Karün is a B Corp based in Patagonia that combines nature conservation with the empowerment of rural communities through product innovation. The brand creates high-quality eyewear in a very different way; by using recovered, natural and/or noble materials and working alongside local communities in Patagonia to empower them to protect their wild territories. Various types of discarded materials, such as fishing nets, ropes, and metals, are collected by rural entrepreneurs, then recycled and transformed into durable sunglasses, ensuring the highest standards in quality and performance. More companies than ever are committing to getting carbon-neutral or even negative. Achieving the challenging climate targets in the Paris agreement requires more than just cutting emissions.

For the launch of Karün in Europe, we designed and organized a unique panel discussion with the support of B Lab in the enchanting setup of Egmont Park in the heart of Brussels.

Together with Katie Hill, Chair of the Management Board B Lab Europe, Emna Everard, Co-founder & CEO Kazidomi, Thomas Kimber, CEO Karün, and Madam Khattabi Zakia, Federal Minister of Climate, Environment and Sustainable Development, we addressed this essential question: Do we need new ways to talk green?

To broaden my knowledge on brands that are already using ghost fishing nets as a sustainable fashion material, Circular ocean was a great source and showed me what identities and products are already out there for a consumers interpretation. It also confirmed to me that socks and sandals made out of ghost fishing nets work! Because of this I now know my product range will include, sandals, socks and anklets all made from ghost fishing nets and and ocean pollution.

As increasing levels of marine litter is particularly pertinent to the NPA region, the Circular Ocean project will act as a catalyst to motivate and empower remote communities to develop sustainable and green business opportunities that will enhance income generation and retention within local regions. Through transnational collaboration and eco-innovation, Circular Ocean will develop share and test new sustainable solutions to incentivise the collection and reprocessing of discarded fishing nets and assist the movement towards a more circular economy

When sustainable eyewear brand Karün from Chilean Patagonia were looking for the best market in Europe to launch their new product; sunglasses made out of recycled fishing nets, they chose Stockholm. Why? You may ask. Stockholm has far from the amount of sunshine that many other European cities can boast with. The answer, however, is not to be found in the weather, but rather in the Swedish values. Colja van Haaren, Karün Europe explains: - Sustainability and living more in harmony with yourself and with the planet is something that is embedded in the roots of society here. We needed to go to a market where people actually understand our philosophy and we see Sweden as being one step ahead of the rest.
