about ... well. explaining the joke. but it's still funny to me!#darcy and elizabeth are genuinely good people but sometimes they can't help statler and waldorfing it up#austen blogging#pride and prejudice#jane austen#elizabeth bennet#fitzwilliam darcy#otp of otps#sidenote: i don't think darcy and charlotte really interact 'onstage'#but i find it interesting that charlotte (who does not like men) sticks up for him multiple times#and is the one to deduce months before the pemberley scenes that darcy is generally different than she's known him#meanwhile darcy is oblivious to charlotte trying to further his romance with elizabeth but is like ... good vibes tbh#charlotte lucas

I finally started watching Pride and Prejudice (1967) and I'll never complain about adaptations ignoring Mary or misinterpreting her character again because at least she's actually IN them. In this one she just... doesn't exist... 😅
Apart from the lack of Mary, I'm enjoying it so far! The scenes that were added in which don't feature in the book are fun and Caroline especially is great. Mr Bennet is cracking me up with each line delivery too. Pretty faithful to the novel and good characterisation, I can see why hardcore Janeites think highly of it!
#pride and prejudice#pride and prejudice 1967#mary bennet#jane austen#haven't seen enough of darcy yet to form a proper opinion#and them condensing the meryton assembly and lucas lodge interactions between darcy and elizabeth didn't work#because he says she's not handsome enough to tempt him one second and then immediately asks her to dance??? sjsjsjdj#1980 is still the only one that has their first interaction correct!!!#about to watch episode 2 and i guess it's time for the netherfield arc oOoOo exciting

Jane stood in the doorway to the room that was now slowly becoming the nursery. She had always wanted to be a mother, but not like this. Not after her engagement fell through. Not after her ex had ended it because he was in love with someone else. It had utterly crushed her when he had told her, not moments before she was about to tell him they were expecting. Jane had run to the only person she could think of, and cried for days. Now, there hasn’t been a day where her best friend wasn’t dropping off baby clothes or offering to help her set up the nursery, which is where they are now. 'Are you sure this color looks alright?' She asked him, looking over the walls once more.

[There wasn't much for the shopkeeper to do lately. She hadn't seen a lot of the others lately, strange. So, the lady decided to take a break from her usual shopkeeping duties and take a stroll outside where she usually was. 'Course, until she bumped into someone.]
"Ack- Oh, my apologies! I wasn't..."
[She paused, her eyes fixating on the person before her.]

'We're here for the rest of the summer, Mr. Wynter. You wouldn't be impeding.' That, her father can't disagree with. Anytime they go away it's with ample time to do what they need to do. Archimedes always find the proper funding when needed. 'If we could help I would like to offer it up for you.' Right place right time is what all of this was sounding like right now. Do what they came here for and get to help with a movie production? Sounded like a summer well spent to Jane, chancing a look towards her father who knew he wasn't going to have a choice in the matter now that his daughter seemed so interested. He also wouldn't just let her go off on her own with some Hollywood hot shot in the jungle.
'My father is an expert of making sure we leave a place the way we found it. He can help with all of that too.' To which her father actually nodded. 'Nice to hear someone is conscious of all of that. Can't completely avoid a bit of disruption but you can certainly limit it if done properly. An admirable view on the world you have.' He said towards the younger man. In not so many words it was his way of saying Landon was leaning more into his good graces. Still unsure of it all but not unwilling to help now. Jane had to press her lips together to avoid smiling too hard, both at her father and the way she can feel Landon's eyes on her. It's not lost on her now that he's handsome. That she very well could be working with him if he agrees. She's not dated someone- whoa, slow down Jane you barely know the man.
Clearing her throat she glanced over to the director. 'Of course you don't need to make a snap decision here, Mr. Wynter. We are staying nearby in a home we've rented out for the remainder of our stay.' Grabbing a napkin and a crayon from the table and scribbling down the address of the home. 'Give it some thought, run it by anyone you need to, and if you think it can work out let us know.'
Complimenting him on his doc? Well, that’s something. He smiled. Couldn’t help it now can he? “Guess a bout of yellow fever was worth it. If you liked it.” The man chuckled lightly, picking up his drink and clearing his throat slightly. Right. Her father is right there. Good time to ease up. He took a sip and man did he need it now. “Afraid I’ve move onto horror and sci fi. But I still love a good adventure. Why I like the locale so much. Shooting on location is definitely my cup of mocha latte.” Landon took another drink, listening intently to Jane’s offer. While he wasn’t expecting that it’s also appreciated. Wonder if it really would work well. She seemed to know her stuff. Primatologists are definitely an upgrade from anything else he might find last minute.
“I wouldn’t want to … impede on the research you and your father are doing.” The director was genial about the whole situation. That doesn’t mean he isn’t interested in getting to know her…. getting something done for his movie anyway. “Gotta fly in someone for the editor position. My co producer is here so he’ll probably pull a string or two. But animal expert.. hmm,” he hummed, wrapping hands around his glass. “Color me intrigued. We’ve been worried about upsetting the local wildlife. We have certain areas to shoot in and a couple are actually in the jungle. And being as I’m familiar with it I don’t want to disrupt or damage anything.”
Landon is well aware of his surroundings. After he’s dealt with certain circumstances, doing some of his more adventurous and nature inspired documentaries, he wants to keep things intact. “Hollywood doesn’t know how to respect things like this. So I told my producer we have to do it carefully. Too beautiful to mess up you know?” Landon’s eyes rested on her as he spoke the words. @violentwxnter // prev
