          Grinning from ear to ear, he follows Sakai’s retreat and ducks into the instructor’s humble apartment. It is just like any bachelor’s abode; not the tidiest, but there is organized chaos and structure amongst the clutter, and Shinji threads his way gracefully towards the small chabudai in the middle of the room. 

          He takes the two cups from his old comrade and sits down on the tatami by the low table, and while the man is bustling around the kitchenette to host his unexpected guest, Shinji patiently gazes upon the familiar back and feels gladness simply at being able to look upon this sight again after all these lost decades. It’s a back that he used to see on missions, the most reliable vanguard. Now, that same sturdy back is slightly more stooped compared to what he remembers, as if weighed down by the passage of time and tragedies, but it is still here. 

          A growing soreness tingles in his nose. He is tremendously glad, that Sakai is alive and well. 

               “ Pardon the intrusion, sensei. ” His tone is very gentle, very fond. “ Took me a bit longer than anticipated to return and visit ya. ”

is totally baffled by the news. is she hot? is she cool to hang out with? has no clue that he already met her. might as well get a heart attack once he'll find out.

               “ Girlfriend? Try wife. ” The tone of his ready admission sounds more like ‘surprised? me too, never thought I’d get married either-’ No better time than to reveal the biggest shocker now. 

               “ Well, we’re havin’ some problems now, but she’s someone ya know. S’Hiyori. ”

          After the third circuit outside the Gobantai, Shinji is finally alerted to the problem by a bemused subordinate. Emerging from his office and crossing the large main yard to the front gates, he is just in time to see Sakai wander past for what might possibly be the fourth or fifth time. Chuckling, he steps out onto the pristine streets, cups his hands around his mouth at the disappearing figure ahead and hollers-

               “ Oi!! That Fifth Division Officer over there!! How long are ya plannin’a skive off? The entire division is waitin’ for ya ‘ta kick off mornin’ drills!! ”

been stuck in a cadaver workshop since early morning bc our cadavers are still kinda frozen even after an hour of thawing on the table, so now the lab techs are flushing the midline with heated NS until a mini laparotomy can be safely performed for umbilicus trocar insertion and then we can get finally the party started- anyway how are u guys doin’

p.s.: btw we owe replies to @jizokusei (and many others aaaaa) and we have NOT forgotten!! will try to get some stuff out later!!
