The Birthplace of a Cultural Revolution: Exploring the Origins of Hip-Hop and its Influence on Fashion
Tumblr media
Welcome to our blog, where we embark on a journey to uncover the origins of hip-hop and its profound impact on both music and fashion. In this post, we delve into the birthplace of this cultural revolution, tracing its roots back to the vibrant streets of the South Bronx. We'll also explore the close connection between hip-hop fashion and street style, highlighting how the fashion choices of early hip-hop pioneers became intertwined with the very essence of the genre. So, let's rewind to the past and uncover the rich history that birthed hip-hop and shaped its unique sense of style.
The Birth of Hip-Hop:
Hip-hop emerged during the 1970s in the South Bronx, New York City, as a creative and expressive response to socio-economic challenges faced by African American and Latino communities. Its inception can be attributed to the fusion of various elements, including DJing, MCing (rapping), graffiti art, and, of course, dance. The neighborhoods became a breeding ground for innovation, and the streets served as the backdrop for this cultural movement.
Street Style and Self-Expression:
Hip-hop culture has always been rooted in individuality and self-expression. Early pioneers expressed their identity and creativity through their clothing, which laid the foundation for the iconic hip-hop fashion and street style we know today. In the face of limited resources, they repurposed and personalized clothing, creating their own unique looks that set them apart from mainstream fashion.
Influence of African and African American Aesthetics:
Hip-hop fashion draws inspiration from African and African American aesthetics, paying homage to cultural heritage and ancestral roots. Bold and vibrant colors, patterns, and prints reminiscent of traditional African garments found their way into the fashion choices of early hip-hop artists. This infusion of cultural elements became a defining feature of hip-hop fashion.
Rise of Sneaker Culture:
Sneakers have become synonymous with hip-hop fashion and street style. From Adidas to Nike, Puma to Converse, sneakers became a symbol of identity and status within the hip-hop community. The love for sneakers grew hand in hand with the rise of breakdancing and the need for functional footwear that could withstand the demands of dance battles and energetic moves.
Branding and Logomania:
Hip-hop fashion has a close relationship with branding and logos. As the genre gained popularity, artists started sporting clothing adorned with recognizable logos, transforming fashion into a form of self-promotion. Brands like FUBU, Karl Kani, and Sean John became synonymous with the hip-hop fashion movement, representing not just style but also entrepreneurial success within the community.
Influence on Mainstream Fashion:
Hip-hop's influence on fashion extends far beyond its grassroots beginnings. As the genre gained mainstream recognition, elements of hip-hop style started to influence high fashion runways, streetwear brands, and pop culture. Baggy pants, oversized hoodies, bucket hats, and gold chains all found their way into the fashion lexicon, transcending cultural boundaries and becoming iconic symbols of hip-hop style.
Conclusion:
Hip-hop's origin lies in the vibrant streets of the South Bronx, where a fusion of artistic expression gave birth to a cultural revolution. The fashion choices of early hip-hop pioneers became intertwined with the essence of the genre, fostering a unique street style that celebrated self-expression, cultural heritage, and individuality. Hip-hop fashion's influence on mainstream culture is a testament to its enduring power. From sneakers to branding, streetwear to logomania, hip-hop has left an indelible mark on the fashion world. So, whether you're donning a fresh pair of sneakers, rocking a statement logo, or embracing the vibrant colors and patterns of hip-hop fashion, remember that you're not just wearing clothes—you're paying homage to a cultural movement that continues to shape and redefine fashion as we know it. Let your fashion choices become a testament to the spirit of hip-hop, where individuality, creativity, and self-expression thrive.

