Getting to the point I need a new car.

I am very privileged and parents say they will pay for one (within some reason)

First ever car I get some actual say in as previously just had hand-me-downs from my momma (also super privileged to have this as an option).

Overwhelmed with choices, don’t know what’s good or not. This car should last me at least a decade if not 15 years, getting me through med school (driving across MULTIPLE states here in the west), residency, beyond.

Things I want:

Compact SUV, midsize SUV okay but prefer compact.

Can handle snow and ice super well when equipped with good tires (AWD/4WD options)

Good mileage, like ideally a hybrid (no charging cables/plug in though because that’s an ADHD nightmare waiting to happen), but honestly >30mpg highway would be good too

Can take on forest service roads without concern ill damage it.

Generally reliable.

I drove a Jeep Compass as a rental car several years ago and liked it, it got me home safe over a pass during a blizzard. Looked like it was reasonably priced. Googled; people have tons of problems with suspension, not getting close to reported mileage, battery issues. Ugh.

My parents are kind of pushing a Jeep Cherokee but it feels too big and the mileage isn’t great. I want better mileage, both from an environmental perspective (already feel guilty having to use so much gas) and financial one (yes I am very privileged and currently my parents pay for my gas, but I would like to not have to be reliant on them for this in the future and thus want to be mindful of cost of ownership now).

My sisters both have a RAV4; dad is telling me it’s not a good Montana car.

Subarus are popular here but their crosstrek hybrid is a plug in apparently?? Do not like the foresters.

I liked my old Kia Sportage, but we don’t have a dealership near us and getting my old car serviced meant driving 5-6hrs away which isn’t feasible.

Also running into the issue that I’d rather get a better spec’d but slightly used car (honestly I don’t want to pay for the privilege of the car just depreciating in value), but not a lot is available in general.

P.S. Who said that EVs are expensive? Compare with ICE vehicle prices and look at “cheapest” Jeep Compass for $40,000 or Grand Cherokee for $70,000??? 

People, are you crazy or just stupid consumers to pay these high prices and interest rates??? Are there really no affordable car models in the entire North American auto market? Do you really need these overpriced vehicles for your daily commute to work?
