"It's okay, thank you so much," Jesse said, taking the wad from Xavier and doing his best to wipe away the cream and work out the stain. It looked like it was going to need to soak, though. He sighed. "This is my only nice shirt."

[ambercast]

"It takes a while to walk down here," Jesse admitted. "I didn't want to get stuck somewhere without my protection." He inhaled sharply. "And . . . I guess I didn't really want to come here and possibly see a ton of dead bodies."

"weird." xavier started saying, "not about the not hunting you thing, that's good they didn't but the whole being more interested in the town." they were curious as to why that was now. "so how come it took you this long to come into town? if you thought everyone was dead surely you would've thought there might've been supplies here in town you could've come to snag."

Jesse tilted his head. "Well, first I turn out all the lights, then I go down into the basement and lock the trap door. I burn incense while I lay down and listen to my books on tape. As long as they can see, hear, or smell you, they don't hunt you. At least, they've never hunted me. They always seemed more intent on the town."

"oh," xavier said raising an eyebrow at him now, curious as to know if he could recognize jesse but it's been so long they couldn't tell. "wait so this is your first time coming into town in," they paused and started counting on their fingers, "twelve years?" xavier was baffled honestly then they furrowed their eyebrows slightly, "how'd you survive out there if you didn't know about the protection rune then?"

"Oh. I'm not new to town," Jesse said, shaking his head. "I mean, I live on the mountain, but I used to come here all the time as a kid. This is just my first time here since the zombies arrived. I just kinda . . . walked in. I don't think the Mayor knows I'm here. I only met her once, back then."

"you don't have any?" xavier raised an eyebrow at him as he continued talking before grinning and nodding, "they do trades yeah! i'm sure they'd be willing to trade something of what you got but if not you can always go to the town hall, they usually give them to people who are newer to town. i'm surprised they didn't for you though, that's weird."

"Ration cards . . . how do I get those?" Jesse asked. "I don't have any." He paused. "Would they accept a trade instead? I have some wool and venison. I have a small . . . I don't know if it's really a farm. It's just a couple sheep and some chickens. My land isn't very big. But I have things to trade so . . ."

"of course," xavier said with a smile as he looked at the other's shirt, "if you can't get the stain out i'm sure the haversham boutique might have some nice shirts for a decent price, probably a couple of ration cards."