Invader Entry #001 - Crab
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phylum - Tetragonata (Pixelated) Class - Isotregonata (Even-pixeled) Order - Leitetrogonata (Fused-pixeled, not composite) Suborder - Panplatomorpha Family - Platoepidromephidae (Classic Invaders) Morph - Carcinomorph (Crab) Invader ID - [Coming soon!]
Official Names: Crab, Medium Invader, or Kani Appears in: Space Invaders, SI Part II, Lunar Rescue, Return of the Invaders (Cameo), SI Revolution, SI Extreme, SI Infinity Gene, SI Extreme 2, Arkanoid v Space Invaders, and many more The Crab invader needs no introduction... except it kind of does. It is easily one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters in existence, yet very few people even know that it has a name. Because, yes, this 11 by 8 sprite is indeed modeled after a crab-like alien. In fact, all of the original invaders were modeled after sea life! Here's some of Tomohiro Nishikado's concept art alongside the final sprite.
Tumblr media
While the Crab may have originally been an organic creature, the vast majority of modern adaptations interpret it as pixelated. Earlier games in the franchise's history do depict it as organic or mechanical, but for the sake of this catalog these are considered different invaders and will receive their own entries.
Among pixelated depictions of the invader, there are two primary interpretations: a flat version and a three-dimensional, voxelized version. The flat version is used in most games because, well, there haven't been many Space Invaders games with 3d gameplay. The first (released and still operational) game to feature 3d gameplay and use the classic invader designs is Space Invaders World Defense. However, this design was first introduced in a 2018 video for the franchise's 40th anniversary. https://youtu.be/lu_DDfmUFK4?si=0gzYCpXoyb3MFtp_&t=118
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since then, it has been used for advertising and merchandise, such as the Funko Pop figures. The flat design is still sometimes used, and ultimately for the sake of this catalog the flat and 3d designs will be considered the same invader.
Gameplay
As with the other classic invaders, the Crab's attributes vary from game to game. In many games, it merely moves back and forth and spits out a variety of projectiles, some destructible and some not, just like the rest of its classic kin. Generally, it yields 20 points upon death. Many of its changes in behavior across games are found in variants that apply to all classic invaders, such as Infinity Gene's shielded invaders and Extreme's deflector invaders. Thus these variations will receive their own entires.
However, the Crab receives a notable unique trait in Space Invaders Part II. Crabs found at wave 4 and beyond split into two "cuttlefish" invaders when shot. Whether or not this should be considered a separate variant of the Crab is debatable, though the splitting invaders in Revolution will receive their own entries in the future.

This would be higher but I don’t like Arcángel right now so he bumps this down for me Bad Bunny i know you’re working on an album right now it’s all over your Astro chart I can feel trap bunny coming back this is just a small taste and I’m fucking excited
3. Volver by Rauw Alejandro and Skrillex ft Four Tet
Rauw sounds amazing and I fucking loved him on this track and the way the music flows becomes so hypnotic and trippy and like I’m so obsessed

Hey did anyone else here watch Sushi Pack as a child or am I alone on that one again?
Guys most of the episodes that were once online have been taken down now there's only like 3 left and for some reason amazon claims it has season one but it's unavailable
Look I'm not saying Sushi Pack deserves a season 3 but if FUNKY FUCKING PHANTOM can be found online this show deserves to be found online too
I'M SO GLAD I FOUND A THIRD PERSON OUTSIDE OF MY FAMILY WHO WATCHED SUSHI PACK
LISTEN SUSHI PACK WAS THE FIRST SHOW I WATCHED AS IT CAME OUT, THE FIRST SHOW I DREW FANART FOR, AND THE FIRST SHOW I CARED ABOUT ENDING
As a child I would've said my favorite character order would be: Maguro, Wasabi, Kani, Tako, Ikura Now it would be: Ikura, Tako, Kani, Wasabi, Maguro
My my how times change (let's be honest though I love them all to death they're all good lil sushi) ALSO it never sunk in as a child but the Sushi Pack are all canonically zombies. They had families and such but were caught, turned into sushi, and then brought to life. There are a number of episodes where they visit their normal lookin fish families. So y'know.
I wanna relive these episodes and scream at how bad the writing is while simultaneously screaming at how much I love the characters If I drew a sushi pack icon nobody could stop me YOU KNOW WHO'S ACTUALLY SHORT? THE SUSHI PACK
We're truly living in the year 2018 and I'm drawing Sushi Pack fanart I fear no god
I'd tell you all to watch sushi pack but there's no point because the episodes aren't online and also you wouldn't enjoy it as much as I do because I have the nostalgia factor going for me
Surprisingly Ikura [propic i just drew] doesn’t look like absolute crap looking at him without being half asleep
I should draw the rest of the sushi pack
