we're finally really in the first battle arc, tho the animation continues to be nothing impressive as expected. hoping that at least the big fight with the boss looks good but we'll see. I also forgot that razor showed up here too so that was nice, hope that his fight gets some love too cause he deserves it. tho I did like how the text at the bottom there sunk in sync with mash that was a cute touch, it was also all wobbly while he was talking underwater

Went to the bookstore today as part of my vacation. Some highlights: 

Manhwa for sale! Full color, very nice. I didn’t read either of these before, so I’m not sure how much they changed up the layout for the print versions. 

Abandoned Empress: I think I dropped this one because the ML was a total douchebag. After finishing the first volume... I still think that, but they’re also doing some kind of “it’s because of fate” thing, which... that doesn’t really help. I already prefer the green haired kid. 

Solo Leveling: Most of vol 1 is just setting up how he got his special powers, so it’s pretty whatever. However, there are two points I’m not fond of. One, they’re adding another system on top of the dungeon stuff. It feels kinda overcrowded and pointlessly convoluted to me because I would have preferred to just stick with the dungeon stuff. I suspect it’s going to lead to the usual overblown powerlevelling I don’t enjoy. Two, they emphasize how the MC isn’t just comparatively weak, he’s the weakest ever, he just sucks so much, you can’t get worse than him, etc. I know this is popular, but I feel like it’s also going too far. He just be average, you know? 

Also saw these two favorites! I can’t buy them now, but I will remember this! 

I read through Eminence again just because, it’s still fun. One slightly funny point is that the official translation is keeping the MC’s goal as “eminence in shadow” but the first chapter has him referring to it also as “shadow-broke.” It looks like they couldn’t agree on the glossary at first and then didn’t update the early parts, lol. 

Also decided to try these three shounen. 

Kaiju no.8: Indeed good! Interesting setting, very charming characters. I prefer this one out of the bunch, though mostly because the MC is 30+ and all the characters are older in general (they’re literally getting a job here) vs Jujutsu’s “the main cast are in high school together” kind of deal. 

Jujutsu Kaisen: Very shounen feel, indeed similar to early Bleach. This isn’t a bad thing, Bleach was so popular for a reason. I like that they don’t try to act like Itadori is normal, the way a lot of series are like “our MC is the most average potato possible.” No, he’s weird from the start. There’s definitely something wrong with his head, for better or for worse. 

Dr. Stone: This one is a very different style. It’s way more overblown and also far less interested in characterization. It’s still a fun read though. 

I feel like I should be recommending this to someone, but I can’t figure out who. I didn’t get to finish it, but it’s about a linguist researcher meeting and studying various monster races and their cultures. Like werewolves communicating partially through scent, or lizardmen writing system including color and shape. 

And finally... I don’t know why, but I saw a number of what looks like TokyoPop books.

New Battlefield Idea: Metru Nui Ruins

Metru Nui Ruins (Bionicle Series, Film Appearances: Bionicle 2 Legends of Metru Nui and Bionicle 3: Web of Shadows)

A city in a mechanical subterranean world that has sustained great damaged with the fall of their Great Spirit, and lies unrepaired as its former citizens slumber in captivity, and an army biomechanical spiders known as Visorak web-together fortresses amongst the ruins and hunt everything that moves.

The jungle-like mass of cables and chutes that was Transportation Hub and vehicular-research district of Le-Metru no longer hums. The currents of rivers molten metal, rock and boiling water-like substances have mostly slowed to a crawl in the industrial district of Ta-Metru. The stone carvings of the flat Assembly District of Po-metru no longer echo with the sounds of labor. The once quiet cold and mountainous Ko-Metru echoes with the sounds of flying beasts no longer held in check by the peacekeepers. 

With its fall, the Tokyo-Sized citystate has every possible biome imaginable, making it attractive to all sorts of invasive species, the fighters included.

