Jim Corbett National Park, located in the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, is the oldest national park in India and one of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in North India. Named after the renowned hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, this park is known for its Bengal tiger population. The park spans over 500 square kilometers and encompasses diverse landscapes, including hills, riverine belts, marshy depressions, and grasslands.
Visitors to Jim Corbett can enjoy jeep safaris and elephant safaris, which provide an opportunity to spot not only tigers but also leopards, elephants, deer, and a variety of bird species. The park is divided into five zones, each offering different terrains and wildlife experiences. The Dhikala zone, in particular, is famous for its panoramic views and dense forests, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.
2. Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan
Ranthambore National Park, located in the state of Rajasthan, is another iconic destination for wildlife lovers in North India. Known for its Royal Bengal tigers, Ranthambore is set against the backdrop of the majestic Ranthambore Fort, which adds a historical dimension to the wildlife experience. The park’s landscape is a unique combination of rugged cliffs, deep ravines, and open grasslands, making it a picturesque setting for wildlife photography.
Ranthambore is one of the best places in India to spot tigers in their natural habitat, particularly around the lakes and watering holes where they often come to drink. Besides tigers, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including leopards, sloth bears, Indian foxes, and an abundance of bird species. The park also offers jeep and canter safaris, allowing visitors to explore its different zones and increase their chances of tiger sightings.
3. Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur, Rajasthan
Keoladeo National Park, also known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Rajasthan. This park is a paradise for bird watchers, with over 370 species of birds recorded here. During the winter months, the park becomes a temporary home to thousands of migratory birds from Siberia, Central Asia, and Europe, including the rare Siberian crane.
The park’s wetlands, grasslands, and woodland habitats make it an ideal environment for both resident and migratory birds. Visitors can explore the park on foot, by bicycle, or by hiring cycle rickshaws that are driven by knowledgeable guides. The best time to visit Keoladeo is from October to March, when the migratory birds are present, creating a vibrant display of colors and sounds.
4. Sariska Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan
Sariska Tiger Reserve, situated in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, is another important wildlife destination in North India. Known for its dry deciduous forests and rocky terrain, Sariska is home to Bengal tigers, leopards, wild boars, hyenas, and several species of deer. The proximity to Delhi makes Sariska an ideal weekend getaway for wildlife enthusiasts. It is also notable for its ongoing conservation efforts, particularly in increasing the tiger population through relocation programs.
5. Dachigam National Park, Jammu and Kashmir
Located in the picturesque region of Jammu and Kashmir, Dachigam National Park is known for its pristine beauty and unique wildlife. The park is famous for being the only habitat of the endangered Hangul (Kashmiri stag), a species of red deer found only in the Kashmir Valley. Dachigam, which means “ten villages” in the local language, is a testimony to the relocation of ten villages to create this sanctuary.
The park’s landscape is a blend of alpine pastures, coniferous forests, and rocky cliffs, providing a unique environment for wildlife to thrive. Besides the Hangul, visitors can also spot Himalayan black bears, musk deer, leopards, and various species of birds. Tumblr media
India, a land of diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage, is also home to some of the world's most extraordinary wildlife. From the majestic Bengal tiger to the elusive snow leopard, India's national parks and wildlife sanctuaries offer a glimpse into the wild heart of this incredible country. For those inspired by Rudyard Kipling's timeless tale, "The Jungle Book," visiting these wild havens is like stepping into the pages of the classic. In this blog, we will explore India's most iconic wildlife tours, focusing on the enchanting jungle book tour that lets you follow Mowgli's footsteps.
The Legacy of "The Jungle Book"
Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book," published in 1894, has captivated readers for over a century. The story of Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, is set in the lush forests of Central India. The characters—Bagheera, Baloo, Shere Khan, and others—are inspired by the region's natural wildlife, making these jungles the perfect setting for anyone who dreams of experiencing the story firsthand.
What is the Jungle Book Tour?
The "Jungle Book Tour" is a unique wildlife experience that takes you deep into the heart of the forests that inspired Kipling's masterpiece. This tour is centered around the national parks and tiger reserves of Madhya Pradesh, particularly Kanha and Pench National Parks. These parks are known for their dense forests and diverse wildlife and their connection to "The Jungle Book."
Kanha National Park: The Land of Shere Khan
Kanha National Park is one of India's most famous tiger reserves and is often considered the real-life setting for "The Jungle Book." The park's vast meadows, dense sal forests, and bamboo thickets are reminiscent of the landscapes described in Kipling's book. Kanha is home to a significant population of Bengal tigers, and if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the mighty Shere Khan himself.
Besides tigers, Kanha boasts an impressive variety of wildlife, including leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, and the rare barasingha (swamp deer). The park's well-maintained safari trails offer excellent opportunities for wildlife sightings, making it a must-visit destination on the Jungle Book Tour.
Pench National Park: Mowgli's Playground
Pench National Park, located in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh, is another key destination on the Jungle Book Tour. This park is often considered the true inspiration for Kipling's Jungle, as it lies in the same region where the author set his story. Pench's dense forests and meandering rivers provide the perfect backdrop for imagining Mowgli's adventures.
The park is home to a healthy population of tigers and other iconic species like leopards, wolves, and jackals. Birdwatchers will also be delighted by the variety of avian species that inhabit the park. A safari through Pench offers a magical experience, with the chance to spot wildlife at every turn.
Other Iconic Wildlife Tours in India

The park also hosts a variety of other wildlife, including leopards, crocodiles, and a wide range of bird species.

Named after the famous hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, the park is renowned for its Bengal tigers and elephant population. The park's varied terrain, which includes grasslands, forests, and rivers, makes it a biodiversity hotspot. A safari in Jim Corbett offers not only the chance to see tigers but also the opportunity to explore one of India's most historically significant wildlife reserves and east to west india travel.
Kaziranga National Park: The Home of the One-Horned Rhino
Located in Assam, Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last strongholds of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. The park's vast floodplains and tall grasslands are the perfect habitat for these prehistoric-looking creatures. In addition to rhinos, Kaziranga is home to elephants, tigers, wild buffalo, and various bird species. A wildlife tour in Kaziranga is a must for those looking to experience the unique flora and fauna of Northeast India.
