Lesson 8C – Fundamental Guard Sweeps (1 of 3): Elevator Sweep Today’s Class Times – 12:15pm & 7pm (By Reservation) If you can maintain the mount, you should. If you can’t maintain the mount, use the guard to control your opponent. The guard is the safest position for punch protection and submission attacks. There are also opportunities to quickly stand up to escape. From within the guard, larger opponents tend to believe that if they drive their weight forward, they can submit you with their body weight. This is not true. Because they are inside your legs, their weight is distributed in so many different places that it is very easy to survive the pressure. In fact, any time a larger opponent is driving all their weight forward from within your guard, there is a good chance that they are actually creating an opportunity for the Elevator Sweep. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to sweep your opponent from the bottom position to regain the top position. First, we’ll teach you the Standard Variation of the Elevator Sweep. From the guard, you can neutralize punches and submit your opponent with one of several techniques. In this lesson, we will discuss the Triangle Choke. The Triangle Choke is one of the most amazing techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. It gives an individual the ability to render an opponent unconscious from the bottom of the fight. Lesson 6C – Fundamental Mount Finishes (3 of 3): Straight Armlock Today’s Class Times – 12:15pm & 7pm (By Reservation) If a fight goes to the ground, the goal becomes to achieve the top mount position. From there, we can exhaust & eventually submit our opponent with ease. It is very common for your opponent to reach up for your chest or throat during their escape attempt. When they do, they create the perfect opportunity for the Straight Armlock. The Straight Armlock is a great submission option since it can be applied from so many positions. Since it employs so much leverage, it can be used to incapacitate even the largest opponent. This lesson will provide you with the skills necessary to apply it from the mount position while controlling your opponent’s movement. Lesson 5C – Fundamental Guard Controls (1 of 3): Punch Block Series (Stages 1-4) - Guard Today’s Class Times – 12:15pm & 7pm (By Reservation) If a fight goes to the ground, the ideal position is the mount. If you are unable to keep the mount, you can use your legs to wrap the opponent in a position called the guard. The Guard is the “secret weapon” of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. From the guard, you can apply joint locks and choke holds to subdue even the largest opponent. These submissions can only be executed, however, if you survive long enough to attempt them. With an outraged opponent in your guard, it is almost certain that you will have punches being thrown at your face from every possible angle. Punching your opponent from the mount can be effective but may cause you to exhaust yourself, lose your balance, and in some cases do more damage than you intended. Lesson 1C - Fundamental Mount Escapes (1 of 3): Basic Trap & Roll Escapes Today's Class Times - 12:15pm & 7pm In a real fight, the goal is to achieve the top position once the fight goes to the ground. The problem is that things don't always go according to plan. Against a larger attacker, you are likely to end up on the bottom of the mount position which is one of the worst places to be in a fight.
