THE FACE IS FAMILIAR… BUT I CAN’T PLACE THE NAME!
Same Actor / Different Character ~ Part 2: “The Lucy Show"
Tumblr media
It used to be quite common for actors to be cast in multiple roles on the same series. Not in principal parts, certainly, but in supporting and minor characters. Lucycoms were no exception. Although the world created by these shows was representative of reality, the characters who populated them often gave viewers Deja vu.
For the purposes of this discussion, we won’t include background performers (aka extras) as they were nearly always drawn from the same pool of actors. Also, those who played multiple characters need to have at least one of them identified by name.
MARY JANE CROFT
Tumblr media
Croft (a veteran of "I Love Lucy") was introduced to viewers as Audrey Simmons in 8 episodes from episode 8 in 1962. When the show's location was changed to Los Angeles, Croft also changed - into Mary Jane Lewis, which was her legal name during her marriage to producer / director Elliott Lewis. When Vivian Vance left the cast, and Lucy failed to fill her 'second banana' spot, Croft's role became increasingly more integral to the show. The second MJ was seen in 31 episode, including the series finale.
CAROLE COOK
Tumblr media
A protege of Ball's from the Desilu Playhouse, Cook was introduced as Thelma Green in five episodes set in Danfield. Unusually, during that time she also played Betty Jo Hanson at "Lucy's College Reunion" (1963). Perhaps the episodes were aired out of filming sequence. When the show moved West, she played socialite Mrs. Valance for three episodes, and a variety of other characters (large and small) in 11 more.
ROY ROBERTS
Tumblr media
Roberts was best known as Bank President Mr. Cheever, a role he played in 14 episodes starting halfway through season five and including the series finale. But he first appeared as the Admiral in "Lucy and the Submarine" (1966). Roberts was likely typecast as Mr. Cheever after playing a similar role on "The Beverly Hillbillies" from 1965 to 1967.
MARY WICKES
Tumblr media
Wickes was a great friend of Lucille Ball's. While she only made one appearance on "I Love Lucy", she was seen much more frequently on "The Lucy Show". In her first appearance she played a character named Mary Wickenhauser, Wickes' birth name. It wasn't long before she was back as Fran, one of the Danfield volunteer firefighters, in three episodes. When the series went to LA, she was Lucy's Aunt Gussie in two episodes, followed by one-offs Miss Winslow, Miss Hurlow, and Aunt Agatha. In total, she played 6 characters in 9 episodes over 6 seasons! And that's just on one series!
LUCIE ARNAZ
Tumblr media
Before she joined the cast of "Here's Lucy" as a series regular in 1968, Lucy's daughter was given opportunities to perform on "The Lucy Show", although in small roles. In Danfield she was seen as Chris's friend Cynthia in several episodes. In LA, she played several different teenagers in five episodes.
HERB VIGRAN
Tumblr media
Vigran started out as Dr. Jacoby, the umpire of Danfield's softball team, in two episodes. He went on to play a variety of others: a doctor, a vet, a postman, and a computer salesman that was referred to as "Mr. Vigran"!
DOROTHY KONRAD
Tumblr media
Konrad used her own first name as a member of the Danfield Volunteer Fire Brigade in two episodes, then used her last name as one of Lucy's college alumni in another. She also played bank secretary Mrs. Hutton, and babysitter Mrs. Fletcher.
JOAN SWIFT
Tumblr media
Swift was most often seen using her own first name as a Los Angles co-worker of Mrs. Carmichael's. She also played an airline passenger, a French maid, and characters named Laurie and Dottie.
KAREN NORRIS
Tumblr media
Norris was seen in six episodes, each time as a different character, but all with dialogue. Her most significant role was as Babette Edwards, a woman about to have her sixth child in "Lucy and Viv Play Softball" (1963).
LEW PARKER
Tumblr media
Parker played Joan Crawford's agent, a movie producer scouting Frankie Avalon, Phil Harris' music producer, Mr. Mooney's lawyer AND his psychiatrist! In some episodes he used his own first name, in others he used his own last name.
