‘ — right. right, ponyboy ,’ the name still sounds funny in her mouth. what kind of person named their kid that ? ‘ he doesn’t sound like he’s got any respect for you. i mean, why else would he talk like that ? ’ she asks, though, it’s a hypothetical question. ‘ if any of MY siblings talked to my parents like that they’d be out on the sidewalk in a second. or at least grounded for months. ’

jeanie was right. ponyboy didn’t respect him. he just saw him as an overbearing older brother who could never replace his parents. and he was probably right too. darry never wanted to replace them. no, he just wanted to keep their little family together until soda and pony were old enough to not be taken from him.

he couldn’t stand the thought of losing them.

“ well, i’m not his parents. he’s just been takin’ losing mom and dad real hard. i mean, i don’t like havin’ him talk back an’ all, but what can i do ? i’d rather have him blow up at me than get himself into trouble. ‘sides, soda says he’s jus’ goin’ through a phase ... ”

                // linda smirks, a sparkle of understanding hidden in otherwise teasing dark eyes. she understands, she has a little brother too, a little brother who almost burned the house down at the tender age of eight. she's well aware of the potential dangers. but still, she's not willing to take him along, and they won't be out late. it seems like it might be alright for a little bit. besides- linda is the known bad influence.

she watches the consideration as emotions flash across jeanie's face, but she feels the tug at her lips widen as she sees the cracks in the facade,

sure enough, the girl gives in, and linda straightens up off the door post, glad to have, at least temporarily, a purpose again. ❛ y'got it, boss, ❜ she returns, a casual two-fingered salute following the words. she gestures to the driveway with her head, hands now returned to their customary position in her pockets. ❛ you're drivin’, i guess? ❜

          There was still a distinct ringing in her head, but Jennifer could hear the other girl. Her request made Jennifer chuckle. “I’m ok. My boyfriend’s band is much louder than that.” Still, her hand came up and massaged her earlobe. That had been really loud. “Of course, they don’t play right in my ear.” Who blasted a megaphone right next to someone like that anyway? Saving the clock tower was important but so was her hearing.

Sometimes Alex thinks he’s too old and mature for high school parties. He’s a SENIOR, on the cusp of graduation, and these things are often times populated by friends of MALLORY --- people with an IQ in the single digits. Then he remembers the wondrous invention that is Spin the Bottle and he pushes all of that away. Most of the girls at school may not meet his intellectual requirements, but at least they’re all good looking, and in a game like this that’s all that counts. 

So of course he’d have the luck of being stuck with JEANIE BUELLER. Not a word is uttered between the two of them, and Jeanie leads the conversation --- of course she does. “I’m not going to argue with you.” He doesn’t want to talk with her --- hell, he doesn’t even want to be here with her --- but a kiss is a kiss and Alex is in between girlfriends so he’ll oblige. Jeanie makes the first move, unsurprisingly, and soon her lips are against his. They’re smooth and sweet, surprisingly, and the lack of lights in the closet allows Alex to forget just who he’s in such cramped quarters with. He pulls away after a few moments. “You know, you’re not so bad at this.”
