Martha Stoddard at Omaha World-Herald:
LINCOLN — Nebraska appears unlikely to adopt a winner-take-all model of awarding Electoral College votes, despite renewed pressure from prominent Republicans, according to a key state senator. That pressure included a visit to the state by U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and a letter supporting the change signed by all five members of Nebraska's congressional delegation Wednesday.
The South Carolina Republican met with Gov. Jim Pillen and several Republican state senators to call for Nebraska to ditch its system of awarding three of its five electoral votes based on the winner in each of the three congressional districts. State Sen. Loren Lippincott of Central City said Graham gave an impassioned speech about the potential consequences of Nebraska's current system, namely the possibility that the state could provide the vote needed for a Democratic victory in the presidential race.  [...]
The letter from the congressional delegation, all of whom are Republican, did not change any minds either, he said. The letter was sent to Gov. Jim Pillen and Speaker of the Legislature John Arch of La Vista. It said Nebraska should join 48 other states in using the winner-take-all allocation system, arguing that the state should speak with a united voice in presidential elections. [...]
"At this time, I have not yet received the concrete and public indication that 33 senators would vote for WTA (winner-take-all)," he said. "If that changes, I will enthusiastically call a special session.”
Any changes would have to occur before the Nov. 5 election, according to the Secretary of State's Office. Federal law prohibits any changes in law affecting an election after it occurs.  Nebraska and Maine are the only states that allow their electoral votes to be split. In every other state, all electoral votes are awarded based on the statewide winner. Nebraska has divided its electoral votes twice, leading some to dub Omaha the "Blue Dot" on the electoral map. The first time was in 2008, when the Omaha-area 2nd District's electoral vote went to Democrat Barack Obama and the rest of the state's went to Republican John McCain.
In 2020, the 2nd District vote went to Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate who went on to win the national election, and the others to Donald Trump, the GOP candidate.
Republicans in Nebraska are seeking to rig the Electoral College by changing Nebraska back to winner-take-all like the other 48 states and by weakening Omaha’s voice in the process. As of now, they are set to be short in their quest to upend election rules.

Trump talks to Nebraska lawmaker in push to change state’s electoral vote allocation to block Harris’s easiest path to victory
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/09/20/nebraska-electoral-college-trump-omaha/
Former president Donald Trump spoke by phone this week with a Nebraska state senator as part of a last-minute push to block the easiest path Vice President Kamala Harris has to win the White House by changing how the state allocates its electoral votes.
Sen. Merv Riepe (R) said he spoke briefly by phone with Trump on Wednesday in the presence of Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen (R) during a visit by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who traveled to the state to encourage Republicans in the state’s unicameral legislature to change to a statewide winner-take-all electoral vote system...
Nebraska is one of two states that award some of its electoral votes by congressional district.
A vote from the Omaha area is part of Harris’s easiest path to victory.

A GOP Flop In Nebraska
The GOP's dreams of tilting a crucial Electoral College vote toward Donald Trump before November is dead.
Nebraska Republicans had hoped to change the way their state awards Electoral Votes, a plan that would have essentially guaranteed an extra tally for Trump. GOP Gov. Jim Pillen conceded Tuesday that the last-minute proposal won’t go forward before Election Day.
Sneaky bastards. They waited until it was too late for Maine to do anything about it, since Maine will break for Harris.
"Can't win legally, so we'll cheat." That's their playbook. I'd like to think Americans are getting wise to this kind of crap....and it was a Nebraskan Republican who put the kibosh on it.
That's guts.....that's integrity

In most states in the U.S., the Electoral College is a winner-take-all system. Conservative rural turnout in Texas overrides all the Democratic votes in major urban centers like Houston, Austin and El Paso; heavy Democratic turnout overrides all the conservative rural votes in Upstate New York.
Nebraska is a rare example of a deep red state that splits its electoral vote, and the district around Omaha is more Democrat-friendly than most of the state.
In an op-ed published by The Guardian on September 19, Canadian journalist Stephen Marche warns Nebraska Republicans may put an end to that — which "could alter the course of" the presidential election in November if it's really close.
"In one of those strange freaks of American politics," Marche explains, "Nebraska has a split Electoral College vote. And for the past few elections, the city of Omaha has reliably voted Democrat. The other four electoral districts vote solidly Republican. Ordinarily, this little hiccup in the system wouldn't matter much. But 2024 represents a uniquely precarious moment."
In 2008, Democrat Barack Obama won that one electoral vote in the district around Omaha.
But now, Republican Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen wants to end that split electoral vote.
Pillen recently declared, "I strongly support statewide unity and joining 48 other states by awarding all five of our Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who wins the majority of Nebraskans' votes. As I have also made clear, I am willing to convene the (Nebraska State) Legislature for a special session to fix this 30-year-old problem before the 2024 election. However, I must receive clear and public indication that 33 senators are willing to vote in such a session to restore winner-take-all."
"The Electoral College was the product of an 18th-Century agrarian society whose capitol sat a hundred miles from virgin forest," Marche argues. "At this point in history, it is little more than a legitimacy crisis in progress. The founders built their system to avoid exactly the kind of situation that the erasure of the district Omaha, Nebraska, would represent: the possibility of democracy in bad faith and by name only."

Are you endorsing a mass murder from your tweet?? Like, I don't like trump et al either but like that's super fucked up
If you want to call taking out some of the worst people on the earth a "mass murder" then yeah I am
Each of the people in that shitty AI art are heinous, evil individuals. (Libs, don't come crying to me about abe lincoln ffs)
In the hypothetical scenario where all those folks are gathered around one table with their collective guard down? Yeah I'll take that opportunity
This shouldn't be news to y'all, I've said before that if I found myself standing next to Jim Pillen (gov of NE) or Ron DeSantis (two examples) it would take every ounce of self-control not to commit acts of unspeakable violence. In no way do they escape a hypothetical random meeting without a bare minimum of me screaming at them. And that's best case scenario for them.
But yeah, do violence to those that are trying to legislate trans people out of existence. A lot of it.

Nebraska's Electoral Dilemma
The effort to shift Nebraska's electoral vote system to a winner-takes-all model has hit a wall, with Governor Jim Pillen and GOP officials unable to secure the necessary votes. This change, seen as beneficial for former President Trump, remains contentious. Should Nebraska stick with its unique proportional system, or would a winner-takes-all approach better reflect the voter’s will? Is electoral system reform ever truly neutral, or does it inherently serve political ends? What are your thoughts on the potential impacts of such a change? Let's discuss!

Trump and Nebraska governor push to deny Biden a crucial electoral vote | Semafor
Donald Trump and Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen endorsed legislation that would take Omaha’s potentially decisive electoral vote out of play for Democrats, hours after conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s Tuesday X post suggesting it.
In just 200 words, Kirk urged Republicans to repeal the state’s 1991 law that assigned two electors to the winner of the state, and one for each of its three congressional districts. Republicans easily carried Nebraska in every subsequent election, but in 2008 and 2020, the Omaha-based 2nd District voted Democratic.
“Nebraskans should call their legislators and their governor to demand their state stop pointlessly giving strength to their political enemies,” wrote Kirk.
Five hours and 10 minutes later, Pillen put out a statement supporting a bill that would convert the state to a winner-take all system in November.