PARLEY BAER
Tumblr media
Baer Started his "Lucy Show" life playing the man who sells Lucy Clementine the sheep. He went to be seen as two judges, an army colonel, and a doctor. Is it any wonder he was one of the most familiar faces on television?
KATHLEEN FREEMAN
Tumblr media
1964 was a big year for Freeman, who appeared on "The Lucy Show" five times in four different characters. She was known by her own first name in two episodes, but also played Olga the cook, Mrs. Putnam the maid, and Mrs. Blake the nurse.
GARY MORTON
Tumblr media
Morton was Lucille Ball's real-life husband, and also a producer on "The Lucy Show". His first role (not surprisingly) was as Lucy's boyfriend, named Gary Stewart. As a stand-up comedian, he was able to handle dialogue and was cast in three more small roles, one time using his real surname. In the end credits, he used his birth name Morton Goldaper. Speaking of Lucy's boyfriend...
KEITH ANDES
Tumblr media
Andes had played Lucy's love interest on Broadway in Wildcat (1960), so it wasn't a reach for him to do it again on "The Lucy Show." He played Bill King on two episodes set in Danfield. In Los Angeles he was back as Lucy's love interest, but this time named Brad Collins. Collins is an airline pilot, just like Lucy's boyfriend in Danfield, Harry Connors (Dick Martin).  Collins was also the surname of Viv's steady boyfriend, Eddie (Don Briggs), back in Danfield.
LOU KRUGMAN
Tumblr media
Krugman was one of Lucille Ball's favorite performers. He was instantly recognizable as the film director coping with Lucy Ricardo and her ungainly headpiece. On "The Lucy Show" his first appearance was as a Chemistry teacher named Dr. Adrian Vance (after Vivian, of course). He played a music producer named Barney Miller (no relation to the TV detective), and finally returned to playing a film director, again coping with Lucy as she watches John Wayne film a western.
JONATHAN HOLE
Tumblr media
Hole made his first appearance with Lucille Ball in 1966, playing a department store manager named Mr. Collins. That same year he was Mr. Haskell, a Palm Springs hotel manager where Lucy and Carol sing. Finally, he used his first name to play Jonathan Winslow, father of three rambunctious chimps babysat by Lucy.
RETA SHAW
Tumblr media
Shaw was a popular character actress from film (Mary Poppins), stage (The Pajama Game), and television ("The Ghost and Mrs. Muir"). She was seen as 3 different characters on "The Lucy Show" starting as a girthy granny at the fairgrounds when "Lucy Misplaces $2,000" (1962). In "My Fair Lucy" (1964) she was dominating Dora Dunbar, wealthy socialite. Finally, she played Mrs. Foley, owner of a roadside stand selling maps to the stars homes when "Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere" (1966).
HARVEY KORMAN
Tumblr media
Korman is best remembered from his hilarious work on "The Carol Burnett Show", but he was also worked with Carol's mentor, Lucille Ball, playing 3 roles on "The Lucy Show." First he was Mr. Slater, manager of a day camp where "Lucy and Viv are Camp Cooks" (1964). The next year he was twitchy stockbroker Mr. Phillips. During the series' first LA episode, Korman played Major Grayson, who is in charge of a military academy.
PAUL WINCHELL
Tumblr media
Paul Winchell was best known as a ventriloquist and the inventor of an artificial heart (seriously). In 1966 he played himself on "Here's Lucy," also showcasing some of his most famous creations. The following year he was cast as Doc Putnam, a little old man, in a two part musical episode "Main Street USA". He was barely recognizable. The role required him to sing and dance, which led to a falling out between his daughter and Lucy. She felt that Lucy was working him too hard and being exceptionally cruel.
KASEY ROGERS
Tumblr media
Rogers is best remembered for playing Louise Tate on “Bewitched” from 1966 to 1972.  For Lucy, she played Miss Cavanaugh, manager of a flight attendant training school attended by Lucy and Carol (Burnett). In the final season, she played Miss Carroll, secretary to Phil Harris.
