Today In History Jean Jacques Dessalines was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1801 constitution. Jean Jacques Dessalines proclaimed the independence of Haiti on this date January 1, 1804. Dessalines was brought to the French West Indian colony of Saint-Domingue (Haiti) as a slave. He worked as a field hand for a black master until 1791, when he joined the slave rebellion that broke out in the colony amid the turmoil caused by the French Revolution. In the decade that followed, he distinguished himself as a lieutenant of the black leader Toussaint Louverture, who established himself as governor-general of Saint-Domingue with nominal allegiance to Revolutionary France. When Toussaint was deposed in 1802 by a French expedition sent by Napoleon Bonaparte to reconquer the colony, Dessalines at first submitted to the new regime. In 1803, however, when Napoleon declared his intention to reintroduce slavery (which had been abolished by the French National Convention in 1794), Dessalines and other black and mulatto (of mixed European and African descent) leaders rose in rebellion. #Repost @knowyourcaribbean with @use.repost ・・・ On Jan 1st, Haiti became the first free Black republic in the world, the first independent state in the Caribbean and the second independent state in the Western Hemisphere after the United States. The country where the ultimate dream - to end slavery- was achieved by the very people enslaved themselves. They did it. Everyone loved D’Jango Unchained because it allowed us to delve into our inner most fantasies of inflicting retribution on dutty, greasy slave masters. Every lash @iamjamiefoxx character inflicted made our wildest dreams come true via the big screen. D’Jango may be a fictional character but the Haitian Revolution is real, and heroes like Toussaint L’Ouverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines said and did some gangsta shit. What they did was so gangsta that Europe and the USA made sure Haiti paid heavily for demanding to no longer be enslaved. How dare these negroes they said. Nothing but a ‘hoard of ferocious bandits” and led by “Barbarous Chieftains’ who had the audacity. Europe and the USA ensured that the first free black nation would go from the wealthiest nation in the west to the poorest - because Haiti was just too Gangsta. #KnowYourCaribbean #chroniclesofthecaribbeanbadman #haiti #toussaintlouverture #koupetetboulekay #jeanjacquesdessalines #ayiti #haitianrevolution #haitianindependenceday #panafrican https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm5113isBtE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🏴 ✊🏽🇭🇹 @venpouven . The Honorable Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines was born on September 20, 1758 and grew up on a multitude of plantations. He was raised by Agbaraya Tòya, who taught him the history of the great rulers of Dahomey, the basics of certain African languages, and initiated him, at a very young age, into martial arts. Throughout his life, he took on many names, the last of which he chose in recognition of Jean-Baptiste Dessalines, a man who assisted him in changing his status to “free man.” Dessalines was a powerful and sagacious leader who challenged false representations of freedom and liberty. His victory defeated many and on October 17, 1806, Dessalines was poisoned by his enemies. But like roots, his influence and legacy remain deep and widespread within us. @meccaakagrimo #JeanJacquesDessalines #NouLaPiRed #Ayiticommunitytrust https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj18bnoOIQh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

👑💣📣 @el_tigrenegro . #WomensHistoryMonth aka #BlackHistoryMonthPart2: When Dessalines was about 30, Toya was sold to the Déluger plantation and Dessalines was sold to a free African. She was described as intelligent and energetic. Jean-Baptiste Mirambeau writes of a 50 slave rebellion at the Déluger plantation, "This small band of rebels under the command of Toya, was quickly surrounded and taken by the regiment. During the struggle, Toya flees, pursued by two soldiers. A melee took place between them and Toya; one was seriously injured by Toya and the other needed the help of a few other military who arrived in time." During the Haitian Revolution, even in her advanced age, she fought as a soldier in active service and on some occasions, she commanded soldiers. Her service in the Haitian Revolution was primarily in the Cahos Mountains. When Toya was dying, the emperor demanded the doctor to treat her as he would him, and stated that Toya was his aunt who had shared his feelings since he was young working the fields. After passing away on June 12, 1805, she was given a state funeral with a procession of eight sergeants and Empress Marie-Claire Heureuse. ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃ #negritude #PanAfricanism #Haiti #Ayiti #JeanJacquesDessalines #VictoriaMontou #ToyaMontou #AdbarayaToya #fanmvanyan #haitianheritage #Dahomey #Benin #Nnonmiton ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃ Part 2 (at AYITI) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMLATvbhXb3/?igshid=7i5t9vdp7cfx
