Infinite Beauty: Winchester art exhibition takes place at The Arc from today | Hampshire Chronicle
The work that is on display has been publicly exhibited for the first time and drawn entirely from private collectors in Hampshire.
Infinite Beauty investigates the enduring appeal of nature as a subject for leading contemporary artists, exploring the way in which they interact with natural forms - plants, animals, habitats and the wider landscape - and how their work comments on the ways human activity impacts the environment around us.
The exhibition will feature an eclectic mixture of media, style and approaches, with photography, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture helping us to look at our relationship with nature afresh.
Works by leading artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Chris Drury, Elisabeth Frink, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Maggi Hambling, Richard Long, Juliette Losq, Darren Almond and Dan Holdsworth will take visitors from familiar everyday experiences to the ends of the earth among the ice and snow of Antarctica.
Curator Steve Marshall says: “We have been fortunate to draw together this unique exhibition through the generosity of a group of Hampshire-based collectors. Infinite Beauty showcases many remarkable works rarely seen in public. Through the imaginations of these artists we can look afresh at the amazing variety and beauty that nature provides, while marvelling at human creativity. Hopefully visitors will take away a message of hope from this inspirational combination.”
For more information, visit arcwinchester.org.uk/event/infinite-beauty.
A lively and varied events programme has been planned to coincide with the exhibition. Events taking place at The Arc for the duration of the exhibition include, Rebecca Fletcher and Charley Corbett In Conversation: 12 Birds To Save Your Life, Watercolour for Wellbeing with Iris Hill, Georgia de Buriatte Botanical Beauty Art Course and Infinite Beauty Curator's Tours with Steve Marshall.
Visitors to The Arc will also be able to visit a complementary exhibition and new installation HEARTH, by artist Suna Imre at City Space and in The Arc atrium (until November 13).

‘Juliette Losq’s work seeks to describe the borderlands on the fringes of urban developments, capturing the benign battles waged between man and nature. Losq’s renditions of the (sub)urban landscape are interrupted by the threat of an unknown presence. The dark recesses allow the imagination of the viewer to place where that potential threat might be lurking.  Losq experiments with complexity and scale.  Through her use of watercolour she aims to challenge the historical associations of this medium with preparatory sketching in the field, and domestic scale or use. ‘   These places cannot persist in the same way as a Ruskinian ruin. But, you can see value in them. They are places where you can escape progress and go off grid. In that way, for me, they are refuges – not only spatially, but also in terms of your imagination. They can be quite scary if you are exploring them on your own, but this is mainly because of the things that our imaginations associate with them. Almost every time you visit these sites, they are completely empty. They are marginal zones in all senses of the word. For me, they are both, places that I want to preserve in my imagination and also places that are always changeable. They are never the same again and you don’t know what to expect when you go back there. https://theheonggallery.wordpress.com/2020/05/13/juliette-losq-a-benign-vision-of-an-apocalyptic-future/ Juliette Losq studied fine art painting at Wimbledon in 2007 having already completed degrees in art history and English literature. She achieved this by saving up money working as an insurance agent. Her work is centered on the battle between the urban and the natural in liminal spaces on the edgelands of cities, and mainly works in ink and watercolour on paper. She also uses these large scale drawings as installation pieces, constructing 3d world from 2d objects, inspired by Victorian and early 20th century set design and toy theatres. I love everything about Losqs work, from the themes and aesthetic to her use and defence of watercolour and paper as valid mediums for works of fine art. I particularly enjoyed reading this article she gave in 2015 where she speaks about the contrast of her positive experience at WCA  with that of the RCA where her figurative watercolours were unpopular and considered untrendy. She mentions noticing that half the allocated studio spaces were empty, but being addicting to working in her space daily, a feeling i can well relate to. Despite criticisms, she pushed on with the work she was passionate about and was lucky enough to be recognised by various painting and drawing awards and now works as an artist in her studio full time. I find it interesting that she had to sacrifice a period of time working in insurance in order to realise her dream of studying fine art as this is something you don’t hear of too often when researching successful artists.

I am so obsessed with this painting at the moment. Photorealism in traditional media never fails to blow my mind.