LLOYD CORRIGAN
Tumblr media
Corrigan appeared in two films with Lucille Ball before joining her on the small screen as Mr. Holly of Holly Cleaners on the first season of "The Lucy Show". He returned to play gentleman crook Carter Harrison (a name that when reversed is given to Gale Gordon's character on "Here's Lucy" and the unnamed proprietor of a Los Angeles Christmas Tree stand.
TED ECCLES
Tumblr media
Teddy Eccles was the second child actor to play Arnold Mooney. When Mr. Mooney and Lucy moved to Los Angeles, their children were hardly ever discussed. So Eccles was given the roles of cadet Harold, and Barry the choirboy.
HAL SMITH
Tumblr media
Smith was best known as Otis the drunk on "The Andy Griffith Show," filmed at Desilu. For "Lucy" he played Mr. Wilson, one of the dads on an all-dad (plus Lucy) camping trip, and tuba-toting Mr. Weber in the two episodes set on "Main Street" of Bancroft.
WILLARD WATERMAN
Tumblr media
Former "Great Gildersleeve" on radio, Waterman played TV host Greg Gregory in “Lucy and the Plumber” (1964), followed by Tex Critter at the dude ranch in "Lucy the Rain Goddess" (1966).
DICK PATTERSON
Tumblr media
Patterson was a Broadway performer who played the "doctor" in "Lucy and the Beauty Doctor" (1966). The "doctor" was actually a TV host for a hidden camera show. He returned seven months later to play Marty King, director of Danny Thomas’s television show.
DORIS SINGLETON
Tumblr media
Doris had originated the role of Carolyn Appleby on "I Love Lucy". On "The Lucy Show" she first played Ruth Cosgrove in "Lucy and Art Linkletter" (1966). Her character name was the real-life name of Milton Berle's wife, who would actually appear in season five as herself! Singleton returned to the series when "Lucy Gets Her Diploma" (1967) using her own first name. Doris (the character) has very little to do with the plot.  Her scene might have been originally meant for Mary Jane but reassigned to Singleton due the indisposition of Croft.
RUTA LEE
Tumblr media
Lee made her big screen debut in MGM’s Seven Bride for Seven Brothers in 1954. She was seen in many Desilu shows, finally acting opposite Lucille Ball on “The Lucy Show” as “Lucy’s Substitute Secretary” (1967). That same year she played herself opposite the aforementioned Ruth Cosgrove-Berle!
JACKIE COOGAN
Tumblr media
One of the first child actors in Hollywood, Coogan is best remembered as Uncle Fester on "The Addams Family." He was mentioned on "I Love Lucy," but finally meets her face to face as Lieutenant Ruggles in "Lucy and the Military Academy" (1963). Five years later he was back as Mr. Burton, manager of a drive-in hamburger stand when "Lucy Gets Involved" (1968).
JAY NOVELLO
Tumblr media
Novello started acting with Lucy on her radio show and was also seen on "I Love Lucy." In this series he plays Mr. Bundy, candy shop owner and safe cracker , and (1963) Tony DiBello, owner of an Italian Restaurant (1964) where Lucy takes her millionaire date.
OTHERS WHO HIT A DOUBLE
Jack Benny (Harry Tuttle / Himself)
Lyle Talbot (Mr. Stanford / Howard Wilcox)
Dan Rowan (Colin Grant / Dan McGowan)
Barbara Morrison (Mrs. Walker / Mrs. Winkler)
Cliff Norton (Mr. Bentley / Ike)
Tommy Farrell (Pete Murdock / Harry)
Jack Collins (Rocky / Ernie)
Howard Caine (Harold / Paul Roney)
Byron Foulger (Fred Dunbar / Mr. Trindle)
Eddie Quillan (Mr. Vincent / Briggs)
Elliott Reid (Ross Dowd / Dr. Oscar Kurtzman)

« Rhythm of Love » is the third album to be recorded by Australian Kylie Minogue. It was released in the United Kingdom on 12 November 1990 by Pete Waterman Limited ( PWL) and in Australia on 3 December 1990 by Mushroom Records. Kylie started to become more involved in the writing and production of the album. Recording sessions took place in London and Los Angelas during early-to-mid 1990. Kylie was credited as a co-writer for the first time while Stock Aitken and Waterman (SAW) were the primary producers along with new producers and collaborations, including Keith Cohen, Stephen Bray and Michael Jay.