Like the LEGO brand it comes from, each time a battle happens here it is an interconnection of parts with the possibility of a new experience each time, with a diverse variety of terrain due to both the city's original layout and varying degrees of damage.

One constant however, is the network of tunnels under the city thanks to its vast underground museum  and maintenance pathways give all BURROWING kaiju quite the advantage.

After this battlefield is drawn and before debate begins:

Roll a D6 to determine COVER ( 1 None, 2 Minimimal, 3 Light, 4 Moderate, 5 Heavy, 6 Extreme)

Roll  a d7 to determine temperature: (1-5 No Extremest, 6 Extreme Heat, 7 Extreme Cold)

Extreme Heat: The battle is happeny in the old manufacturing district. Any MAMMAL or combatant with a WEAKNESS to Flame or Extreme Heat have a -5 penalty to their Offensive and Defensive Power Numbers ..

Extreme Cold: The fight is happening in Ko-Metru or along its borders. Any REPTILE, PLANT,  INSECT KAIJU will suffer a PENALTY of -5 to Offensive and Defensive Power Numbers ..

Roll a D6 to determine if there is access to DEEP WATER in the form of Oceans/Waterways (1-3: present, 4-6 Not present ), If present, applicable kaiju may take AQUATIC EXTREME cover bonus and any other water-related rules and weaknesses are to be considered.

If both kaiju are aquatic or one is amphibious and there is DEEP WATERa

Then Roll a d10 to determine how much cover Underwater Cover is offered by debris (1-2 None, 3-8 Minimimal, 9-10 Light,)

Special Rules

-Tunnels:- all BURROWING kaiju the ability to treat the Battlefield as TWO CATEGORIES higher unless they are facing another burrowing kaiju, in which they only get their normal Burrowing bonus. 

-The Poisonous Scourge

Before THE BATTLE BEGINS, there is a chance the occupying Visorak forces will be successfully organized in time by their commanders to try and subdue the competitors the same way they have with many beasts in the past.

Any combatant incapable of attempting communication with Visorak:i.e. not telepathic, human controlled, alien-controlled, a superhero, or not a Mothra with priestesses.(If a team of kaiju has one member that qualifies for this, they won't be attacked) is subject to possible attack.*

[For King Ghidorah (Showa), his Alien-Controlled status is determined by whether or not his special rule is activated.

Visorak count as local authorities for King Kong (KKE) special rule]

Kaiju fighting with a teammate who is not a possible target will not be targeted.

If one or both fighters qualify for being attacked by the Visorak, roll a d6. If 1-2 is rolled, the Visorak manage to assemble in time and make a single attack with a power number of 50 on each contestant/members that cannot open a dialogue before fleeing to tell their masters of sheer opposition they are facing. Defense rolls are allowed against, but at half the kaiju's DPN due to the Visorak's skill at hunting beasts of all kinds.

[If they are targeting a Team, they make an attack with a PN of 25 on each individual of that team].

*Not that the evil  Visorak care, but if they have an excuse to delay combat against such a monstrous foe by telling their superiors how more complex the situation is than it first appeared, they will.

Mudbox and Kaiju

What is Mudbox:

Mudbox is a software based around digital 3D sculpting and painting developed by Autodesk, it is one of the largest and most common sculpting tools in the industry along with its competitor Zbrush.

Starting in Mudbox:

Upon opening mudbox, you’re given a variety of options, the tabs on the left are short videos that instruct you on how to use the software, in the middle are some preset models which can be used as a starting point and on the right are recent files which you’ve worked on.

Once in the software itself, the UI layout differs from its Modelling counterpart a little, but thankfully the tools are rather easy to find and the scene navigation works the same way.

In the top right is where all of your outline is kept, this displays the objects within the scene and object's sculpt and paint layers.

Much like photoshop or gimp, you can create layers for sculpting objects, this is a good nondestructive method of sculpting that allows you to modify an object without completely ruining what you've done beforehand. For example, on my own kaiju, I had a layer for the head's base shape, a layer where I refined that shape, a layer of the eye sockets, for skin detail and so on.

