Jed Eckert is an average blue-collar worker who has just dropped his younger brother and friends off at their high school when World War III erupts, forcing Jed and a handful of boys to flee into the mountains for their lives.

Toni Mason is the granddaughter of the elderly Mason couple who aid Jed and his band of Wolverines, and she and her sister Erica join their ranks after their grandparents warn them of the dangers of staying where they are.

Jed and Toni are far too busy launching guerilla war and surviving WWIII to have a romance, but their attraction to one another cannot be ignored by either of them. As the Wolverines fight for their lives and the lives of their captive townspeople, they begin to realize that theirs is an impossible hope, but Jed and Toni continue to wage war against their enemies with no holds barred. However, their cause is not all that is doomed, and Jed and Toni will have to say goodbye long before they hoped to.