« Rhythm Of Love » is a musical departure from Kylie’s earlier bubblegum pop records and has a more sexually liberated image and dance-influenced sound. It received generally positive reviews from music critics being complimented as her best work with SAW. The album was not as commercially successful as Kylie’s previous albums, becoming her first studio album not to reach number one in the UK, reaching number nine on the UK Albums Chart. In Australia, itw as kylie’s third top 10 studio album, peaking at number 10, while also attaining top 20 positions in Ireland, France and Spain.
Four accompanying singles were released: « Better the Devil You Know », « Step Back in Time », « What Do I Have to Do », and « Shocked », all of which peaked inside the Top 10 in the former region. Promotion for: « Rhythm Of Love » included controversial music videos and continued to associate Kylie with an increasingly provocative image. The artist further promoted the album with her « Rhythm Of Love Tour », travelling to Australia and Asia. The album was re-issued in the UK in 2015, when it returned to the UK Albums Chart.

Book of Clarence Starring LaKeith Stanfield Headed To The Big Screen
Tumblr media
Everyone loves a good movie, especially an original one. A new and unique cinematic experience, "Book of Clarence," featuring LaKeith Stanfield, will soon grace theaters near you. Here's everything you need to know about this exciting film. On LaKeith Stanfield LaKeith Stanfield has undeniably emerged as a standout figure in Hollywood, earning his reputation as a must-watch talent. Many first recognized Stanfield through his breakout performances in the series "Atlanta," where he collaborated with Childish Gambino. But he's also left an indelible mark in various film projects, from "Straight Outta Compton," "The Purge," "Selma," "Dope," "Get Out," "Death Note," "Sorry to Bother You," "Uncut Gems," "Knives Out," "Judas and the Black Messiah," "The Harder They Fall," to the 2023 feature film "Haunted Mansion." One look at his extensive filmography makes it impossible to ignore his remarkable talent. No matter what character shoes he fills, big or small, he stretches them to his size. Without a doubt, he slays every role. Now, fans of LaKeith have another reason to celebrate as he steps into the role of Clarence in the upcoming film "The Book of Clarence." Book of Clarence This is a film that may be different from what everyone expects. "The Book of Clarence" is a piece with a biblical slant. The story transports viewers to 33 AD and introduces them to Clarence, a character driven by ambitions intertwined with faith and personal gain. As Blexmedia notes, “The Book of Clarence centers around its title character (Stanfield), a man inspired to become the next Messiah for personal gain. But his journey turns out to be a bigger exploration of faith and loyalty than he could have imagined.” Fundamentally, Clarence sets his sights on joining the apostles, driven by his fascination with their status and position. Audiences will accompany Clarence on his quest, witnessing how he attempts to fulfill his vision while encountering significant lessons. Despite initially harboring doubt about the Messiah, Clarence is compelled to search for and discover his faith as the story unfolds. This narrative promises to offer a thought-provoking and spiritually resonant experience for viewers. Who's Behind the Book of Clarence While Stanfield's name is enough to earn the investment of many moviegoers, there is so much more to be excited about. "The Book of Clarence" reunites some of the creative team behind the successful feature "The Harder They Fall." Jeymes Samuel, who directed "The Harder They Fall," will be at the helm of "The Book of Clarence," ensuring a consistent and compelling directorial vision. Additionally, Jay Z, who produced "The Harder They Fall," is set to return as a producer for this project, adding further anticipation to