You are also able to increase the subdivision level of your layers, and you'll need to due to the base objects having rather low polygons. It's best to leave the base object at its default polygon count and just subdivide the layers.

While sculpting you are generating a displacement map, which is a texture that manipulates the position of object's polygons. This essentially means you arent actually changing the shape of the object, because as soon as you take off that displacement map, the object turns back its default state. This technique allows you to create different LODs and actually gives you the power to show a 8 million polygon object on a mesh that only possesses 500 polygons which helps drastically with performance.

Kaiju Research:

Kaiju, from Japanese “strange beasts” are giant monsters in Japanese culture that are often depicted attacking major cities, engaging the military or battling other kaiju. Possibly the most famous kaiju is Godzilla and is the first kaiju film. Godzilla is a great example of the somewhat metaphorical nature of Kaiju, for example Godzilla serves as a metaphor for nuclear weapons and the fear’s of post-war Japan after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the Lucky Dragon 5 incident. Other prominent examples of Kaiju include Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah and Gamera.

The Japanese word kaiju originally referred to monsters and creatures from ancient Japanese legends, the term earlier appeared in the Chinese “Classic of Mountains and Seas.” Once Japan was opened to foreign relations after the end of sakoku, the word kaiju came to be used to express concepts from paleontology and legendary creatures around the world. For example, in 1908 it was suggested that the extinct Ceratosaurus was alive in Alaska, and this was referred to as a kaiju. Despite this there are no traditional depictions  of kaiju or kaiju-like creatures in Japanese folklore; but rather the origins of kaiju are found in film.

Due to Kaiju character’s being considered giant science fiction and fantasy creatures, their appearance is usually very alien and unlike anything found on earth. Many kaiju share a few physical traits, such as leathery furless skin, multiple eyes and many arms and legs. Their behaviour can also be depicted as antagonistic, protagonistic, or even as neutral force of nature.

There are a few other terms related to kaiju, such as diakaiju which literally translates to “large kaiju” or “great kaiju” and refers to the larger monsters, though the exact distinction is debated. Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra are referred to as the san daikiju, the three great kaiju.

Another term within the kaiju sphere is kaijin, literally translating to “monster man” or “mystery man” and is the term used for humanoid kaiju.

Sculpting Kaiju:

A sphere is usually the best shape to start with when you're sculpting an organic shape since it helps in avoiding a boxy shape, but a sphere too round for a kaiju head, so i used the scale tool to turn it into an oval shape then rotated it slightly so it wasn’t perfectly straight along the X axis.

Using the sculpting brush I blocked out the general shape of the head, mostly the ridges above the eyes and along the cheeks, I also used the version of the sculpting tool that takes away (Hold Ctrl while using the sculpting tool) to give a more dramatic depression where the eyes would sit. During this process I used the mirror option to keep the head symmetrical.

I decided to use the scrape tool to refine the head’s shape, especially around the ridges. I added a sphere to the scene which would represent the creature’s eyes, I then used the sculpt tool to model the eye socket and eyelids around the sphere.

In Mudbox, there is a texture/stamp option which uses a heightmap to dictate the shape of the brushes. There are variety of different stamps that come with Mudbox, I used a few of the scale stamps to make the creature’s skin less smooth and hopefully more life like and organic.

I decided to add horns to the creature, I did this by adding another sphere to the sphere which I sculpted to a point then copied it and added to the creature. I found that I liked how the lower horns look, but didn’t particularly like the two higher ones appeared, so I removed them.

Finally I added the last small details such as the mouth and a few scars, for this I used the knife tool which makes small cuts into the mesh.

I’m still debating whether or not I want the creature to have a mouth, since it has a rather mystical quality when it doesn’t have one.

Overall, I'm very happy with the outcome I got, though it's a shame that I didnt model the jaw as a separate object that could be animated; I may have to try and remove the jaw and make it possible to be animated.
