1// The National - Carin at the Liquor Store Their songs often remind me of realist paintings coming to life telling the story of everyday American life in all its forlorn despair. In the end, everything is falling apart and it’s haunting, sad and soothing at the same time. This song is one of the best examples.

2// Longwave - Wake Me When It’s Over I discovered them via the Meet Me In The Bathroom book. The song feels like a charming, melodic trip back in time all the way down to the early aughts and will presumably appeal to you if you’re an Interpol fan as you’ll be stepping into familiar territory.

3// Interpol - Tidal Wave This one did indeed hit me like a tidal wave from the very beginning thanks to its seductive atmosphere. Sam’s drums along with the hazy guitar lines and Paul’s vocals dwelling on a certain kind of longing still gets me every time. A forceful immediate fave from El Pintor.

4// The Libertines - What Became of the Likely Lads Their abilities as lyricists are at their strongest when capturing the fragility and impossibility of human relationships as well as immovable feelings of mutual alienation and regret - similar to The National, topic-wise, yet with a very different but equally enticing approach.

5// Josef K - Sense of Guilt If your band is named after a Kafka character, you’re most likely to succeed in getting into my good books. Classic, raw post punk beauty hailing all the way from Scotland. They probably had to deal with lots and lots of Joy Division comparisons back in the day. Forget the first sentence though, a few exceptions just came to mind. Anyway, Josef K are great.

6// Protomartyr - Pontiac 87 I’ll continue with some more contemporary post punk sounds. If you’re looking for a song that will take you out of the ever-repeating maze of Monday mundanity without becoming too uplifting, this one should cover your needs.

7// The Horrors - World Below Why is it that their new album is a collection of their finest moments to date and at the same time seems to be the one that gets the least recognition? Picking a track is hard but the one with the sleek electronics and the catchy rhythm sounds like a good choice to start with.

8// Wolf Alice - Formidable Cool That one’s as formidable as it’s cool. While it starts relatively harmless, it doesn’t take long until it intensifies and turns into something fierce and more impulsive. The build-up didn’t disappoint in the live rendition either. Definitely one of this year’s songs that will stick.

9// Duett - Julienne This is a bit of an unusual addition to the mix. Whenever I listen to music at work, a Russian retrowave web radio station and some 80s synthwave youtube playlist are my go-to choices. During the last few weeks, the two albums by Duett have become my genre favourites. I don’t know anything about the person or people behind the name but the synth vibes had me at first listen and made me feel nostalgic for a time I never experienced.

10// Sleaford Mods - Jobseeker The last spot goes to angry, vulgar, cynical British working class nihilism. The minimalist sound and the slang-heavy raging lyrics would make the best modern soundtrack to a Ken Loach film. I just love them (& Ken Loach).