the film. Fans of Stanfield will also be delighted to hear that RJ Cyler, a co-star from "The Harder They Fall," is also part of the cast. This reunion of talent from a well-received film like "The Harder They Fall" suggests that "The Book of Clarence" will be a movie undeniably rich and one viewers will not want to miss. Other Amazing Cast Members The film also boasts a superb supporting cast, some of the best in the industry. Of those mentioned is Teyana Taylor, who made a splash in "A Thousand and One" and "Coming to America 2." David Oyelowo, as seen in "Selma "and "The Waterman," will add his talents. Alfre Woodard, known for projects "The Porter" and "Twelve Years a Slave," will join the ensemble. Benedict Cumberbatch, the title character in "Dr. Strange" and "The Hobbit," will also be aboard. Omar Sy from "Jurassic World and Transformers" will bring his acting chops. James McAvoy, who appears in "Split" and "Transformers," will also participate. And Micheal Ward from "Empire of Light" and "Top Boy." And this is only the tip of the iceberg. Theatrical Release Date There is no way to explain how intriguing this feature is shaping up to be. However, the wait will be slightly longer as "The Book of Clarence" is expected to be released in the new year. So, if this is enough to entice the appetite, mark your calendars for January 12, 2024. There are a lot posts on here about the trope of “everyone knows that hero’s secret identity but they’re pretending not to,” and everyone can have their own head canon, but mine are correct. So here is the definitive list of which DC franchises should have actually functional secret identities and which ones shouldn’t:
Superfamily: What didn’t Bendis ruin? Superman’s secret identity should be the most ironclad one in the DCU, or possibly tied with Batman’s. “This guy puts on glasses and somehow it works???” is FOUNDATIONAL to the very nature of the genre. The best episodes of both Superman: The Animated Series and Lois and Clark are about how crucial the secret identity is to Clark living a full life. You can’t be Superman and publicly accessible at all times, and also, it ruins the fun. Only two people should ever figure out Superman’s secret identity, and they should be Lois, who calls him on it, and (much later) Jimmy, who doesn’t, because as long as Clark and Superman are two different people he’s gonna keep getting two different birthday presents every year. Jon and Kara’s IDs should be equally airtight. Kon’s is terrible but no one figures it out because Jacket Superboy is such a ham that no one believes he could maintain a secret identity for more than 30 seconds before revealing it in an attempt to get a date or score a free Zesti. (The world knows the boys as Jacket Superboy and Baby Superboy. I don’t care how old Jon is.)
Batfamily: ALSO AIRTIGHT. The only people who should ever be able to figure out Batman’s secret identity are Ra’s al Ghul, Bane, and Tim Drake, three equally weirdo stalkers. No, the Joker doesn’t know. No, the working girls from Jason’s old neighborhood didn’t figure it out because the Red Hood is nice to them. Yes, Matches Malone and Alvin Draper are highly convincing personas. IT DOESN’T WORK IF IT ISN’T AIRTIGHT. I DON’T CARE IF THE BUTTS MATCH.
Wonder Family: Only Cassie even bothers, and she doesn’t have the wig or goggles anymore, so...yeah, everyone at the Elias School knows she’s Wonder Girl. It’s fine. They think it’s cool.
Flash Family: SIGH. Speaking of people who ruin everything, Geoff Johns. Let’s go back to when Wally had no secret identity and was absolutely basking in the attention 24/7. Jay doesn’t even wear a mask! I will permit inexplicable secret identities for Bart and Wallace so that they can go to school. And hell, you know what, let’s say Barry isn’t even trying to maintain a secret identity but no one notices because they assume there’s no way a man that milquetoast could be the Flash, that would be funny.
