Memorial to John Purroy Mitchel, one of the youngest mayors of New York when elected in 1914 at 34 years old. He was unable to secure reelection in the 1918 campaign and joined the Air Service. He was sent for training in Louisiana where, on the morning of July 6, 1918, he fell from his plane 500 feet into the marshland below.
