thinking about reanimation narratives and how ‘the work’ inevitably creates family units again and again…. pinned together by the father-mother-god figure of the scientist himself and the madness of his promethean womb, with the assistant(s) functioning as complex bride-parent-disciple figures, and their monster(s) representing the lab-womb’s strange and unprecedented children, delivered far more bloodily than any infant in history. the assistant(s) may be there out of willingness as in the revenge of frankenstein (1958), frankenstein and the monster from hell (1974), or reanimator (1985), or kept there via violence as in frankenstein must be destroyed (1969); the monster(s) may figure as anything from a carnal love-letter and a spectre of grief resurrected as in bride of reanimator (1990) to a pair of lovers reunited in one body as in frankenstein created woman (1967); the science may involve anything from water-baths as in the curse of frankenstein (1957), to partial reliance on actual human reproduction as in flesh for frankenstein (1973), to metaphysics involving the soul as in beyond reanimator (2003); regardless, ‘the work’ is, at its heart, gestation and birth— and twisted family units inevitably forge themselves around that core