Green Lanterns: John and Guy have never had secret identities. Does Hal? Does he really? Kyle is the opposite of Barry, where he truly believes he has a functioning secret identity even though he publicly hangs out with the other GLs all the time and leaves Earth for months at a stretch and wears a costume so tight anyone who has ever seen him naked is like “Oh hey, it’s Kyle!” I will allow Simon and Jess to retain their secret IDs for now because Simon wears a mask and Jess never leaves the house and they have, um, families to protect and stuff, which the older four don’t really anymore. (Are Hal’s brothers in continuity anymore? I can’t remember.)
Arrowfamily: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. The best part is that they really think they have secret identities. Bless all of their beautiful, equally stupid hearts.
Aquafamily: They don’t actually have any (except that on occasion Arthur has gone by “C. King” or “Mr. Waterman” on land, which is FUCKING HILARIOUS), but there is an arc where Arthur grew a beard and everyone in Atlantis was like “Wow, who’s that?” HE WAS THEIR RECENTLY DEPOSED KING! WITH A BEARD! STILL WEARING THE AQUAMN COSTUME! AND THEY HAD NO IDEA!!! Anyway I therefore propose that humans can see through any Aquafam disguise instantly no matter how good it is but Atlanteans are inexplicably fooled by the flimsiest of fake mustaches and eyepatches. Garth came home with a slight Scottish accent after boarding school and no one recognized him for three months.
Boostle Family (THIS IS A THING, SHUT UP): Booster doesn’t have one. Jaime’s is flawless. Ted truly thinks his works even though he is publicly married to best friends with Booster. I love them.

Part 2 ~ The TV Shows of the Lucyverse
Tumblr media
Although it may seem redundant, the worlds created by Lucille Ball on radio and television frequently created and mentioned other TV shows!  Here are a few from “The Lucy Show” (1962-1968).
Tumblr media
“Lucy Puts Up a TV Antenna” (1962)
When Lucy's TV set doesn't work, she discovers that the antenna has blown off the roof. Refusing to spend extra money to have one professionally installed, she talks Viv into helping her replace it. As the episode opens, Sherman and Jerry are excited that the All-American Football Team is going to be on TV. When the reception is poor, Lucy engages in the old practice of  banging on the side of the set, something she claims she learned from her late husband.
LUCY: “What did we do before television?”  VIV: “We used to hit the radio.”
Tumblr media
With Lucy on the roof, Viv yells up the chimney, “I got carried away watching Art Linkletter. Come on down Lucy. He's about to go through a lady's purse.”  “The Linkletter Show” (also known as “Art Linkletter's House Party”) was seen on CBS from 1952 to 1970. Lucille Ball appeared on the show in February 1965.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower” (1963)
“Where’s Lloyd Bridges when you need him?” ~ Lucy Carmichael
Bridges starred “Sea Hunt” from 1958 to 1961, a series about a scuba diver which featured extensive underwater filming, so much so that his name become synonymous with underwater adventures. Bridges was seen in all 155 episodes of the CBS series. He was also mentioned in the same context in “Lucy Buys a Boat” (1963). Lucy says she bought the boat with the hull in the water so she didn’t notice the poor shape it was in. She adds that she didn’t have Lloyd Bridges with her at the time!
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Sister Pays a Visit” (1963)
Lucy’s son’s lunchbox features images from the television western “Lawman,” which ran on ABC from 1958-1962.  A “Lawman” lunchbox is now part of the collection of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. The lunchbox shows up again in “Vivian Sues Lucy” (1963).
Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets Locked in the Vault” (1963)
Danfield TV is on the scene when Lucy and Mr. Mooney finally get out of the vault.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Safe Cracker” (1963)
Demonstrating how she got locked in the vault for Larry McAdoo (William Woodeson) of Danfield TV, Lucy accidentally locks Mr. Mooney back in the bank vault again!  Taking advantage of the air time, Lucy gets in a commercial for Grandma’s Candy Shop, owned by the safecracker (Jay Novello).
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Plumber” (1964)
Lucy and her plumber (Jack Benny) appear on the television program “Talent Discoverer's Show”.
Tumblr media
Hosted by Greg Gregory (Willard Waterman), the show is sponsored by Kiddie Cookies, baked beans, and varnish!
Tumblr media
Lucy was already on the show once, so this time she disguises herself as Lucretia Carmucci, the talent discoverer of the title, presenting her plumber Harry Tuttle, who plays an arrangement of Donizetti on the violin.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets Danny Kaye” (1964)
Lucy writes away for tickets to “The Danny Kaye Show” but is turned down.
Tumblr media
Kaye offers to give her a walk-on role in the telecast – but Lucy manages to steal the spotlight anyway. In 1962 and 1964 Lucille Ball guest-starred on Kaye’s CBS TV program “The Danny Kaye Show.”
Tumblr media
Kaye telephones Bill Paley to see if he has any spare tickets to give Lucy. William S. Paley (1901-90), was the chief executive who built the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) from a small radio network into one of the foremost radio and television network operations in the United States.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Beauty Doctor” (1965)
When Lucy hears about a $25 beauty treatment, she tells Mr. Mooney the money is for a doctor. When the treatment turns out to be a hidden camera show named “Boiling Point”, Lucy must do whatever she can to stop it from airing and revealing her secret to Mr. Mooney.
Tumblr media
“Boiling Point” hosted by Dick Patterson is modeled loosely on “Candid Camera,” a TV show that started in 1948 and continues (in some form) to this day. Its heyday was from 1960 to 1967, when it was a ratings winner for CBS on Sundays at 10pm.
Tumblr media
“Lucy in the Music World” (1965)
When Lucy takes a job in a music producer's office, she wangles her new neighbor Mel Tinker (Mel Torme) into a gig on the musical variety television show “Wing Ding”.
Tumblr media
“Wing Ding” is hosted by Reb Foster and presents The Six Bare Feet, The Torch Bearers, The DDTs, and The Tear Ducts (Lucy and Mel) singing the plaintive ballad "My Trousseau Just Lies on the Shelf.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy Helps Danny Thomas” (1965)
When Mr. Mooney hires Lucy to get some important papers signed at a TV studio, she finds herself dancing on Danny Thomas's TV special instead!
Tumblr media
Although this is not a real TV program, Thomas did host “The Danny Thomas Hour” for 22 episodes in 1967. Thomas was a Desilu regular, appearing in “Make Room for Daddy” (later “The Danny Thomas Show”) as well as doing a cross-over episode with “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Art Linkletter” (1966)
Lucy is picked from Art Linkletter's studio audience and challenged not to utter a sound for 24 hours to win $200. In January 1966, CBS aired new episodes of “Art Linkletter’s House Party” daily at 2:30pm while “I Love Lucy” was in reruns at 10:30am.
Tumblr media
During the 24 hours, Linkletter arranges for a one-armed man to burst into Lucy's apartment waving a gun and say that a guy has been chasing him for three years. This is a reference to the hit ABC series “The Fugitive” (1963-67) on which David Janssen was on the trail of a one-armed man who killed his wife. Three weeks after this episode of “The Lucy Show” was filmed, Doris Singleton (Ruth Cosgrove on “Lucy and Art Linkletter”) guest-starred on “The Fugitive.” The series was a Quinn Martin Production. Quinn Martin was a producer at Desilu and also married Madelyn Pugh, one of Lucille Ball’s longest lasting writers.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Soap Opera” (1966)
Lucy disguises herself in a number of outrageous get-ups to gain access to the reclusive writer of “Camden Cove,” her favorite soap opera, to learn how the show will turn out.
Tumblr media
Camden Cove is described at “the typical American town” so it was probably inspired by “Peyton Place,” a prime-time soap opera which aired on ABC from 1964 to 1969. Like “Camden Cove,” it aired three nights a week and dealt with the tangled relationships found in a small American town. Danfield was compared to Peyton Place in “Lucy and Joan” (1965).
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (1966)
LUCY (to Edwards): “Oh, doctor!  Oh, doctor!”
Lucy disguises herself as an usher to meet celebrities. On the reception line, she asks Vince Edwards for his autograph. Vincent Edwards (1928-96) was probably best known as the title character on ABC TV’s “Ben Casey” (1961-66) which was filmed on the Desilu lot. A new episode of “Ben Casey” aired on ABC at 10pm on the night this episode of “The Lucy Show” premiered. It was directed by Marc Daniels, one of the directors of “I Love Lucy” and Jesse Wayne was the stunt coordinator, as he was for “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Bob Crane” (1966)
Crane was best known as the clever Colonel Hogan in the CBS POW camp sitcom “Hogan's Heroes” (1965-1971), which was filmed at Desilu Studios.
Tumblr media
In the episode, Crane is making a World War One film. A one-line gag features an appearance by John Banner, who played Sergeant Schultz on “Hogan’s Heroes”. He utters his famous catch-phrase from the sitcom.
SCHULTZ: “I know nothing!”  CRANE: “Schultz! You're in the wrong war!”
Tumblr media
Oscar Beregi plays Wolfgang Schmidt the director of the film. Beregi did two episodes of “Hogan's Heroes.” He was probably cast here for his resemblance to Werner Klemperer, who played Colonel Klink on “Hogan’s Heroes” who also wore a monocle.
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Robot” (1966)
Jay North plays Mr. Mooney’s spoiled brat nephew Wendell. North was best known as the star of “Dennis the Menace” (1959-1963). During the show's final season, North played opposite Gale Gordon (Mr. Mooney) as John Wilson.
“You will keep that MENACE subdued for the next eight days!” ~ Mr. Mooney to Lucy about Wendell
Tumblr media
“Dennis the Menace” also included a character named Theodore Mooney!
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Gun Moll” (1966)
RUSTY: “So ya see, no one is really untouchable!”
The episode is a parody of “The Untouchables” (one of Desilu’s biggest hits) starring most of the original cast. Lucy plays a gun moll named Rusty. Robert Stack (who originally played Elliott Ness), agreed to appear as long as the character names were not the same as the original. Stack was joined by Walter Winchell, Bruce Gordon, and Steve London.
Tumblr media
“The Untouchables” started out as a two-part pilot episode of “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” in April 1959. The show was introduced by Desi Arnaz and starred Robert Stack and the voice of Walter Winchell, both of whom were cast in the series, which began in October 1959 on CBS. The final episode was aired in May 1963.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Puts Main Street on the Map” (1967)
To bring attention to the plight of the town of Bancroft, Lucy stages a spectacle on Main Street, calling all the television news programs to witness the event.
Tumblr media
Dan McGowan (Dan Rowan) is a TV reporter with the National News Service.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets Sheldon Leonard” (1967)
Mr. Mooney allows TV producer Sheldon Leonard to film a hold-up scene at the bank. Lucy thinks he is really a gangster and is determined to foil his robbery.
Tumblr media
Over the telephone, Mr. Cheever tells Mr. Mooney that Sheldon Leonard produced “The Danny Thomas Show,” “Dick Van Dyke” and “I Spy.” Leonard himself adds “Andy Griffith” and “Gomer Pyle” to his credits. All of these shows were filmed at Desilu Studios.
Tumblr media
The end of the episode Leonard says:
“I suddenly got this idea for a new television series. It would be about this kooky red headed girl. She works in a bank and she gets into all sorts of impossible situations and... forget it.  Nobody would ever believe it.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy Helps Ken Berry” (1968)
A dance instructor (Ken Berry) is about to default on his loan until Lucy arranges for him to be on “Ralph Story’s Los Angeles”, a local television show.
Tumblr media
Ralph Story was well known in the Los Angeles area as a local TV personality as host of “Ralph Story’s Los Angeles” from 1963 until the late 1970s.
Tumblr media
Ken and the his students perform “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” by Irving Berlin. For the finale, everyone sings “Pick Yourself Up” by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields.
